You must set the ad_network_ads.txt file to be writable (check file name as well).

Yes tough love works.

From experience- I got tough loved to the streets at 18. Took a couple years of f'ing around and a couple of cold, cold nights without a place to sleep to figure it out but eventually, I grabbed the reigns and took responsibility for my life.

Tough love works on bratty lazy 18 year olds. It is not what Fez needs here.
