Well today was the day I was dreading but I had to do it. My dog who's health has gotten worse during the last 2 months was a 12 year old Doberman got worse and worse over the past few days. I know losing a pet is not like losing a relative but pets are a part of the family. It wouldnt have been fair to let her suffer, hoping that she would make a turnaround. Im gonna miss her but I feel I did the right thing. I couldnt let her suffer any more
Sorry to hear that, brother. And believe me when I say I can relate. Through the course of my life I've had to put 3 dogs and one cat down and it's a killer every time.
They really do become part of the family, and you miss them terribly when they're gone.
There's nothing like being a pet owner, though.

It's a tough decision to make but, you did what had to be done. At least she's no longer in pain.
Sorry buddy.

Yeah, I think most of us have had pets at one time or another,
and those who have can definitely relate.
Sorry budday. But there's a reason they do this, to end the pain. Take comfort in that.
I look at my cat when I read posts like this, and as much as I like to joke about how I cant wait for her to die... I'm not serious at all. I will miss her a ton (no she's not fat!)

Sorry buddy. You did what had to be done, but it still very hard to do. I have had dogs put down and in other cases tried to let them live as long as possible, and there's really no good options at a certain point. The hardest part is that they are so playful and so dependent on you its almost like losing a child. And they are such a part of your daily life that you notice constantly that they aren't there anymore. I'd find myself calling for a dog out of habit and then catching myself, knowing he/she isn't there anymore.
Peace, bro.

Tough One Budday. Everyone In Our Neighborhood Calls Our Dog "The Mayor OF The Neighborhood" He Greets Everyone With A SMile And A Lick. He's 10 now, And I Do Not Look Foward To That Day.

But I know she had a good life, and it's nice that you could be with her when it was time.
Condolences to you on the loss of your friend.

I think its sadder when you see people who can't let go and the animal looks like its obviously in pain.
You did the right thing .....

You did the right thing for sure.
I'm really hoping my 14 year old shepard mix just doesn't wake up one morning. I'll do it if I have to, but I don't wanna.

that is true and it makes me wonder why we often drag humans on so long in fatal situations? i hated putting my german shephard down in 1992 but being in there with her as the shot was given was good. she just fell asleep and stopped breathing. very calm and peaceful way to end i thought.
sorry for your loss budday :(

Really sorry to hear about your dog. I had to do the same thing to my 15 year old lab mix a few years ago and it was absolutely horrible.
The lab mix we have now, Ralph, is almost totally blind at about 8 years old. We talked about putting him down last year when he first started going blind but got a Lab pup, Belle, last November and she has really helped Ralph a lot. He is very playful with her and seems generally happy for the most part.
Kind of weird, the wife and I were just talking about what we would do if Ralph hurt himself while one of us were out walking the two of them. He sometimes falls off obstacles or runs into things. We are actually making a plan on how to put him down if he injured himself and couldn't get him to the vet.
We were both just crying on the thought of doing that just a short while ago, but it's something we need to consider so if he gets injured, the suffering would be minimal.

I was sitting on my couch with my dog, a 9 year old cockapoo named Max, and I was thinking about him getting older. He is really helthy, but knowing he doesnt have much longer really bummed me out. Losing a dog is like losing the one person who always listens, doesn't judge, and always seems to know just what to do to put a smile on your face.
But you did what had to be done. God bless sir,and I do believe that all dogs go to heaven.

I just got done watching a documentary on Barbaro. Even though he was a horse in which he was breeded for racing which caught national attention, he was still an animal that was loved and cared for by his owners, handlers, trainers and Jockey and the fact that he had to be put down really hit home with me.
If there is a heaven I know that each of our pets who have passed on have a nice area of grass where they can run without any pain
Dude that really sucks. I had to put my 12 year-old friend Buddy down a couple of year's ago and I still miss him. I know it sounds wierd, but he changed my life and allowed me to love. Here's a picture of him shortly before he went.

Can you post a picture of yours?
I know I am a dork for writing this, but as the movie said: "All Dogs go to Heaven" so Godspeed what's her name?

We had my dog Puddles put down 5 years ago and its still tough thinking about it. I grew up with this dog and she outlived the rest of my pets. But she grew too old and hurt herself too badly to walk.
Now several years later we adopted two spunky young dogs-- a Bluetick Coonhound/Australian Shepard (Vicky) and an Black Lab/Australian Cattle Dog (Norman) and they make me wonder why I never got another dog again sooner (despite all the trouble they cause). I am not saying that you should go out and get another dog right now, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel brother

I'm so sorry for your loss WF. Many people just don't understand that pets have their own personalities and do indeed become part of the family.
My cats Otis. Alice, and Lloyd are [about] 11, 10, and 8, respectively. They are all healthy but I KNOW I'm going to be a wreck when it comes time for them to go. I've noticed that Otis has lost his "playful" side and chooses to forgo fetching the toy mouse if it lands more than 3 feet from where he is. He's still adorable and all, but he's become an old man.
My dad worked for the ASPCA so he was the one who'd take care of things when it was time to put a pet down. The one and only time I ever saw tears in his eyes was when he put down our German Shepherd Kelly.
Godspeed WF.

WF I am sorry to hear about your loss. I know all too well how difficult it is to lose such a loving member of the family. Just cherish those memories. I know I do with my now passed pups.
Hope you feel better soon.

my mom found this years ago... after we had to put our first kitty down.
pets ARE family.
it comforts me to know that she had feline friends to meet her at Rainbow Bridge when she died.
i hope this brings you some peace...
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

No one can fault anyone else who had owned a dog or cat and had to put them down for feeling what your feeling. They are certainly a part of your family and the grief is real. My sister had to per dog down 2 months ago and she was absolutely devastated. But she went and got another puppy soon after and she seems much happier now, so getting a puppy might be the balm for grief, give it a shot!
