View Full Version : Somethings wrong with my ankle

I was in the city yesterday to cut some voiceovers for my company, and I wasn't looking where I was going and I rolled my ankle something fierce into a small pothole.
It hurt like a BITCH for the first few minutes, but I could eventually walk on it.
I still have pain if I attempt to push off on it, and it's swollen something fierce (with brusing and discoloration) but I'm not sure if this is just a really bad sprained ankle or something worse.
I can put my full weight on it, I can balance on one leg, and the most pain comes when I bend it in the direction it rolled or I arch my foot onto the balls of my feet.
There's NO tenderness. It's swollen, but no pain, which also leads me away from ligament damage too.

You probably did some partial tearing of a ligament. That's what the bruising is.

They cannot do much for strained ligaments. I did that to mine a few years ago and have had bad ankles when I played basketball. the best thing you can do for it is to soak it a bucket full of ice water for about 20 minutes. It hurts like a bitch but if you do it 3 times a day for a few days you will see a big difference

Depends. If you're not in that much pain I'd just try to rest it. Keep it elevated and take some anti-inflamatory like Motrin to try and get the swelling down. The bruising may get worse over the next day as the blood gets to the surface. I have fucked up both my ankles dozens of times to the point where my leg was purple half way up my shin.
If you can put weight on it that's a good sign.

Yeah. that's what I thought. I heard a "pop" when it happened which made me think break or something worse but it's stable and relatively pain free. I can't run on it but I can get around.

You probably should get it checked out. My client that just left has a small splint/cast on her foot as a result of a similar thing. She rolled over on her ankle, walked it off and thought she would be ok, but after a week it wasn't getting any better. she went to the emerg. room and they x-rayed it and she has a stress fracture in one of the long bones along the top of her foot. I also worked with a girl who did the same thing, just rolled off her shoe and ended up in a cast for 6 weeks because of the same thing.
Better safe then sorry.

Have you seen a lawyer, maybe you could sue and get some money out of it.

I did basically the same thing. The dr said that I pulled & strained the ligaments in my ankle. So, i've been going to pt 2x a week for over 2 months.

Bats, I've done the same thing to my right ankle about 3 or 4 times in my life playing basketball.
Even though you can walk on it, you should avoid doing that as much as possible. You want to let it heal, or it will give you trouble down the road, like a dull ache when it rains. Keep it elevated whenever you can, and alternate heat and cold on it.

the bruising is from the pooling of the blood around the injured area to protect it. a lot of times when you walk around on a sprained ankle all the blood will pool in a straight line towards the bottom of your foot just due to gravity. it won't kill you to go to a dr & get an x-ray. its always better to be safe than sorry. if you don't go, ice it a lot (for no more than 20 minutes at a time) & wrap it in an ace bandage for the swelling )making sure to cover your heel. any gap in the bandage will cause the swelling to try to escape. so your toes may swell up a bit, but it's normal for when you have an ace on. & don't sleep with it on. popping is occasionally a sign that something is wrong. but i'm talking about popping during the initial injury. not the kind of popping you get when you move your arm like this or that THAT IS TOTALLY NORMAL PEOPLE!!!! IT JUST MEANS THAT YOU STRETCHED OUT THE TENDONS OR LIGAMENTS AT ONE TIME & THEY WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THEIR PERFECT POSITION IN THE GROOVE OF THE BONE. THEREFORE IT MAY POP A BIT OVER A BONEY RIDGE (can you tell that i get asked that question a lot??)
but, i think you should go to a doctor to get it checked out. not going & making sure things are ok could possibly make whatever it is a whole lot worse :glurps:

Why he would listen to folks on the internets rather than to me, I will never know, but he's actually going to go to the doctor tomorrow.

Don't worry...we haven't forgotten how disgusting your feet & hands are. Pay attention, we are talking about ankles here.
I would personally getting the swelling down and visit a physician. At the least maybe they'll give you an aircast to stabilize the ankle.

You're better than that.
I missed this thread. The weird thing being that I did the same exact thing to my ankle on the same exact day. Foot is swollen, badly bruised but I can walk on it pain free. The only time it hurts is when I put all my wiehgt on that side of my foot or try to put all my weight on it while walking down stairs.

I was at the doctor today, for a different reason. He took a look at it, said to take it easy with it for a while, it will take a while to heal, nothing else they can really do.

this is how ER's decide if an ankle X Ray is necessary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottawa_ankle_rules)
X-rays are only required if there is bony pain in the malleolar or midfoot area, and any one of the following:
* Bone tenderness along the distal 6 cm of the posterior edge of the tibia or tip of the medial malleolus
* Bone tenderness along the distal 6 cm of the posterior edge of the fibula or tip of the lateral malleolus
* Bone tenderness at the base of the fifth metatarsal (for foot injuries).
* Bone tenderness at the navicular bone (for foot injuries).
* An inability to bear weight both immediately and in the emergency department for four steps.

most will do them anyway. they know they'll get reimbursed for them from your insurance company. so why not. they will do a lot of unnecessary shit thanks to that.

I'm going to my podiatrist tomorrow. The bruises are nasty on my foot, swelling still isn't fully down.
Updates as they happen!

No break. Grade 2 sprain. The doctor was impressed with my pain management. Ice, rest, and a brace recommended.

Good stuff. Keep it rested obviously...follow orders, say your prayers, eat some vitamins... etc.
The key thing is FUCKING REST IT UNTIL IT'S BETTER a friend of mine keeps walking around on her foot after spraining her ankle for months and is now walking around like Dr.House on a cane. I wanna smack her upside the head... her damn foot is gonna fall off.

a nice little trick is to fold up an extra comforter or blanket & place it under your mattress at the foot of the bed so that your ankle will be elevated while you're sleeping to help diminish the swelling. that way you don't have to worry about balancing your foot on a pillow while you're sleeping.
