I've heard Ron beat Jimmy Buffet up more than once and thought I'd see what the rest of you think. I'm no parrot head but I don't hate the guy either. In fact, I went to my first show of his last October in Vegas. It's basically bubble gum music but the atmosphere was great and it was good show. I think I like that he genuinely seems to love what he's doing. I understand that's his gimmick but it's a good bit and he plays it well. Has anyone else ever been to one of his shows or would you go?

I'm a native Floridian and hate Jimmy Buffet. He's a horse's-ass, his rabid fans are even worse and I wish he would end playing already. The songs suck, are corny as hell and the notion that this mediocre at best drivel passes for greatness, sickens me.

Hitler definitely genuinely loved what he was doing.

That's right...Jimmy Buffet is a Nazi rapist.

He is a rapist with Nazi beliefs AND he rapes Nazis.

Never been to a show but I would go once just to see the spectacle of it all. The music's fluff, although I will admit to getting a little misty when I listen to "He went to Paris" and I honestly like "Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants".

Read his one book, "A Pirate Looks at Forty" and thought it was OK.

I think the real problem is his pretense that he's just a laid back beach bum when in fact he's a litigious multi-millionaire.

Great artist? Not by a long-shot but on a hot summer's day down at the shore, mixed in with some Marley, Tosh, a little Beach Boys, a couple of cold ones and sweet young things in bikini's -- nothing's better.

Except raping a Nazi.

I would go for the experience but i have to say, i've listened to lots of buffet, and even watched some live concerts and i really dont get it. sure there's a handful of songs i can get into, or even actually enjoy, but most of the time i hear him and his cheesy backup singers, it just annoys and irritates me. Most of it is just cheesy and so simplistic i feel like im supposed to lie down on my nursery school mat.

People say they go for the party-- for the lifestyle aspect of it. I get that. I've done that before. But its a REALLY expensive party. And while i can totally understand the fun of a 'chill' atmosphere...there's something about the parrothead thing that just hits me as well, dorky and not in a fun dorky way.

I'd love to check out a show though, with an open mind, and see if im wrong. I mean.....thousands and thousands of people (including some close friends) can't be wrong right? But no way im paying the hundreds of dolllars people typically pay for tix.

I wouldn't buy tickets, but I would go if I won or was given a pair. Jimmy Buffet has some good kick back, drink, and relax music - mainly if you are having a mellow, summertime, cookout, get drunk, good time. It's good background music.

I'm a former Jimmy Buffett fan who has seen the light. I went to a few shows, mostly to hit on drunken sorority girls and then to placate girlfriends who were fans of that nonsense. There may be one or two songs that I can still stomach but for the most part the whole "Parrothead" lifestyle usually is made up of drunken slags and date-rapists.

On a similar note, I have actually discovered the music that they play in Hell on an endless loop. While listening to XM Kids with my children I was subjected to "The Parakeets"; a group of soul-less, tone-deaf children who sing sanitized (yes, all references to drinking for example are changed - i.e. beer for root beer) versions of Jimmy Buffett songs.

It is horrible.

I went to one Jimmy Buffett concert and that's all it took.  It was something akin to the bar scene at St. Patrick's day or New Years Eve.  A bunch of assholes that think that think getting obnoxiously piss drunk and acting like an asshole is the definition of havin a good time.  The majority of people that I witnessed seemed to be a bunch of self important "me first" corporate jack offs that would not know good music if it bit them in the ass.  I went with a group that all rode in a large van/mini bus.  This of course was a permission slip to get incredibly wasted to the point of vomiting.  There is nothing more unattractive than a middle aged soccer mom wacked out of her skull and pissing herself.  There were two in my "group" that fit this description.  This was a "company" trip that we sponsored when I worked for a distributor that sold Corona.  I was never more embarrased to be with a group of people in my life.  I could not wait for the roadtrip from hell to finish that night.  The one highlight was when one of the 40 something greybeards that was acting like an asshole, had his grass skirt lit on fire.  He looked like Gilligan running for the lagoon.  I laughed and laughed.  Served the dickface right.  Ever since then I cringe when ever Jimmy's dumbfuck lemmings gather for his summer concert stop here at the Nissan Pavillion. (very close to my house)  In Mr. Buffett's defense though, it is not his fault that his fan base are a bunch of inbred asswhistles.  Man's gotta eat.  Wow I did not realize the pent up disdain I had for the "Parrotheads" until I started typing.  Parrotheads, how appropriate.  Just Parroting what is fed to them, not an original thought in the group.  Fucktards....I feel better.

