The "Good bands you can't get into" thread made me think about this.
What bands do you know who started to totally suck once they cleaned up their act? Here's a starter

Never were the same. They started sounding depressed and preachy after cleaning up their act. I still love them, but they're a shell of what they were as a band.
Any others?

Other than Frusciante hadn't they all quit drugs by the time they made this album? More straight than not.

Yeah, but he probably shouldn't count because I always thought that dying was the thing that made him give up drugs.

Absolutely. The guys that recorded "Pump" can't possibly be the same band that made "Rocks".

Power of Equality wasn't preachy?
Tom Waits got better when he quit drinking.

Yeah, you're right. But they were having more fun when they were preachy back then.
Tom Waits got better when he quit drinking.
Thats because you like artists when they sound more depressed.

I wouldnt say Waits sounded any more or less depressed after he quit drinking.
The Doors went downhill once Morrison sobered up.
He only sobered up in death.
How about bands that got better after they started doing drugs?
Pretty good progression here:
