I wanted to post about a band I think is great and underapreciated, but that made me think about this topic instead.

List bands who you feel are totally sincere, and bands you think are driven by the members mutual recognition of their own talent as a commodity.

Impossibles v. Weezer- Impossibles were the band I was originally thinkign of, whom I think are incredible and need more attention. They have the early 90s indie thing with elements of punk, ska and early emo (pretend I didn't say emo, pretend I said post hardcore) I hate weezer, I think most of their music is written for the purpose of getting river's d wet in chubby, impressionable, and/or asian ponds.

Shellac v. Mclusky- Two great bands but Mclusky seems like 'we'll play these songs as long as these stories are funny to us (and they've since broken up) while Shellac seems more like an assault on music to me.

Husker Du- I dont think anyone has ever sounded like they've meant what they're singing more than Bob Mould.

Greenday and Blink 182 are bands that started out with a decent ammount of sincerity, and they decided they needed to make 'mature' albums which I think are completely shitty.

Alot of bands have been getting big the last few years that seem overly intellectual- I cant imagine that Deerhoof, or Vampire Weekend or bands like that would make the albums that they do if it was their only shot at making music. Be Your Own Pet is another band I really like that seems to be around because they grew up in houses with recording studios in them. There was a time when band's looked like they didn't go to college.

Shellac v. Mclusky

Aren't those two loose-cannon cops from Boston? They wrecked half the city!

Crankcase is a band that means it.
They pulled off a 7 minute version of "hash pipe" and was very serious about it.

The Doors always meant it.

I know what you mean realmenhatelife. It is for this exact reason that I cannot for the life of me stand to watch any of those manufacture the band shows on tv.
I get more enjoyment listening to a band who plays because they LOVE music and genuinely enjoy getting together and cranking out music. They also make for a far better live show.

Doesn't the "meaning it" or "sincerity" quotent automatically peak with Fugazi?

And damn, I miss McLusky.

Not sure how blink 182 was ever "sincere" until they tried to do that serious album at the end. Everything up until then seemed pretty willfully goofy and smartass.

Blink has a rep for being really goofy, but some of their content has a really thoughtful, sweet edge or whatever. To me, what makes them very geniune and worthwhile, is that instead of doing the intellectual thing and writing a song about a young stupid dude who just doesn't seem to fit with the people around him that are more mature, they WERE young stupid guys writing songs. To me, any attempt at art shouldn't be concious that its trying to be artistic.

Fugazi is pretty right on, though.

To respond to 'bands noone has heard of' I'm just posting about the bands I listen to/are in my realm/my peers like etc. I'm definately interested in hearing what people have to say about more popular bands.

Tool?

They USED to really mean it, but not anymore. You go to their shows and they just play their radio hits.

Plus, they did this small venue tour a couple of years back. And instead of releasing the tickets so their real fans could get in, they gave more than half of the tickets to local radio stations so they could play their fucking songs more. It irritated me so much.

And I'd like to add Linkin Park to the list of insincere bands.

not at all, even though i've posted before in support of a band breaking up and starting new projects rather than maturing. I feel like in these two instances the band went from the organic process of 'heres the music we play and what it makes us' to 'heres what we want to be and how we get there' It's calculated and smells alot like a marketing dept. to me. The stuff these guys did before was way more cutting edge. Do I really need to listen to a 40 year old dude in eyeliner and a skinny tie tell me how bad bush sucks?
The other thing that sucks is dudes like greenday will always try and reverse engineer their lives now into being consistent with their former ideals, so they cant be accused of 'selling out' I'm not gonna say they sold out, I dont think they did, but I'm also not gonna believe that the dude in Pinhead Gunpowder wanted to be the dude billy joe is now.
