In the last two months I've gone on a shopping spree growing my movie collection.

I've probably bought about 30 movies. They're cheap, Amazon has great deals on pre-ordering, DVD box sets and free shipping!

I'm starting to feel I have to stop! But I keep checking their deals!

I'm not the best person to offer counsel on this issue. I'm a man who paid money on ebay for Flintstones cigar wrappers from Holland and a Fred Flintstone ashtray marketed for the show from 1961.

Amazon's been my main supplier of books, trade paperbacks, DVDs, and other things for about the last 4 years.

I usually get about 2-3 different things from it a month.

Are you getting regular dvds or are you moving to blu-ray?

I don't have a good TV yet to invest in Blu-Ray. So I'm going with regular. I figure in a couple years the Blu-Ray price will come down as it may eventually be the only format out there. The blu-ray discs are more expensive, sometimes a lot more.

Once you take that first hit of Video Crack, its tough not to be an instant addict. Like me. Between eBay and Amazon, and a local flea market I pay about half of what Borders and the other fuckers charge for Blu Ray.

I just compared the one thing I thought Amazon was charging a lot for - The Sopranos DVDs. Your site is cheaper by about $5 per season. I still think $55 bucks per season is a lot - especially the last season - part 1 & 2... 55$ each. Now THAT is getting raped. I guessing that's HBO's fault.

I've decided to give Blue-Ray at least another year before I crack. The main reason, aside from holding out for cheaper players, is because it usually takes a little while for a new format to hit its stride, and I've got a feeling that a lot of the current Blue-Ray discs out there will be replaced with much better ones in the near future, kind of like what happened with DVDs. Just a couple of weekends ago, I traded in a giant stack of non-anamorphic DVDs that I bought back in '99 or so... all stuff that's received much better releases in the past decade. Most of my DVDs actually look just fine to me on my 40" LCD. I very rarely buy the big special-effects movies anyway. I don't think I necessarily need something like One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest in HD. Stuff like Brazil and Blade Runner would be pretty nice though.

Sometimes they do buy 1 season get 1 season free as well on select shows. I love that website  And I always use www.currentcodes.com before I buy anything online.

Yep, and how quick and deep the catalog builds. The fact that I can get Beer Leauge and Alvin and Chipmunks, but not the first three Alien movies bums me out.

Or the Matrix.

Amazon just sent me an offer for a free Blu-ray disc if I buy 2 Blu-Ray disc. I was going to do it, but there was only one disc I really wanted. The rest I didn't want or had on DVD and felt no need to replace them.

Aren't you guys scared to be "Wouldn't let go of the 8-track guy"? Disc media has to be on it's way out. The small rack of DVD's in our living room looks out of place to me. Even if you're buying a bargain DVD at 5.99, you still have to watch it twice or more to make it more cost effective than renting, and the things don't pay rent or dust themselves. We have DVD's that are still sealed.

Even when we go to downloadable content, if I have great DVDs, I'm still going to watch the DVDs.

For me, the downloadable content makes it preferrable to DVD in terms of obtaining the movie, and storage. But I already own the DVDS, and I have storage space for them (the DVDs are not in their boxes. They are in large binders.). So why not keep them rather than purchasing them again when they become in downloadable format?

I still haven't warmed up to the idea of downloading things rather than having a physical product. I think I'm the last guy left who doesn't shop on iTunes.

I'm not buying any BluRays until somebody takes this $3,000 worth of old Laser Discs off my hands. Damn these upgrades.

I have a ton of DVD's and I have a DishNetwork HD receiver with a huge HDDVR capacity. And I've told my family not to buy me any more DVD's. (But I did buy No Country for Old Men last month. What a great movie.)

Oh yeah, and disc media is dead as Dillinger, but some of us, like me, have the 'I gotta have it' syndrome. My life has no purpose or mening and is incomplete unless I have my core go-to movies. Pathetic, I know.

And someone else mentioned laserdiscs. Yeah I had hundreds once too.

Lets see I did this before for Close Enounters but Ive bought CE3K, so far

-VHS
-VHS Special Edition
-Laserdisc
-Criterion Collection Laserdisc
-DVD
-DVD Special Edition
-DVD Ultimate Edition
-and now Blu Ray

Yow. Thats bad.

RCA SelectaVision VideoDisc or as it was called "Needle Vision". I never had those either.

But I do have plenty of old VHS tapes that I use to record the Ron & Fez show every week day in case I miss some of the show. The VHS HiFi audio is really good and with my Polk reference XM tuner I can see the pad data on my TV as I listen.

Traditional DVDs like we have now will eventually go away but there's no reason not to buy/keep what you have as long as they continue to make players ( which should be really cheap when they are secondary ).

I still have some old stuff ( mostly 80's horror movies ) on VHS that is either not yet on DVD or I haven't bothered buying which I still pop in the VCR and watch whwn I feel like it.

The VCR to DVD move wasn't as dramatic as the cassette tape to CD was in that there is still some use for old VHS tapes because you can still get a VCR but try finding a car that still has a cassette player ( actually a few months ago I was pricing used Range Rovers and saw one from 2004 that had one ).

I think you're still looking at several years before the companies offer movies ONLY on Blu-Ray ( which would be how they'd " force " that on the consumer ). In my opinion they'd lose too much money if they'd do that right now.

I haven't purchased a DVD in years.
I'd rather just use Netflix and burn myself a copy.

We had a video disk player. It was as big as a record and came in a hard plactic casing. It was, I think, litterally months before vhs/betamax came out. I remember watching Watership Down with the first rental we got from Shipley's. The other was Heaven Can Wait, but I couldn't watch that one because it was rated R.

one other thing, if you use amazon, get the amazon price watch add-on for firefox. it will tell you if any products you buy from amazon drop price (i think it's for a 30 day period). when that happens the add-on sends you an email, you click a link in the email, click on the item you purchased, ask amazon to refund you since the price dropped and then amazon gives you money back. it's really a great deal and requires minimal effort on your part.

apparently amazon rescinded their 30 day price guarantee:

Thanks for writing to us asking about post-order price policies for items "Melissa & Doug Shape Sorting Cube" purchased from Amazon.com.

You may have been able to take advantage of post-purchase discounts on orders you placed in the past, but that policy was discontinued on September 1, 2008.

Their universal wish list button is the devil.

I go on to Barnes & Noble, Etsy. etc-search within a topic and then 70 clicks later i have my Christmas list.

I was just looking through some dvds at amazon.com and comparing the prices at other sites like target.com. Why the heck is a season of something $48.59 at target.com and yet $20.49 at amazon.com? Sucks for people who don't know enough to comparison shop...
