Burning out is about showing up blowing it all out and that's the end of you.
Fading away is about longevity and spreading it out long term.
Think Jim Morrison vs. Steven Tyler. Jim did a couple albums, died young and became an icon. Steven Tyler has been putting out albums 30-40 years with Aerosmith and continue to churn out material until they decide to slowly and finally stop.

My preferance is completely different between lit, movies and music.
For music I'd rather a band burn out. I'm way more excited by the new project of a guy in a band I love than the 6th album by a band I love.
But a long, quality career in lit and film seems to take so much more discipline. I think you have the opportunity to speak in alot of different voices, unlike musicians who people want a common sound from. The energy behind books and movies is so much slower, and the result so much less immediate, it makes the evolution alot more fulfilling for me. I hate that a decent crop of young film makers seem to want to declare themselves autuers so early on.

I'd prefer the surprise me.
Ya know... when someone's reading the paper years from now,
and they read that I died. And say, "wow, I thought he died a long time ago."

"wow, I thought he died a long time ago."
We passed upon the stair
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as a surprise
I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone
A long long time ago
Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With The Man Who Sold The World
I laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for form and land
For years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazeless stare
At all the millions here
I must have died alone
A long, long time ago
Who knows?
Not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the Man who Sold the World

I'm with Chris. Surprise me.
I'd like a pair of .22s to the back of the head putting my lights out when I least expect it.
Heart Attacks frighten me, and I've seen cancer patients die. Not pretty. And those are the two main killers of my family on the male side.
The girls in my family? They get to look forward to a few years of cup-drooling after the inevitable stroke.

Well, you just told us it was a trick so you aren't off to a very good start.
If you're going to make a real attempt at pulling this off
then you need to edit that post, stat.
