View Full Version : Good Bands you can't get into

Are there any bands out there that you know are good, but you really just can't get into?
I know there are a couple bands that I just can't seem to enjoy but that I know are good bands. If someone puts on Radiohead, I can listen to it, but I'm not a fan and for whatever reason just can't really get into them Another one is Tool. Again, I know they're a good band and can listen to them if someone else puts them on, but I really can't get into them and would never put them on myself.

out of curiousity, since good and bad are opinions, wouldnt a band that you listen to be considered "good" and a band you dont listen to be considered "bad"? i mean, would you listen to a shitty band because they were good?

....
Most of what The Beatles did after Revolver....
That's interesting to me.
When I was a kid, I loved the "pure pop" aspects of the early Beatles because they were really close to what I'd been hearing in blips from regular radio. (My dad's car didn't have an FM tuner until 1986, I think. And I honestly don't remember listening to music on the radio before I was 12, except for the time I caught "Eat It" when I was around 6 or 7 and I was playing with the HiFi.)
Later, as I started to get really interested in poetry, I started to enjoy the post-Revolver stuff because it was just so OUT THERE lyrically ... and the addition of instruments I'd never heard (sitars, etc.) was absolutely mindblowing for me. Honestly, I think my minor obsession with later Beatles is part of the reason I never did drugs. It was too much fun to think about how different things would be tossed into a song just for the anticipated critic or fan reaction ... but I really love the piecemeal, patchwork quality of the later work, mostly because it feels to me like it's the true chronicle of what went wrong with the band and why they couldn't STAY together as The Beatles.
My dad always wondered why they couldn't have done something similar to what Genesis did.
I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE The Who.
Really? Even the "early"/Mod-era stuff?

... Simon & Garfunkel ...
They don't exactly strike me as a band you would be into, though.
I happen to enjoy a few Simon & Garfunkel songs, but I don't think that I would go out and buy a "greatest hits" album or anything. They seem to have similar roots as the folk-rock groups I enjoy ... like Peter, Paul and Mary or The Kingston Trio ... really low-key, lyric and harmony-heavy, very acoustic groups.
If that's not something that interests you or speaks to you on some level, it's not surprising that you wouldn't like it.

No. I'm the one with the soft spot for Ringo. (I blame Richard Lester and the two live-action Beatles films for this. Oh, and Shining Time Station.)
I guess he thought they'd all had it in their contracts to go off and do their own side projects, but would reconvene as Genesis every few years, release an album, and then go on tour.
Since I obviously have no idea about how things actually worked, I now look like a naif.
(Or an idiot, depending on how you interpreted it.)

You are, of course, allowed to dislike any music you care to dislike. However, given the extreme arc of JC's musical development, stating either poitive or negative feelings for his music does not really say enough. Assuming you are a jazz fan in the first place, is your opinion based on having heard Om/Ascension at some point? Or have you also given Blue Train a spin? Or, for that matter, Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue? Or perhaps you were waterboarded while to listening to Giant Steps? Or are you strictly a Kenny G man? Just curious.

Acting upset or disappointed because someone doesn't agree with you about something as personal and subjective as taste in music is myopic and arrogant. And suggesting albums that we can listen to and become enlightened like you is pointless, boring, and douche, douche, douchey.

Pearl Jam
Don't hate me ... I happen to enjoy Rush a great deal, although I am not sure why.
Maybe it's the falsetto, maybe it's the over-produced electronica, maybe it's just the fact that one of them is borderline autistic, I don't know.
I have owned one U2 album. The Joshua Tree. On cassette. I was so naive, and loved the album so much, I thought that they were a new band that the person who'd given me the tape (Dad) had "discovered." (I still love that album, despite not being able to play tapes in my boombox for 15 years.)
CONFESSION: I always confused Pearl Jam with STP.
And I HATE STP.
I used to think they [STP] were music for posers because the only person I knew who raved about them is a poser. Plus, I thought they were crappy. And there are lyrics in their song Plush ("... when the dogs begin to smell her...") make me think of Hamlet (Act 4; Sc. 3):
KING CLAUDIUS
Where is Polonius?

In heaven; send hither to see: if your messenger

There's not. I don't think they're bad...I just hear absolutely nothing on any of their albums that I find unique or demanding that I listen to more. I've had several roommates over the years that loved them and played me plenty, and I've seen them live probably half a dozen times (a couple club shows where they opened and headlined and the rest fesitval shows) an I just haven't heard anything that clicked. I would reccomend giving one of their albums a shot, either the first two or the last one, The Argument, simply because the show as you describe it sounds incrediby bizarre and random.

I'm not reccomending them with the idea of "converting" him. I'm doing it becase the bizarre show he described sounds absolutely nothing like a Fugazi show. It would be like me saying I'm not into Sleater Kinney because the only time I ever heard them was when I saw them live once and everyone was line dancing. If he's still not into them, hey, great, but I figured the point of this thread was more for bands you've heard a lot or even tried to like because you realized they were good and still nothing clicked, not, "I saw/heard them once and they sucked." This isn't about bands people think are awful...it's about bands and music and genres you realize are good but you just can't get into.

I'm slightly offended by this post only because i don't think you really know my musical tastes, which are extremely varied but whatever. It's cool.
Sorry about the snottiness; I didn't mean it the way it came out.
I know I should know better. :wallbash:
The only songs i ever leave on the radio when i hear them are "Magic Bus" and Baba O'Riley". The latter really only being for the instrumentals of the song. I honestly can't stand anything about this band.
Yeah, those aren't the best Who songs to be listening to over and over and over again. (I hate them too.)
I loved the whole Tommy album when I was 14. Thought it was astonishing. I don't know whether this would classify as "pre-Mod era" or what, but I loved the whole album. There are some songs that don't really work as stand-alone pieces, but a lot of them have elements that I've heard in more "modern" music, although I'm the first to admit I'm in a time warp when it comes to "modern" music ... I kind of start at 1989 and stop at 1993.
Anyway, I loved my Tommy cassette so much that I was beyond pissed when my copy ended up trashed in the foyer and I couldn't replace it.

I am familiar with Fugazi. I liked them thats why I went to see them. I was just so confused by the live show and since then I just moved on musically. i respect the members of the group there history, philosphy etc....there not blink 182 after all.

I agree thats why I listed them.I enjoy the dialogue, if you started off calling me a moron then of course i would be annoyed but thats not your style were having a discussion about bands like humans not monsters.

I know when I first read the post:
The worst show ever filled with tacky cheesy dancing from the band and the crowd the songs sounded dated and just bad. It was early 90's when I saw them.
I thought maybe he was confusing Fugazi with some other band but I guess not. Sounds like a strange night .....

BWAAAHHHHHHH I can't believe this. I'm starting to think that i'm insane since what i saw seems nothing like anyone elses experiences. i was driving that night and wasn't drunk, had vietnamese food before the show, did get into an argument with the girlfriend at the time but nothing that ruined the night. I just remember being disappointed with the show and my girlfriend at the time agreed with me that it seemed suprisingly cheesy.
I'm inclined to ask the ex but were on less than speaking terms so I guess that would be a waste of time.
I will never understand people's obsession with Radiohead. They're not bad, but I couldn't listen to an entire album.
Ditto for Weezer.

I think I'm just more curious than anything else...I've seen Fugazi live almost 20 times, and some of them have been "interesting" experiences, but nothing like what you're talking about, not even close. Do you remember where it was and what year? Their fanbase has pretty comprehensive live bootlegs out there, and I'd love to hear a show where the apparently rare "wacky rave Fugazi" showed up.