I found this in another thread. I knew I had felt this way before when this question has been posed.

I've actually been to about 6 shows but tailgated at about 14. I don't own a single Buffett album, the tailgating was the reason to go. The atmosphere is fun and laid back. I haven't been to one since I was about 22, but I would always go and tailgate and if I could get a ticket off of a scalper for cheap I would go in. Otherwise, I'd leave when the show started.

The parking lot is fun, just a bunch of friendly drunks. Half of the crowd are drunk college kids, the other half are drunk "adults". I.e. people that don't usually drink that much because of kids/jobs/etc, but find a Buffett show as a good excuse to wear a hawaiian shirt and tie one on. It's way more fun than your typical concert tailgate. Most people get there way early and barbecue and set up their spots and play drinking games. All in all, it's an excuse to drink a lot. Whether you like that or not.

I seem to be in minority here, but I can't say I have ever had a bad time at the tailgates.

Buffet is a hack and always has been. What’s the difference between Jimmy and Rupert Home’s – Nothing, they are both a couple of pina colada sucking bullshit artist. I was born in Florida and had to suffer through years of that ass-wipe playing on the radio every fucking day. When Buffet came to town three times a year all the Dick-heads, oh I mean Parot-heads would act like it had been years since his last gig, it’s almost too painful to remember. :wallbash:

He's ok and his early stuff is good. As you know from his book he also is not a dope. So he cashed in on the Parrot head thing a little too much, those seaplanes don't come cheap. I saw him at the old Tampa stadium with another of Ron's favorites, the Eagles. Good show as I remember...

I love R & F and think that Ron has some great insights into life etc. on top of being a funny guy, but he does have a hardon for some 70s music that I think was good at the time and for most part still is. As Ron might say it does not make him a bad person.

PS Hope Fez is getting some help and is feeling better.

He's not so bad as such things go, but his fanbase is such a pack of douchebags that I can't listen to him in good conscience.

The Jimmy Buffet fanbase is full of douchebag professionals who think that going to a Buffet show occasionally and getting shitfaced drunk while wearing a Hawaiian shirt doesn't mean that they're that yuppie piece of shit they swore they'd never become. It's for people who have sold out, but don't want to necessarily believe they have. It's for people who work full time to ass-rape the working class, but don't want to think that makes them a bad person. It's for people who kiss ass of upper management constantly, but want to think there's some little spark of humanity left in them.

Jack Johnson was one of the coolest motherfuckers who ever walked the planet.

He didn't give a fuck what anyone thought. It's not even 1920 yet, and about all a black man is supposed to do is pick up after white people, and call them "Sir" and "M'amm", and he's driving around in a fine car, smoking fine cigars, white chicks on either arm. He fucking ruled.

You should also seek out a soundtrack album Miles Davis did for a documentary on him. It's probably Miles' most successful fusion of rock and jazz. It invents whole new ways to kick ass.

I really am not a fan of the music, but my wife loves him for some reason. I have gone with her to the past few shows in Cincinnati since we were able to get tickets before the scalpers.

The crowd sucks for the most part. Just because you are balding and wear a coconut bra does not make you relaxed. The fans like to pretend that they love everyone and that they all hang out together, but every time I have gone to a show it has been near impossible to start a conversation with anyone. The older crowd looks down on the kids, and the kids are all too drunk to stand, let alone talk to anyone.

