On Saturday, April 19, 2008, hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country will celebrate “Record Store Day.” (http://www.recordstoreday.com/)

On this day, all of these stores will simultaneously link and act as one with the purpose of celebrating the culture and unique place that they occupy both in their local communities and nationally.

What a shitty job they did with this. I was just trying to find out what the local NYC record stores were doing for Record Store Day, and there's no way to sort the participators regionally so you have to page all the way through all of them, and the website is slow as shit. There also isn't any way to tell exactly how the participants are participating. Some stores list how they are participating on their individual websites, most do not. Also, there is a list of in-store performances on the right side of the main page that lists venues but not locations. There is a second page with full information on the performances, but that's just poor design. It's too bad this was so half-assed. I would love to support these stores because far too much of my youth was spent flipping through the inventory in small record stores.

Seriously - talk about a POS site. If you are looking for an independent store in your area, why in the hell would you want them listed alphabetically by name without being able to cross-reference by state and/or city? Freaking idiotic.

IMO they also should have had some sort of "standard" specials or events that all of the participants share, then some stores could have events or specials above and beyond that standard. Something like "at least 10% off all purchases, plus check your local participating location for additional events and/or specials."

This was a good concept, but very poorly executed. Record stores need all the help they can get these days, but this is not the way to do it.
