I doubt there will be. Besides a few opportunistic manipulators that the media likes to highlight, I think most people understand what happened in this case.
People who disagree will have demonstrations, the NYPD will try to learn from what happened and life will go on. That's exactly how I wish this world will be and I bet it's what will happen. Maybe it's just local pride, but I think NY has their shit together on these types of things.

yeah, i dont think this is really a race issue, which is why it wont become any kind of race riot thing....unless, of course the venerable Al Sharpton has his way.
Not a big fan of the Po Po, but at the same time, i wouldnt want them to hesitate to take action when they feel threatened out of fear that they will be convicted later on.

one of my best friends was a nyc undercover cop. he said he and his partner went to bars and clubs all the time. they were given xx amount of dollars to spend and blend in. he said they drank beer on the job while undercover to not look out of place. if anything went down they were suppose to do nothing and let outside handle it. from what i heard 1 or 2 of the cops that fired their gun were cops who were drinking in the bar undercover.
im sorry but they should protest, not agaisnt white or black cops but for the simple fact that shit like this happens all the time. the only way to be heard is to make sure you are heard. protest in front of the cops homes, in front of the precenct. but dont get violent, just scream at the top of your voice.
if this happened to my brother i would do everything i could to make sure i still had justice.

Bell, 23, was killed just before dawn on his wedding day, November 25, 2006. He and several friends were winding up an all-night bachelor party at the Kalua Club in Queens, a strip club that was under investigation by a NYPD undercover unit looking into complaints of guns, drugs and prostitution.

He means he wants to see a day when trails are tried because or evidence and not how many white people or black people are involved, a day when there are no Jessie Jacksons or AL Sharpton to stir up things every time there are white people on trial for doing something to a black person, and saying the black person was a victim and laying no blame on them. Like being at the bedside of drug dealers.. Or white people judging black people and automatically thinking they are guilty because they are black. Its just the evidence and the crime that should be judged
I am not fully fluent in Gvacian yet so i could be wrong

I know this may seem funny but I am seriously worried to see what happens in NYC in the next week. A case like this will put the city on edge. The last thing the NYPD needs is for people to not trust them again. I am not saying all cops are good and decent and hardworking officers (like our own CTC) and there are a few sour apples. I am not THAT naive.
But let's not forget what happened in LA with Rodney King. And King was beaten not shot. Yes I know it was more of a white cop on black victim crime with King. But even if there were black officers shooting this victim up it still puts the community (and might spill into the whole city) on alert.
And if there ever is rioting....CTC you be careful!
This shocks the hell out of me. I really thought one or two of those officers would be found guilty.
I am going to follow how the city reacts. If there is problems I am not going in this weekend. That's for damn sure.
And what the hell is an officer doing going into a bar and drinking while on duty? Undercover or not...you NEVER carry your firearm into a bar when you consume alcohol. I know two officers in NJ that got fired because they were drunk and showed they had a weapon on them.

They are undercover and supposed to blend in. They are told to order drinks and they are not sitting there getting shitfaced. They would probably look a little out of place being in a sketchy Jamaica Queens strip club at 2 AM without a drink. The guy who fired 31 bullets wasn't even in the club to begin with.

I really don't see this case paralleling the King case. That case had an amazing amount of heat, the video was shown at nauseam, not just locally but nationally. The Sean Bell case has not only not polarized the nation it really hasn't even polarized New York. No one has really talked about it while the trial was occurring. The Rodney King case showed video of white cops excessively tuning up a black man .
I honestly think cops on trial in the Sean Bell case have legitimate compassion for the his wife / family and will carry the burden / anguish with them for some time.
There will definitely be protests but I just don't think the passion people felt after the King case is there to turn this into a dangerous situation.

how do i prove it? my best friend was a cop in ny undercover narcotics. i never said he shoots people, my friend and his partner would be in the club trying to buy drugs so the officers outside would arrest them when they left. my friend would buy drinks for himself, partner and others so they looked like everyday guys hanging out at a club.
my point was, in this case there were undercover guys inside and they were drinking. from what i heard the inside undercover guys also fired their guns. meaning they werent suppose to get involved with the outside because it is uderstood the undercovers most likely are drinking so shit like this doesnt happen. not to mention that the undercovers want to keep it that way. if they are noticed as cops they are no longer undercovers
and when i i say shit like this happens all the time. i mean cops getting away with shit all the time.

