How freaking funny is that - I thought the same thing!!!

My second thought was that this was a "how to prepare" thread.

I agree - good promotion.

That is a good book, and could be used for workable tactics and psychological training, as it is set after a zombie war. Another book to recommend by the same author would be this one.

I read both, and they are key to survival during the zombie-pacalypse.

I'm slowly stocking up water. I have about 100 gallons now. I have a few weapons, but I really need a high speed, low recoil rifle round for dome'ing the Z's.. I still wonder if .22wmr's can cut it. I suspect I will use a 9mm in a converted AR instead.

9mm has a bit more stopping power, and it will also work in my handgun.

Anyone have a good source for MRE's?

I read World War Z last month - a great read, I highly recommend it. I'm reading the Zombie Survival Guide now, but it's kinda boring. Too much "If you do X, prepare to be zombie food" stuff. But WWZ was great.

This book is awesome and absolutely hysterical. Remember, its not a question of 'IF,' its a question of 'when.'

I'm assuming you mean a 9mm has more stopping power than a .22wmr, and not a 5.56 NATO?

Either way, the 9mm or the 5.56 NATO are good choices as ammo is plentiful and easy to come by. I personally prefer a 7.62x39mm as it has better ballistics yet and is used in virtually every nation on earth. While North America has not accepted the AK47 or it's variants on an official level, there are more than enough kicking around to make it another viable option, plus they are cheaper than an AR-15, and some would argue more reliable. At the moment I believe I have 4 1/2 cases of surplus 7.62x39 mm, that works out to around 5000 rounds, should take out a couple drones. For close work though you know I will be going to my trusty collection of shotguns.

I can't wait for the zombie war.

Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z really did rule; the 'handbook' style and the case histories were great devices. Much of the humor may be so dry as to be unnoticed in the survival guide.

If not recommended already in thread; two books similar to WWZ are by Brian Keene, 'The Rising' and 'City of the Dead' great books with some flaws, worth the read, imho.

I dont get the zombie fascination, but I'm in.

I know they're contemplating making a movie of WWZ, and I hope they keep the documentary style of the book. It should end up like a Ken Burns documentary. "Ken Burns' Night of the Living Dead".

The reason I am thinking about 9mm, is that it about one third the weight and size of 7.62. I do love the ballistics of 7.62, but I figure I will need to have several thousand rounds on hand if the zombie mass ever heads my way and 7.62 or even .223/5.56 nato may get too bulky.
Also, with the potential of hour, to days long fighting, a lower recoil round will save my shoulder. I dunno though, the .223/5.56 will shoot a lot farther. That could be very handy.

I love the FN five-seven for a side arm. The 20 round capacity and low recoil would great, but I suspect I would be better off with a more proven, 'bullet proof' shooter like a glock.

I think the 5.7x28mm is the best all around round. It's small, and very fast, but it can't be found in high supply. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.7x28mm

I hate the ugly look of a glock, but you can't argue with results. If you are ever bored sometime google "glock torture test" and check out what people have done to them.

They have been frozen in blocks of ice, buried in sand and mud, dropped out of airplanes and pulled behind pickup trucks and still continue to work great with only a simple field cleaning.

Pretty incredible.

I had never considered weight of ammunition to be a concern, having setup various bug out bags and even a dedicated bug out vehicle, as well as an impressive reloading arsenal, but weight is a very valid consideration.

Also as an after note, the bug out gear is more for a Shit Hits the Fan situation than a zombie attack, although I suppose a zombie attack could definitely be considered a Shit Hits the Fan situation.

If memory serves one of the parts of the Zombie Survival Guide is a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of shot guns vs rifles vs hand guns and the different ammos.

For whoever said they were unprepared, and for all unprepared for When There is No More Room in Hell, The Dead Will Walk The Earth...

It could be tonight, we never know. so, in advance, if They rise: You're Welcome.

From the Zombie Survival Guide Back Cover

TOP 10 LESSONS FOR SURVIVING A ZOMBIE ATTACK

1. Organize before they rise!
2. They feel no fear, why should you?
3. Use your head: cut off theirs.
4. Blades don't need reloading.
5. Ideal protection = tight clothes, short hair.
6. Get up the staircase, then destroy it.
7. Get out of the car, get onto the bike.
8. Keep moving, keep low, keep quiet, keep alert!
9. No place is safe, only safer.
10. The zombie may be gone, but the threat lives on.

