I think one of the biggest culprits in this was Bill Clinton, actually. He came out of that DLC bullshit that Democrats should win by sounding like slightly nicer Republicans. He was actually right of center, if anything, and almost completely collapsed the distinction between the Democratic and Republican parties on major issues.
