Really? Jenny is a much different personality than a Jenn.

Plus, my wife is a Jenny and it fits her perfectly.

It's actually Jenn now. Get with the program!

And both my wife and sister are Jennifers. One is Jenny, the other is Jenn. Jenny is much more youthful.

Not exactly the same vibe, but I haaaaate the whole "J-Lo-ing" of names.

J-Lo and ARod and that's it! Everyone else sounds RIDICULOUS!!

I hear some Mets fans trying to call David Wright "D-Wright" and I want to hurl them from the upper deck of Shea.
Anyone tries to call me "C-Circ" gets a thumb to the eye.

My chicks mom actually was thinking of this when she named her. She is named Elizabeth and hates all the nicknames except for Beth, so thats what she named her.

My nickname kind of stinks but I am like the third Rafael in my Family. So there was Ralph Sr , I was just Ralph and my uncle was Raffy.

I once answered a trivial question to name the 3 kennedy brothers as John, Robert, and Theodore. I though Teddy Roosevelt - Theodore, Teddy Kennedy - Theodore. Possible some chimpmonks influence in there too,

I don't like Katie, Kate is such an awesome name, why would anyone be a 'katie.'

Hands down the worst example of this happens in Hockey. As a canadian I'm annoyed by this frequently.

Anybody whose name starts with M basically becomes "Marty". All commentators do it. Should be reserved for Martin's, but it's done to Matt's They do it with weird eurotrash names like Mats. Some kid gets called up from the minors nobody's ever heard of before and within 2 minutes his name is Marty.

When first and middle names sound so good together they become abbreviated.

My boyfriend's full name is Timothy John and he said his Dad would call him T.J. every now and then growing up. So now i call him "Teej" to poke fun.

I don't like "Nick" or "Nikki" for Nicole. "Alex" for Alexandra. "Jess" for Jessica. "Chris" or "Chrissy" for Christina.

They're all ugly abbreviated.

My name is Charles but I've gone by "Chad" my entire life, in fact when I was little I used to get pissed when people would call me Charles, not really sure why.

I've always hated when people try and shorten it to "Chas"...doesn't even seem like a real name. Most the time you meet a "Chas" he turns out to be a douche anyway.

It comes from the xand part in the middle. My brother is Alexander, but my parents shortened it to Xande (pronounced like 'zandee'). So zande/sandy isn't too far off. My mother had 'sandy' alexanders in her family, so I think his name is sort of a play off that, too.

He's probably going to find this thread if he searches for his name. Not a lot of people that share his name out there.

04-10-2008, 07:49 AM
My sons are Thomas and Richard. I always called them Tommy and Ricky since before they were born, and they learned to write their names that way.

When they got to kindergarten, the school told them that they HAD to write their "given names", so ever since then, they've been called Thomas and Richard by their teachers, and that's what their friends know them as. The trolls at their school won't let anyone go by a "nickname" or an abbreviation, or a middle name, etc.

They're used to it by now, and most all of us have gotten used to calling them by their full given names, but I'd never heard of anything like this when I was growing up.

Anyone else experience this? Or is this another antiquated, backwoods Alabama thang?

No, they do that up here too. I guess its so it doesn't confuse the kid but I would assume he/she would know their own name. I know in my daughter's daycare class there is a kid DJ and the teachers will only call him Donald Joseph.
