OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida school board member is drawing fire from some parents for saying they should spend money on school clothes for their children instead of buying alcohol and cigarettes.
…"Everyone can afford Wal-Mart and if they can’t, they need to think about turning off their cable TV or stop buying alcohol or cigarettes and spend their money on their children," he wrote.

thats a Florida educator, for you. Not the brightest. Most of the school districts that I know of in Florida, suck. The colleges are great, but the public system is not.

I didn't read the article, but I don't see the problem with the quote. Smokes are what, 5 dollars a pack? That's 35 bucks a week for a one-pack habit, over 100 a month.

I don't have children just so that I may indulge in alcohol and cigarettes.

Sounds like he's the one actually doing the thinking.

I guess he's an "elitist."

Put your children's needs above non-necessities? Scandalous! He should be drawn and quartered.

not the most tactful comment, but he is probably right regarding most of the people complaining.

the problem is that for people who are honestly struggling to get by and arent wasting their money the comment becomes very insulting.

although they should know enough to realize if the shoe doesnt fit then it is not directed at them. but people love to be insulted and offended as we well know. ;)

I think what he was trying to say was that he hates Jews.

But unfortunately, it didn't come off that way.

But without cable and booze you would have hire a babysitter and buy books to read them at bedtime.
