I want a "permanent" email address in case I decide to ditch Cablevision as my internet provider, which I probably will.

Which of the free, web-based emails is best? Yahoo? Gmail? Hotmail? Another one I don't know about?

Thanks.

I LOVE gmail... you never have to delete anything.

It kind of depends on how you will be using your account - for basic access and personal email, any of them will work well for you.

If you need/want a lot of options and flexibility, Hotmail is the best choice IMO. Of course I am an Outlook user, and the new version of the Windows Live Hotmail is very similar.

Hotmail also has a lot of great options like importing and exporting Contacts, customizable junkmail/spam filters (including a 'Safe' list), and the ability to forward your Hotmail to another account. With the free Office Outlook Connector download from Microsoft, you can now download your messages and sync contacts with Outlook (for the 2003 & 2007 versions); and if you buy the subscription, you can also sync your Calendar and more. There are a lot of other options I haven't covered.

Yahoo has most of the same options, but to really make it flexible you need to purchase the Mail Plus plan. It is a pretty good investment for $20 a year. However, several of the added features come free with Hotmail.

Gmail is pretty good, but I don't like the way messages are organized. You can't create new folders; you have to individually give messages a "Label" to organize them. However, Gmail provides POP support out of the gate - although you have to enable the option.

I'm not really familiar with any of the "smaller" free services, but there are probably some pretty good ones out there. Here is a link to the "Top 14 Free Email Services" (http://email.about.com/od/freeemailreviews/tp/free_email.htm)that I found. It is a little dated (ex: some of the 'cons' for Hotmail have been addressed), but it should be able to point you in the right direction.

Hope this helps Budday!

I know I can link mine to my Outlook but I can't get the goddamn thing to work and I have lost all patience with it. I know it can be done, but I can't figure it out. I have the instructions.... I have a book... it just won't happen. I'm stoopid.

Gmail is the best. You dont need folders because the search is so good.

Correction... It's Gvail.

I love Gmail, too. Plus, there's two different ways I can get it on my Blackberry. It can either go to my incoming messages folder, or you can download Gmail for Blackberry, and it looks just like it does on my comp.

I just remembered another thing I love about Gmail. Gmail Notifier (http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/notifier_windows.html) can run in your start menu. It lets you know whenever a new email arrives, and even tells you who it's from, and shows you the first several words of the email.

Based on the response so far I think we can conclude that yahoo mail is for communists and only the newlyweds use hotmail.

I wanted to be mean but I am still happy for MM.

You mean step by step directions like these (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77689)?

I love my gmail, and they really show you how to connect and work with everything, from Outlook to the iPhone if you check the help center there.

I like my Gmail account, but I've had the same Hotmail account for over a decade now. Works pretty well.

It was made of wood and brass and tubes and we sent e-mails by pigeon, and we liked it!

 Thanks Budday!

I have accounts with all 3, and each has it's merits. I guess my biggest problem with Gmail is what Rouski likes - the way emails are organized. I simply don't like the way they do it and there is no way to customize organization other than labels, but they are awkward to use at best (IMO).

Yeah, I'm happy with GMail here too. I don't miss the lack of folders at all, due to the good search feature. It's also good that if you get in one of those long email chains, it's all in one email, not 18, with a "Re:Re:Re:Re:Re:Re:Re:Re" subject line.
