View Full Version : What One Song Defines Rock 'n' Roll?
Let's say Beethoven or Mozart got in a time machine and appeared here today. Or maybe an alien from outer space landed and wanted to learn about our music and culture. In trying to explain to them what Rock 'n' Roll is, what ONE song would you play them?
Please, don't forget the "Roll" part of Rock 'n' Roll. I don't want to see any head banging music or sleepy Pink Floyd shit.
Thank you.
While I'm tempted to go back to the classics like Chuck Berry or Elvis, I think my choice would have to be Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane's "My Baby Gives It Away" off the incredibly underrated "Rough Mix" album.

I've been saying it for years. If there was one song I had to put in a capsule, to define rock & roll...
"Stay With Me" - The Faces.
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/43r0hrV71Js&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/43r0hrV71Js&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
AWESOME choices Dr. Joe and Tub! I can agree with both of them.
Bill Haley & The Comets is about as classic and genre defining as it gets, and I've always said "Stay With Me" is easily one of the 10 greatest Rock 'n' Roll songs ever.

First of all: I enjoy a thread whose first page features appearances by 2 Doctors. It's like the Tardis has gone haywire.
Second: if Rock and/or Roll is best defined by its earliest recorded precedent, then Tampa Red or Charlie Patton or some other BLACK blues, jump blues or gospel Mo F would have to top the list. On the other hand, if we're talking about when whitey first co-opted the blues and decided to market it as Rock and Roll, then Bill Haley would be number one with a comet.
Third: If we are talking Rock and Roll as consumed by Mozart and/or Beethoven, I would think that they would probably agree: "Ach du lieber, Venn it comes to repeating Zee same musical phrase over und over, Pachelbel is sooo 300 years ago!"
Fourth: the correct answer: Take On Me by Aha.

Man - a lot of good posts/choices! However, when I think of Rock & Roll I automatically think of one song:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yBaP_sNz-1E&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yBaP_sNz-1E&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I am not sure if it works for everyone, but it is one I personally love. A close second is this:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LJMnES7WoT4&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LJMnES7WoT4&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

You guys are pulling up some great stuff.
But now I am thinking. You guys with the 50's songs, is this pure rock and roll? Or is this a milestone. I still stand by my choice, but maybe it is just perspective.
The Beach Boys, The Yardbirds, The DC5, have so far been disregarded. How about Motown?
Who's to say, that through somebody else's eyes "Fade To Black" is the ultimate Rock and Roll song.
I'd love to have all of you together. A couple of cases, a pack of Reds, and discuss this topic until the sun came up!

Well, if you go back and reread the title of the thread and my original post, you'll see most people didn't understand.
What One Song Defines Rock 'n' Roll?
Let's say Beethoven or Mozart got in a time machine and appeared here today. Or maybe an alien from outer space landed and wanted to learn about our music and culture. In trying to explain to them what Rock 'n' Roll is, what ONE song would you play them?
Please, don't forget the "Roll" part of Rock 'n' Roll. I don't want to see any head banging music or sleepy Pink Floyd shit.
Thank you.

the powers that be
are writing 'The History of Earth'.
in the chapter on music it will say this about Rock and Roll:
"From about 1955 to 1995 the predominant form of music was a style known as Rock and Roll. Rock and Roll had many sub-categories, but the essence of Rock and Roll can be felt by listening to the song...................."
Fill in the blank
what song for you is
most representative
of the very essence
of rock and roll?
i have given this much thought
and i have a ton of 'also rans'
but if i had to pick just one song
to represent the essence of rock
it would be:

I would put these songs separately as the ones that represent the history of rock and roll, but combining them makes it even better.

So you're saying you just wanted songs that you like, and anything else is "too cool for the room"? My choice, nor epo's was obscure in any way. They were both big hits, and were very influential for multiple generations of fans and musicians.

I'm well aware of who the fuck Cream is. My point is that any room that thinks that "Sunshine of your love" is the greatest rock n' roll song ever, is a room that I'm way to fucking cool for.
And for the record, Sunshine is not nearly as iconic as Johnny B. Goode.
