Me, from almost a year ago:

Are you kidding me? When Ron and Fez first set up your reviews they talked about MafiaLife and what it was, and even encouraged Fez to play. In fact, there are always a few jokes about the game.

And since you have advertising on XM, people would know what MafiaLife is!

Therefore, if you appear as MafiaLifeChris, you're plugging your site. This is not very hard to understand.

I told you, if you want to appear, appear as Chris from Brooklyn. Otherwise, you're plugging your site and your move to pull advertising from XM is entirely false.

Quite honestly, if something happened with TGI Fridays or something like that, I would immediately change my name to either Matty from Jersey or Matty Tenbats. It's not that hard.

And who is trying to derail the thread? We're having a conversation where you tried to gain accolades for what you were doing from the community, I posted a few questions about how true your stance was about XM, and you took it very, very personally.

Remember Chris - I'm not the one who is namecalling. I'm just pointing out the holes in your logic, and you are the one who is completely overreacting. You want to call me a hater? Remember, I'm not the one who threatens people over a messageboard when they disagree with you.

Good luck, Christopher Robin, and god bless.

The scary fact that is being overlooked is that there are 200 MILLION guns!

It pains me to say this, but i cant disagree more with Ronnie on this one....it seems his answer for gun violence would be more guns (b/c law abiding people could "protect" themselves)

If you take that logic to its absurd conclusion, the country would be safest (in terms of gun violence) if EVERYONE was packin heat.

Nonsense.
(i tried calling in with this, but whoever was running the phones wasnt to impressed...lol)

comes back to the question of wtf is wrong with this country that everyone needs to be armed to be safe...

From Freakonomics:

In a given year in the US there is one drowning for every 11,000 pools. [6 million pools = approx 550 child drowning per year; kids under ten].

There is one child killed by a gun for every 1 million guns [200 million guns = 175 under ten die from guns per year]

Your kid is roughly 100 times more likely to die in a swimming accident at Todd's house then in gunplay at Ron's.

Yeah, but if a player at the blackjack table plays wrong how many kids die?

Mike Teacher
04-03-2008, 10:16 AM
That's a good stat, but it's still kinda flawed. If you have a responsible gun owner, who has 5 guns, it makes the stat off. Not too many people have 5 pools.

Pap Bear absolutely; and the numbers will fluctuate.

I was lucky enough to have a copy of Freakonomics next to me and remembered the 'Pool Vs. Guns' thing.

The aim of the chapter wasnt about guns at all, but at how bad humans are at assessing risk; "The risks that scare people and the risks that kill people are very different.'

RAAMONE

I think 200 millions guns and only about 200 kids get killed is amazing

its almost worth losing a couple hundred kids to be able to have so many guns

I don't get this, who's going around acting like pools are safe for little kids? Don't some states make you build a fence around the pool of a certain height because they're dangerous for children? I don't see any states making people build fences around their house if they own a gun.

That's the #1 reason not to get a gun. If it means the difference between protecting yourself and feeling you need it to live by.

there was a time in the usa when everyone owned a gun, it was considered being a good citizen. only a freeloader would expect police to protect them personally 24/7. only a fool would wait to be a victim. in modern america, not everyone needs to own a gun. but if the criminals don't know who is or isn't packing, it makes them much more likely to think there is no risk to abusing a good citizen!

facts are facts - as gun ownership increases, violent crime rates go down. as gun ownership is more restricted, violent crime goes up.

we are a nation obsessed with violence, especially gun violence. I really think that this actually tips the mental scale of people teetering on insanity. To wit, if guns didnt exist and the only alternative was say, procuring an army tank, the difficulty of obtaining the tank would act as a deterent from the crime being committed. Sure, the "criminal" could lash out in other ways, but there would be not death by tank.
Its already been said that getting a gun is easy (for those who want to get one). The fact that you could get it that easy, i think, only promotes these kinds of crimes.

I think either I didn't get my point across or you read it wrong. I was referring to the "scared of the world" part of the post. Meaning if you're scared of the world you have more going on than just protecting yourself ie. paranoia. So I meant a person who is paranoid shouldn't have a gun to alleviate it.

Shouldn't some sort of an adjustment be made for proximity and/or usage? A pool is probably a million times more likely to be used by a child than a gun. That is a pool is exposed much more to a situation where a drowning is a possible outcome, whereas the gun in your vietnam vet uncle's attic probably has not had ever any contact with children. If you normalize the data to include only guns that come into contact with children, or are housed in homes with children and compare that to pools at homes with children, I'd bet that the data changes significantly.

This is why statistics suck. Any asshat with a math degree can mine the data to show us whatever he wants.

Well said.....beside, there are nonviolent uses for pools.....in fact, the whole idea of using a pool touches on the complete opposite emotion of violence.

Guns have ONE function....to injure, kill or maim. Thats it. Whether you couch it in terms of home protection, or hunting.....their ONLY function is to destroy.

Its very simple, people.

Community rehabilitation order: 62.6%

Drug treatment and testing order: 88.9%

Community punishment order: 38.9%

Community punishment and rehabilitation order: 54.4%

"Criminals" is a word that is thrown around WAY too lightly. There are too many people thrown in jail or prison for actions that shouldn't really be criminalized (or at least, not be serious crimes), and they end up getting lumped in with truly bad people. If you say, "criminals are criminals. kill em lock em up don't let em out", you are also saying "don't break ANY law, or you will be executed or locked up for life".

Im a sane individual (i hope). Do i believe in the death penalty yes. Do i think that every one on death row should die no. There are far to many people in jail for crimes they either didn't comit or commited in areas where they are punished far beyond the means of any rational thinking person. If im driving my car while im drunk and i hit someone and they die or are incapacitated i don't deserve to see the light of day. I took that drink I got behind the wheel and i drove. Its all on me. If i take a gun and kill someone with it because they have something i wanted same situation. If i stab them same . I might be insane then i go to the insane asylum and get help and if i'm better well then im better in jail. We could go over every case one bye one and decide whats right or wrong but that would take forever. And what i think may not be what you think. However Im sure there are individuals that are released for commiting crimes (bad nasty ones) that you say how could they be released. Those are the criminals i was refering too. There are far too many things criminalized that should at best be regulated. Conspiracy to smoke pot is a felony in az or was at some point in time. My Step dad well guess what hes a fellon since he was 18 thats not the crime i was refering to. I'm just tired of seeing our individual freedoms impinged on little bits at a time while the rights of (Horid brutal) are being restored i've not done anything that should preclude me from owning a fire arm so why prevent me from owning one.