I agree with the 9mm on the basis of cutting down on weight. If my pistol is 9mm then why carry a different caliber for my rifle? Standardization of parts has its advantages. It may not have the stopping power of the other rounds, but seriously are the zombies going to be in body armour or staggering around in street clothes?

The assault rifle I'd go with is the CX4 Storm:

I agree that a 9mm cartrige is the way to go. Using .45acp or a .223 is overkill. If you think about t a 9mm will go through a skull pretty easy, and if a zombie has been dead for a while the bone will be more brittle from dehydration.

I would go with a 9mm carbine of some sort as the primary weapon, the CX4 Storm from Beretta is a good choice, the barrel length will give you some accuracy at a distance. The only concern is that it used pistol mags, so you are looking at maybe 16-18 rounds. If you can find a semi-auto MP5 or an UZI you will be better off.

As far as side arm a Bushmaster or Ruger .22lr pistol would be my choice. At a few yards you can get a .22lr through a skull. You can carry a mess of .22lr rounds.

As you scavange any sporting goods store you should be abble to find a lot of 9mm and .22 ammo.

I gotta 2nd WWZ, great read and I found it interesting that Max Brooks is the son of Mel. The biggest thing i got from that book is that i dont want a gun i would prefer some sort of manual weapon that i could keep a fair distance from a zombie and be able to easily kill it. too much trouble searching for post apocalyptic ammo.

I wonder what a reliable distance is for .22lr and head shots. One other good thing about the .22 is that it is a lot easier to supress it's sound. I bet they are no good past 10 yards.

I'm happy we are all in agreeance on 9mm, this means a lot of people preparing will also make the same choice.

I found a pretty good looking bugoutbag. I'm going to start mine soon.

You are right, a .22 is very quite, almost just a pop, take a 7-8 inch barrel and drill some holes, you have a pretty quite weapon.. I would say you won't get skull penetration outside of 10 yards tops, thats why i would have it as my back up side arm. Truth is most people won't be able to hit a headshot from much more than 10 yards in a stressfull sittuation, no matter what the caliber.
I would also bring one of these

http://xs127.xs.to/xs127/08224/axe465.jpg (http://xs.to)

It gives you about 60 cm of reach, it is lite, but has a weighted hardened head that will go through a skull no problem.

If this were to go down tonight, I am woefully ill-prepared. The best I could round up on short notice would be

My Ruger GP-100. It can handle .357 and .38 ammo.
My titanium 2 wood. Light, good grip and really dense head for skull smashing
My Timberlands. You need a good, strong boot.
Claw hammer. Large screwdriver. Cordless drill.
My 4 cell Mag Light. For light and smashing.

I have on hand ready to go at any moment;

50 gallons fresh water,
dry goods for a month

Bug out Bag: (one of those big hockey bags)
Super bright led flashlight
Petzl (miner's light)
Magnesium flares
Bic lighters and a zippo with fluid
Waterproof matches
1 liter propane canister
Coleman mini camp stove
12 packets of instant oat meal
Pan and mess kit
Mossberg Maverick 88 c/w pistol grip, 2 boxes of 00 buck and 2 boxes of deer slugs
Crazy glue
rubber hose
Twine
60 meters of climbing rope
Small survival fishing kit
Batteries
Carabiners
2- 1 liter nalgene bottles
hand pump water purifier
Iodine tablets tablets
Massive first aid kit with assorted "drugs"
SOG trident pocket knife (the one with the seat belt cutter built in)
Grohman boot knife
5" switch blade
Small tool kit

Transportation:
1 lifted dodge 1500 4x4 with mud tires with a full slip tank of fuel in the back, tubed into my tank. Other items of interest include, large well stocked tool boxes, shovels, an ax, tire plugs and patches, binoculars and a police scanner. It also has a light bar for spotlighting. I also have provision to load up my Yamaha 450 wolverine or my Yamaha 660 raptor depending on how the mood strikes me. Slip tank has provision to pump fuel as well.