The only thing he could be talking about is political and with in the media
I still don't understand. You need opposing sides to have a conflict.
In the Sean Bell case, you may not agree with either side, but they both make logical sense.
Side A: Cops were guilty of excessive force.
Side B: Cops acted properly.
Therefor it becomes a mainstream newstory because people disagree. The media is not calling for the cops to be jailed (except perhaps in op-ed articles or during talking head pieces), nor are they calling for the cops to be let off (except, again in op-ed articles or during talking head pieces). The OPPOSING VIEWS is what makes the story a high profile story.
Where is the conflict in the Officer Timoshenko tragedy? Is FoxNews going to have the pro-cop killer side argue against the anti-cop killer side?
And politically, if you kill a police officer isn't it already already grounds for the death penalty? What stiffer penalty could there be?

Are the criminals who shot him being sought atter, and if they are caught will they be bought to justice?
Do you want people to protest on the streets about criminals? I don't understand what you're trying to say here. I don't know what people would be protesting. Is there a large pro-cop killer movement in this country that people need to speak out against?
Its the media. The media covers these stories just for the sheer fact that they can draw out strong emotions from people. Today, you could almost feel there want for a riot.
Also why didn't Al Sharpton hold a march when Timoshenko was killed, asking young black men not to shoot cops? He would get alot more credibility if he did.
And yes there can be protests against criminals that terrorize communities.

how do i prove it? my best friend was a cop in ny undercover narcotics. i never said he shoots people, my friend and his partner would be in the club trying to buy drugs so the officers outside would arrest them when they left. my friend would buy drinks for himself, partner and others so they looked like everyday guys hanging out at a club.
my point was, in this case there were undercover guys inside and they were drinking. from what i heard the inside undercover guys also fired their guns. meaning they werent suppose to get involved with the outside because it is uderstood the undercovers most likely are drinking so shit like this doesnt happen. not to mention that the undercovers want to keep it that way. if they are noticed as cops they are no longer undercovers
and when i i say shit like this happens all the time. i mean cops getting away with shit all the time.
You said "im sorry but they should protest, not against white or black cops but for the simple fact that shit like this happens all the time."
In the context of this thread and your post shit like this happened everyday ,looks like drunken cops are shooting at people.

What I am saying is that they seem to have and agenda in that they only focus on the police when there is a horrible situation. And usually a situation where the officer is seen as the "violent aggressor".Also they only do this when there is a black victim. There are many occasions where a white person has been shot by cops and it is NEVER sensationalized to the point that it is with a black victim? Why is this? It seems like an agenda to me.They are race baiting and its bullshit, just be fair about it(the media). The news is supposed to be the news, not their take on the news.

I agree they do it to sell papers and the media does highlight black criminals but in a passive aggressive way. Whenever there is a crime and they dont mention the race you pretty much know that its a black perpetrator. I think this is b/c of the white guilt that members in the media have and they dont want to let their own racism leak out. Read local NY police blotters and you will see crimes that were committed by a 6'male who was wearing a gray sweater and blue jeans. What? That really helps me in identifying the perp.

One point I didn't see brought up here was how these guys selected a judge (1 Man) to oversee this case. If these Officers were completely in the right shouldn't they have to face the people they work for everyday, that being the tax payers? Shouldn't they be subject to the same proceedings as a poor minority kid? You know one man is easy to isolate, especially since the judges in the city have been sqwaking about pay raises lately.
I think there was no riots or disruptions because at this point the system has everyone so beaten down that you almost EXPECT bullshit like this too happen. For 30 years certain communities have been afraid of the cops, and this is a prime example of why. Its easy to say you don't see anything wrong with it when you may have been raised in the suburbs or more afluent neighborhoods. Thumbing your noses down at certain areas because they deserve it.
The mayor made a comment that was something like "Nobody won today". I think thats the truest thing said about the whole thing. These cops go home but have to live with it. Good Cops have to carry this cross into these communities now and get looked at with deeper resentment. The families are all destroyed. A young kids look at the adults pissed about it and learn to carry the torch for a new generation, wether its "Look how bad the cops are" or "Those guys got what they deserved". One day you might need a police officer. But with this attitude, I hope they're not around.
Who said anything about them being police officers? I'm talking about the 3 guys that gunned down an innocent man... What does it matter what their occupation was?
That's like if I said "OJ Simpson is a scumbag, I hope he burns in hell for what he did", and you replied with "For someone who likes football, that's an awfully mean thing to say."
I don't hate these guys for being cops. I would've said the same thing if they were lawyers, doctors, or shoe salesmen. Why the instant assumption that I'm connecting their shittiness to their professions? The fact that they were cops is irrelevant.

