this weekend was my son's 3rd b-day party. we did the bbq in the park thing, with about 40 people. bought lots of burgers, rolls, dogs, cheese, etc. Actually bought too much on the rolls and cheese (and potato salad). normally, we'd just throw the extra's in the freezer, and save them for a rainy day. but with lots of other foods, fridge (and freezer space) was at a premium.
so, we went back to costco to return the items. they were kept properly cooled. no problem returning them, we got our money back, and as we were walking away, the lady just dumped all of it in the garbage.
i never like wasting food. i feel really bad that this was all dumped for a lousy $22 back in my pocket. it was a bag each of burger / hot dog rools, a 5 pound tub of 'tater salad, and a bag of cheese slices.
am i wrong for returning them?

You're not wrong since you didn't know what they were going to do with them. I wouldn't have assumed it, but I guess it makes sense from a liability standpoint on thier end. Now that you know their policy, you can figure out another option next time this happens ... even feeding the ducks with the bread is a better option than throwing it out. But since you didn't know, there should be no weight on your shoulders sir.

You are not wrong at all because you did not know what they were going to do with the food. Now you know, so you can do something different with the food next time.
You are not guilty of anything.

First of all, do not feed the ducks (or any other wild animals) bread or any other foodstuffs (except for bird feeders).

Second, you did nothing wrong since you did not know that they were going to throw it all away though I too would feel guilty if I were in your shoes. In the future, try to find a local food bank in your area that you can donate the unused food to (though even the food banks are getting picky with all the crap that's being recalled).

I'm like you Mike. I hate wasting food. There's almost always someone who will take it and enjoy it. I once took 3 bags of rolls home from someone who was going to get rid of them. I found places for most of them. There's lots of people who freeze food for later.
I think it was the person's fault who threw the stuff away. If it's policy to give you your money back but then throw the shit away, I personally would have told you that and said "Hey, you get your money back but due to our policies it's just gonna get thrown out anyway, you want to take it back?"
Wasting food is just wrong.