Arsenal:
Currently I can choose from
2-SKS rifles with t-5 combat stocks and bayonets
5-12 gauge shot guns in various configurations, including the remmington 870 with the knoxx special ops stock
1-ruger .204 - light weight tack driver
1-.17HMR - very good penetration and accuracy for lighter targets
2- ruger 10/22 - I agree a .22 makes a wonderful mess of a brain at close distance, the 25 round clips help too, I don't care how big you are, 25 rounds of HP .22 will slow you down.
1-.308 win with choate sniper stock and bipods, long range accuracy
1-.45-70 guide gun, it's short it's powerful, it will put a fist size hole in your chest, what more can I say.

I reload so you can be sure I have plenty of ammo kicking around.

I'm sure I am forgetting some things, the plan is if SHTF ever happens, I grab the BOB and throw it in the truck (along with the family of course) and leave town to a more remote, easily defendable area until it is safe to return. If that does not work or if a zombie hoard is too close to get away, taking the BOB to the roof of my house and taking pot shots at them until help arrives sounds like a good time too.

The only thing I need to change, is another BOB for the wife, and some provisions for the kids, like diapers.

Some people think I am a nut, but if SHTF I know I will be laughing in their faces, and not sharing my stuff.

if you start listening to metal you will get your adrenaline flowing for sure but quickly enough you will make a mistake and a pickaxe will be sticking out of a loved one/best friend/cop/military personnel members head. cool and calculated that is what one must be i would say Miles Davis' Bitches Brew would be a perfect choice

I'm enjoying J.L. Bourne's Day by Day Armageddon right now. Little more than halfway through - I'd say it's just as good as World War Z.

THANKS FOR THE RECOMMEND, I JUST FINISHED WWZ, AND HAVE BEEN WONDERING WHAT TO READ NEXT.

I just read 'Day by Day Armageddon' and 'Thunder and Ashes'. Both where pretty good. Day by Day is a very fast read about man vs. Zombie. Thunder and Ashes is more about man after the fact. Thunder and Ahshes reminded me of Jericho at points.

I'd say both were 4 outta 5.

Great topic!

The biggest problem I see with the ice axe is the possibility it will get stuck in a zombie head. That Halligan Pro Bar looks extremely sweet though.

I know how to fight zombies (I think every good Time Lord does :) ), but I will admit to being ill-prepared for it. The best thing to do is just leave the planet. :)

The good thing about the Halligan (Hooligan) bar is that it doubles for entry and lock removal. It will be very handy during looting.

I caught a great movie a couple of days ago that I heartily recommend: "Fido". It's a zombie movie, but it's really more of a dark comedy/satire than a horror movie. And it presents what I think is an interesting question in relation to the zombie wars: what if we could "domesticate" zombies?

OK, here's the setup: in the aftermath of a Zombie War that ravaged the world, people have retreated into very '50s-looking towns protected by fencing to keep out zombies. A company named Zombcon runs things. The company was founded by a man who made a discovery that changed things: he invented a collar that turns zombies placid and docile when it's placed around their necks. And, so, many people actually have zombies in their homes, in use as domestic servants. The movie revolves around one family, and the son Timmy, who forms a bond with his family's zombie, who he names Fido. And that's all you should know going in.

But here's the question: if we could find a way to make use of zombies, should we? I wouldn't mind yelling at my zombie "Get me a beer!" and watching it shamble into my kitchen. Or is this a foolish pipe dream, that should not deter us from our duty to put zombies back in their grave?

i feel like they could only be used for things like farming - get rid of those dumb animals that you have to feed, and replace with zombies. and, i highly doubt that you would get fined for beating a zombie to death. you could have four walk together to use plows and shit. i think it would be a good idea. we could make a really big treadmill the size of a football field, fill it with zombies, follow meat tied to a string BAM electricity!

I just got a chance to watch the Left 4 Dead preview videos above, and those are some fast moving zombies. since it is a first-person shooter game, I can virtually guarantee I will suck at it.

I wish they would create a Zombie survival game something like Civilization or something similar in that genre. Some battle action would be involved, but it is mainly about long-term survival after a zombie apocalypse.

I envision a game version of the comic book "The Living Dead."

also....if you try to sympathize with someone who is alive but bitten, your death will come with theirs. im not having someone potentially come back as a zombie and kill me.