While his original songs are crap, he does an excellent job with covers. When he plays Once in a Lifetime, In My Room, Midnight Rider, or Scarlet Begonias it helps to make up for the crap.

Listen for money references in his songs or "material" references.

I had no idea who his father was unitl relatively recently (I now have car insurance through one of his companies) and had picked up the 2 disc best of set released about 6 years ago and there's a picture of him with like 18 hula girls about to blow him and then another with him on this obviously pricey looking sea plane and I'm thinking - this guy's not that fucking good ... then I found out where he comes from.

e.g. there's a rant in the middle of one of his songs about how much prices have gone up at movie concession stands

he's the "son of a sailor" and is glad "he don't live in a trailer"

"made enough $ to buy Miami but I pissed it away so fast" Pirate looks at forty

He discusses how much it costs to make an album these days before starting in on a studio rerecording of one of his songs.

those are just a few and admittedly just off that compiliation - which btw are there any other artists with more "best of's" out there?

That said, there's a time and a place for the man and I have to say, my wife and I were getting set for a sunset sail in Mexico a few years ago and that guy's perfect to listen to with warm breeze coming in off the bay and everyone's feeling good. I'd go see him but not if it meant that I'd have to miss say a live Ron and Fez. Best of? maybe I'd get tickets.

thanks, I'm retracing where I originally got the info that Warren was his father - it leads back to a horse's ass (though I am a bigger horse's ass for listening to him)

so there are the money references throughout his work anyway... and I guess he's a big enough star to make a lot of it and get laid.

As for Jimmy Buffet, how can anyone look at this video and still call himself/herself a JB fan:

Jimmy Buffett Doesn't Live In Key West Anymore

This song is for all the people thats been reviewing our records, in different magazines and things, and mentioning the fact that we sound a lot like Jimmy Buffett, because we live in Key West and we use conga drums in our songs. And for all those people that are under the misconception that Mr. Buffett lives in Key West, we'd like to say that theres a lot of things in Key West. As a matter of fact:

Theres sailboats,
and conch shells,
and palm trees galore,
but Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.
Sisters Spare Change has a bumper sticker on the door,
it says "Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore."

They smuggled all them Pirate songs,
snitching on the sly,
bringing heat,
where its already too damn hot to die.
Son of a son of a son of a bitch,
is whats all that bullshit's for.
Jimmy Buffett he don't live in Key West anymore.

Sailing to the Caribean,
Jimmy might well be.
Pictures up in Rolling Stone,
for all the world to see.
The rich keep getting richer,
the poor will just be poor.
But Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.

Now Jimmy's moved to Malibu,
with all those other stars.
He's not down on Duval Street,
hanging out in bars.
All them goddamn tourists,
got to be a bore.
But Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.

So don't tell me I sound like Jimmy Buffett,
just because I've got that island beat.
Jimmy might have grown up on the ocean,
me I kind of grown up on the streets.
Music's just a way of life,
to me I'm living free.
So don't play all that Key West Jimmy Buffett shit on me.

Now divers do it deeper,
must of really made them mad.
Some of them reviewers said,
it really sounded bad.
Well, they liked Margaritaville.
Me, I liked it too.
Someday, Jimmy,
why dont we just both get drunk and screw?

Them creepy motherfuckers,
that think music is a whore,
tell 'em that you just don't live in Key West anymore.

Theres sailboats,
and conch shells,
and palm trees galore.
But Jimmy Buffett, he don't live in Key West anymore.
Sisters Spare Change has a bumper sticker on the door,
Jimmy Buffett, he don't live in Key West anymore.

Alright boys, sound like Jimmy Buffett now!

David Allan Coe is the shit...I saw him in concert about 6 years ago...most politically incorrect concert I have ever seen. It's a shame that a lot of people don't know that he wrote a lot of the legendary country songs...I guess he wasn't the face that country music wanted.

honestly, i could have enjoyed it more if it wasnt for him needing to remind us of poor people. just awful.