The way that the media, commissioner, mayor and others threw them under the bus before they saw the grand jury do you really think that they would have gotten a fair trial?
I for one am from the rat hole known as Ozone Park where last week cops popped a kid for turning on them with a .40 cal. Lucky for him they shot him in the ass. Then the cops had to take a breathalyzer exam after they had a gun pulled on them, way to build morale.I come from a bad neighborhood(and im 7 blocks from lovely East NY) and I still see it the same way.Yes there are def bad cops but I dont think its the problem in this case.

They didn't "select a judge." A jury trial is a right held by the defendant and can be waived. It's not a mandatory thing. If it's waived, you get a bench trial, but you don't "select" the judge handling the trial.
A poor minority kid could waive his right to a jury, and get a bench trial, as well, but in almost every case, it's not a smart idea. In order for a defendant to be proven guilty, the prosecution has to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. With a jury trial, the prosecution has to convince 12 people. With a bench trial, they only have to convince one.
It's a hell of a risk for the defense to take.
As for "isolating" one person, they could do that with a jury trial too. You need all twelve people to convict. If they "isolated" one person on a jury, they could get a mistrial, and in practical terms, off as well.

Here's something stupid I want to ask, and goddamn it, if I was a reporter, you'd be goddamn sure I'd ask this:
To Sean Bell's family, and to those who were injured in the shooting:
Would you rather see these cops off the streets and in jail and not see a single penny, or have them acquitted and get a nice big fat settlement from the city? Because it's OBVIOUS they are gonna get PAID PAID PAID. Even Sharpton will get paid from this because he'll get a consultant/reference fee from the families settlement.

A criminal conviction increases the likelihood of a settlement with the city. So, you're question doesn't really make any sense unless less you are asking the Bell Family " a hypothetical" would you rather have Justice or Money? I bet they'd rather have their son back.

it drives me crazy when people focus on the number of shots fired, its completely irrelevant. the main shots that need to be examined are the first and the last, and it doesnt really matter how many there are in between.
they could be guilty as sin if they only fired 5 shots, and the could be completely innocent even if they fired 100.
people forming their opinions on the case from just what they read in the media probably have less than half of the relevant facts needed to make an informed decision.

Maybe if you're talking five or six shots, yes,. But when one officer expties his clip and then reloads and empties another one, it can be considered too much.
And the cops on the scene didn't practice what they were taught. The police training aimed at preventing contagious, or "sympathetic," shooting frenzies is called mass reflective firing. Commissioner Ray Kelly explains: "We stress when officers go to the range that they fire no more than three rounds and then they look, they assess what the situation is, fire no more than three rounds at a time." Despite this training, Kelly concedes that while cops "try to guard against it," contagious shooting "is a phenomenon that does happen in policing. No question about it." Part of the reason may be a clichéd, but nevertheless powerful, tip passed on from one generation of cops to the next with much more frequency than "mass reflective firing training": "Better to be tried by 12 than carried by six."

A criminal conviction increases the likelihood of a settlement with the city. So, you're question doesn't really make any sense unless less you are asking the Bell Family " a hypothetical" would you rather have Justice or Money? I bet they'd rather have their son back.
Yeah, but the guys who got injured are gonna get paid. Everyone's gonna get paid. The city is gonna settle to make this go away. The cops in the Diallo shooting were acquitted as well, and Diallo's family still got three million.

...and if they'd been convicted the family would have gotten twice that...

Maybe if you're talking five or six shots, yes,. But when one officer expties his clip and then reloads and empties another one, it can be considered too much.
it doesnt matter if you are talking about 5 or 6 shots, or if the guy empties two clips, or if the guy runs back to the car 3 times to get more weapons and fires off 100+ rounds. all that matters is the context; depending on the situation 5 or 6 can be considered too much, and 100 can be considered reasonable.
i am specifically saying that i am annoyed by people who say 50 bullets absolutely = excessive, and dont bother to really learn anything about the circumstances of the incident.
on a completely seperate point, it is also annoying when people take what they have read in the media and try to act like they then have all the evidence they need to pass judgement on the police and/or the people shot in this case, that is why they have trials.
of course people are entitled to their opinions, but too often it seems people get carried away and dont allow for the possibility that they might need to see the trial record to form a truly informed opinion.
i have attended every day of 5 murder trials and was personally involved in two of them, i then followed each case closely thru the media when i got home at night. they consistently seem to do a terrible job accurately reporting what goes on in the courtroom.
i have no idea what really happened in this case, but it seems POSSIBLE to me that the cops thought they heard mention of a gun, that they identified themselves and were ignored, and that the driver then used the car in a menacing way that made the cops feel their lives were in danger.
it is also certainly POSSIBLE that they didnt follow procedure and one of them simply didnt like the way these guys were acting, that in effect one or more of them instigated the incident, and then once shots were fired that 2 of them went completely overboard with their use of their firearms.
but one thing is for sure, i wont be running around acting like i KNOW what happened and who is to blame until i have at least read the trial record. and even then if you didnt witness the trial you have no sense of how truthful each person sounded, and how plausible their testimony was in person, all of which is absolutely important for consideration.

what if each cop fired one full clip. then stopped and assessed the situation. then got run over by the car. is this what shouldve happened? maybe the extra clip was what kept all those cops alive that night.

