View Full Version : Why is getting an appt with a gynecologist like getting into Studio 54?

After 3 years I FINALLY have benefits again. In the last two weeks of having medical coverage, I've gone to my dentist and my PCP. But getting an appointment with a gynecologist within a month of calling is near impossible! And I have a very specific on-going issue that needs to be addressed and I still can't get a better appt than June? WTF? And I was lucky to get the June appt because someone canceled. Otherwise I'd have to wait until July.
Why? I called the majority of gynecologists in JC, Hoboken, and Bayonne that are in my plan and June was the best I could do.
I don't get it.
And remember what forum you're in.

Well they are specialists and most apecialists are usually booked for awhile. I was on crutches for a month before I could get in to see an orthopedist and they knew my knee was broken.
Also when I first read this I saw appt as apartment not appointment (side note sometimes I become illiterate at a moments notice).

It might have something to do with their insurance (not your's). Though gyno's are in need, most of them were also trained in the "ob" part. Lawsuits against obstetricians have spiraled out of control in the last 10 years or so. I know about some very competent obgyn's that have retired, because they can't afford their medical malpractice insurance, due to lawsuits.
There are bad doctors, but greedy lawyers are more damaging in the long run.

If you said it was for a check up, they probably fit you in the next available new patient check up appt. If you said you were pregers or had a UTI they would of seen you much sooner I am sure of it.

I have no idea, but my gynecologist only works days, no weekends, so it's been difficult trying to schedule a check up this year, otherwise she's very good and it's convienent because she works from my regular doctors office.

At least you are able to call and book your own appt. here for the first visit you need a referral from your PCP (which here in this city is anyone you have seen more then twice) because if you just go to the walkin they won't refer you. The problem is getting to see your so called "family doctor".

This is true.
Actually, my problem is worse than a UTI. Basically, I've been constantly bleeding since April 2005. That's THREE YEARS of constantly having my period (with a few breaks in between). I did the best I could do without insurance and since it wasn't cancer I was told to deal with it until I got coverage. You'd think this might push me up the list but it didn't.

Not necessarily. I had to wait over a month for my first prenatal appointment.
Your physical problem sounds similar to one I had for a few years, Alice. I was being bounced from doctor to doctor because nobody "wanted to deal with it." It ended up being "cured" by something as simple as being on a new form of birth control (NuvaRing, in my case).

"you've been living with this for three years, another month is not going to make a difference" - the doctor sitting across the table from me.
you'll be in soon enough. hope they can figure it all out & make it better for you. but i would try other doctors if you could.

I usually get an appointment with a nurse practitioner cuz it's easier...and then if you really have something important going on well for some reason the doctor is suddenly available....magic!

When I found out I was pregnant via home test (back in 2006) all the ob/gyn places I called said they had no open appointments for over 2 months! I couldn't believe it! Here I was a 40 year-old first time pregnant woman and I would have to go 2 months with no guidance on what to do/not to do while being pregnant at the most vital development time!
Glad you finally have insurance Fuzzy, and are getting checked out. Hope it's nothing serious!!

Exactly. What's another month? I'm just venting. I'm just tired of having to go into the ladies room every half hour at work or trying to "discretely" take a tampon out of my bag (I finally "discovered" OB tampons! So easy to keep in your pockets.) I want to buy nice underwear again! I don't want to worry that a sneeze will lead to an embarrassing situation! I'd love my iron levels to be normal again. And I don't want to spend so much money on goddamn tampons and pads anymore! That shit costs a BUNDLE!
AND I'd like to be able to have sex again and not feel awful all the time.
I'm just surprised that I had to be "fit in" at The New Margaret Hague WOMEN'S HEALTH INSTITUTE.

Oh man,
When my OB dropped me out of nowhere and went into hiding...
I was scrambling in my 6th month to find an ob that was reputable and took my insurance.
Everywhere I called told me either: "NO NEW PATIENTS" or "WE DON'T TAKE LATE TERM PREGNANCIES!"
So fucking confusing.
I finally had to call my mother in law to call her golf buddies and find me someone.
Which worked.
But you are right... I had never felt as helpless as the days I couldn't get someone to look in my vag.

On the bright side, at least you're not pregnant.
I'm so glad you finally got the benefits. After you go to the gynecologist, you should schedule a full physical for yourself. I was reluctant to do so myself but hey, we're not getting any younger.

Today I went to Target and spent $100 on necessities (cat fud and litter, some grocery items, took advantage of a sale on "green" lightbulbs, etc). 25% of my bill was on tampons and pads. I am ticking off the days until June 27.
I'm all for a hysterectomy. I know that's radical, but I'd be for it if there was no other choice!
Wait-- does a hysterectomy affect your ability to orgasm? Hmmm. I may re-think this.

Two of the hottest sexual relationships I've ever had, were with women who had hysterectomies.
