Heading down to New Orleans this weekend for the last trip with the boys pre-wedding...anyone been there fairly recently? Last time I went was 2000, which obviously is a lifetime ago considering everything.

What's open, what's not, what to avoid. Any help would be appreciated.

Actually the French Quarter wasn't particularly affected by the flooding. What did happen is a lot of the people who worked in all the French Quarter places had their homes affected, and a lot left the city. But I do think the tourist stuff is back up and running.

I drove through in 2006 and it was completely random what was affected and wasn't. One side of the highway was fine, the other side all the houses had been flooded out. Although on the flooded side close to half the houses were being rebuilt. It was something else.

Dad, did the lost city of New Orleans actually exist?

No one knows Chris. No one knows.

I was there in October of 07 with my wife and the FQ is fine. It was Halloween weekend and it was insanely busy. Most of the damaged areas are further away from the FQ. I was also there in 06 and did some work for Habitat for Humanity in the lower 9th ward and it was not pretty then and is still bad now. If you stick the FQ you should be fine.
I have been to NOLA 7 times and here is my list of things you need to eat and drink
Boneless Stuffed Chicken Wings at NOLA
Frozen Handgranade at the Tropical Isle
Peanutbutter Bacon Burger at Yo Mama's (trust me it is GREAT)
at least 1 Big Ass Beer

Enjoy the trip

I lived down there last year. The quarter is fine. Stay around there and you'll be fine. Everything is open. Uptown is OK too. You'll be fine. Best hotel is the Crown Royal at the corner of Bourbon and Canal.

I was there last year and had a blast. The French Quarter is doing great, everyone there is super nice to tourists because they need the $$$ after Katrina since tourism took a major hit. It was fairly easy to get reservations at the better restaurants. Be sure to go to Mother's for the takeout jambalaya and to Central Grocery for a muffuletta sandwich.
