I noticed that when Marilu Henner came on today, (probably) Earl blasted the Taxi music. He always goes for the most obvious choice for guests. Has anyone ever flipped out and said, "JESUS CHRIST, TURN THAT OFF! IT'S BEEN 30 GODDAMN YEARS!"

Haha he's not too keen on creative thought.

To his credit, it's about the only thing that he could play, that people would immediately associate with her.

When Brian Johnson from AC/DC did a phoner Earl played some obscure solo song which led to a bit of a mess for Fez. Afterwards Ron said something like "Don't you know how radio works? You intro the guest with the hit and end with the new song." Maybe he does it that way because that's the way the hosts want it?

The best is when the music makes you think about the connection. Paul Schaeffer has all but made it his signature.

If a guest comes on, he wont play the obvious, it may be a signature song from the guests movie filmography, or something with their name in the title; something a bit obscure so us cooler-then-the-room people can tell everyone else, 'Hey! Thats the music from his first film! Cool!' and feel cool.

But most important, it should be a good solid recognizable song with the riff/hook

IMHO

One of my favorites was when Letterman had Cokie Roberts on, and the band played "White Lines".

Hello Exactly !

Mikeyboy youve seen it; sometimes the guests turns around in surprise or mentions the song; it surprises them. They get it. Beats me why I like this but is shows Schaeffer/the band/the show is at least doing some Thinking about the guest.

He could have played the song she sang in the movie Johnny Dangerously.
