Right now I have a Maxtor external drive attached to my laptop and although it's small I still have to carry it around with me anywhere I go when I wanna save stuff on it ( and also my iPod music is all stored on it ).

I'm moving into my new house next weekend and will be setting up a wireless netwrok and what I wanted to know is if there's a way to keep that drive someplace that will aallow me to save to it even if it's not directly attached to the computer.

Like say I have a desktop in the office but take the laptop into the living room would I be able to save to and access the external drive ?

I'm guessing I'm going to need another piece of hardware to which the drive would be atatched but I'm not sure.

Any ideas ?

Sorry I had to bump this post because I want to know the answer.

Sure I could go on the internet and research it myself but I usually find the posters here much more helpful and obvioulsy it's less tedious for me.

attach the drive to the desktop computer.

then you need to map a drive to the desktop from your laptop. mapping a drive is easy as long as both computers are on the same workgroup which they should be by default.

so say the desktop has the removable drive on it, we will for now consider it drive f:\

right click on the drive and share it, naming it whatever you want. For now i will say leave the default which is F

then on the latop, right click on my network places and map a drive. enter in the computer name of the desktop (which can be found by right clicking on my computer on the desktop, and going to the computer name tab.

in the Map A Drive screen on the laptop, choose the drive letter you want it to be, it does not matter, and then put in the following underneath

\\desktopcomputerName\F$

and you are done