Right, and the cops used to have 6 shot revolvers until(many years ago) a cop got into a gunfight and was outmatched and ran out of bullets. The perp then walked up to him and shot him in his head.

I'm not saying what the cops did was criminal. All I was saying is that at least one officer did not follow departmental protocol which is to stop after a certain number of shots to asses the situation. Is that so difficult to understand? From all reports, the car was not moving when it was being fired upon.

Sharpton vows to 'close this city' after officer acquittals (http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080426/D909P8SG0.html)
The city should shut down his National Action Network HQ for making and/or carrying out such threats. The city closes restaurants left and right for the flimsiest bullshit and yet this bozo threatens to disrupt the entire city and goes unpunished. This will cost the city millions in tax revenues and police overtime on top of screwing up everyone trying to earn a living. All because big Al is pissed off. When the MTA transit union did this last year, they were fined a million bucks per day. Why not do the same to the NAW? All the same arguments apply. They will be marching without a permit, the NAW leadership should be arrested on the spot.
Hope your Grandpa doesn't live near the protest zone and need an ambulance that day. He's a dead man. Thank Big Al at the funeral.

The city went after Roger personally and fined him out of his own pocket for spearheading the illegal TWU strike. Why not do the same to Al? I know he's not worth anything, but maybe you could seize the NAW headquarters and shut them down.
The notion that in a city of 8 million people, all of whom have a long list of gripes with the city over one matter or another, that any one group gets to shut the city down for their issue is a joke. It's also 1,000% counterproductive. It only serves to turn most of the city against his cause.
Arrest Al now. Save him from himself.

The MTA is a city funded organization that is suppose to serve the people, too shut it down to the very people who pay for it was a crime. Roger was a publicity hound who wanted his face on the 6 O'Clock news, and was dealt with accordingly. BTW, The TWU paid those fines on a monthly note (I work at a TWU railroad so I am SURE of it) not a lump sum. Also a lot of members showed there dislike of the strike by not paying there dues for several months after it, again leaving the TWU short of money for there monthly note.
Anyway, I can't stand Sharpton at all but at least he isn't calling for out right riots where people and cops get hurt and killed. Yeah he's an opportunist but at least this didn't turn into downtown LA. You gotta at least see it like that. Arresting Sharpton is a bigger waste of tax dollars, his high priced lawyers will have him out before you can count to 10. NYPD officers love easy OT, at least the aren't in riot gear beating off 10,000 angry people.

BTW-Did anyone follow this case closely? I didn't, but I heard a news report on WNYC that Sean Bell's family doctor testified that he was legally blind in one eye, and was surprised he was able to get a driver's license in the first place.
When I heard that, it was pretty clear to me what happened and I had no doubt the police officers would (and should) be acquitted. It was dark, he had a few drinks in him and he was half blind to begin with. Plus he just got into an argument with someone at the bar, for all he knew he was being ambushed by the guys he got into the argument with. Its a case where the officers could have had their badges in clear view and it wouldn't have made any difference.

You did.

Wow, that post isn't laden with hyperbole....I hope!?
Come on Z, I'm not defending every action here but have you ever been in the middle of a tense situation like this? It doesn't make them above the law, but when bullets fly in a tough situation sometimes things go wrong. I feel for the families, but it wasn't like they just listened when given orders. Now I know the claim of not knowing, but there are plenty of factors here that cloud their complete innocence.
Also, as stated on O and A, taking these boys down would set some terrible standards for the police force. As I stated before, I really don't know this case top to bottom so I'll refrain from making clear cut assumptions/judgements. However, I can see the issues with both sides.
And I bet Dr. Z isn't even an MD.....with talk like this I'm sure he's a dirty DO!

I dont know since it started the whole city is calling for "peaceful protest". They are lobbying for law changes and calling for people to use there heads this time. So if one march goes down without a permit and everyone is arrested (and released 2 hours later) is that a shut down of the city? It just seems like some people WANT to see a riot so they can say there goes Sharpton starting a riot again.
