“Sarro's Balloon” (http://www.radioghost.com/uploads/AMV32.mp3) the 32nd installment of Atoms, Motion & the Void is available for download at:

http://www.radioghost.com/uploads/AMV32.mp3

"In which a bout of insomnia leads Sherwin to a late night voyage up, up, and away.”

Music By: Corinna Repp (http://www.myspace.com/corrinarepp), Biosphere (http://www.biosphere.no/), Bing Crosby, Joanna Newsom (http://www.joanna-newsom.com/), Radiohead (http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace/), Samamidon (http://www.samamidon.com/), Breathe Owl Breathe (http://www.breatheowlbreathe.com/) & Max Richter (http://www.maxrichter.com/).

Thanks everyone for listening last night! And thanks to Ron & Fez for letting a story-style show fall into a slot. I know it's not everyone's proverbial cuppa t.

I went out for a long walk while it played. It was kind of stormy. No balloons though for me. :)

Sorry to Badinia for the use of Joanna Newsom. I wanted to use a Bjork song in that spot, but couldn't find one that worked for me there. So I used old "Princess Lemongrass" (that's what we call JN up here).

I've heard of him, but haven't heard him.

But a lot of people have asked me that...also the other old timey storyteller guys...like Jean Shepherd...I know him only from Christmas Story...

thanks buddy... :) (and ty to TJ and chig too)

Incredible story, Mr. Sleeves. I had a loss in my family myself lately, so the theme of wanting to have some sort of communication with someone gone hit very home with me.

And as for Joanna Newsom: the two minute (or so) clip in the show was fine, and evocative, and worked well. But when you listen to the CD and that goes on for twelve minutes, it does get a bit tiresome.

Shepherd was very different. While he did create that whole nostalgic Parker family world of A Christmas Story and used it quite a bit in his writings, radio shows and films, he was really a multi-faceted performer. He would very often talk about current events, politics etc on his radio show... He would go on trips overseas or to South America and he'd come back and do two or three shows on the people and the culture of the place he'd gone to. The stories he told were amazing. He wrote hilarious essays for Playboy and was one of the pioneer writers of The Village Voice. Some of his funniest stories were about his time in the military (probably embellished for the most part, but absolutely hilarious!). Sadly, because of the popularity of the movie, people look at him today as just a folksy, Garrison Keillor type of story teller but he was a much more rounded performer than that. He was also a great stand-up in his day and did Broadway in the early 60's. He really got saddled with the one trick pony persona because of that movie (which probably earned him more money than anything he ever did).

Outstanding job, as always, sir. I thought the music was especially powerful in this one. I have become quite a fan of Sam Amidon through your recent use of him. His rendition of O Death in Happenstance/Drillwork was amazing. Thank you.

saw this thread updated this morning, coincidence i listened to "sarro's balloon" again last tuesday and "abandoned barn" last night. absolutely beautiful.
i did make the mistake of listening to "the exponent of westbrook-part 1" and then immediately, "the exponent of wesbrook-part 2" immediately after, without realizing that there is an important plot that unfolds in between. i can't wait to get home and fill that in.

Listen to ‘em in order. Atoms Motion & the Void will warp your brain a little (in a good way). I know it did for me, and don’t even get me started about Tall James!... but listening to them out of order… whhoo, there might be no coming back from that one.

now if we just had a new one to listen to... you know, just sayin'

Ew.

You took something nice and you had to twist it, and put lotion on it.

Me and Pat were just having a little night cap. So what if I tucked him in? So what if he needed a hand?

It's nice. That's all. Pals and things.
