I was in college during the magical time when MP3s became popular but good MP3 players hadn't come out (you remember the days when the hottest MP3 player on the market was the Diamond Rio or Creative Nomad II with a whopping 64mb of memory or the ill fated portable MP3 CD Player ???) so I used to make mix CD's alot for the car.
I made a few volumes of what I liked to call "Songs with Kick Ass Guitar Solos".
Among the songs I had on them were: Freebird (obviously), Green Grass and High Tides by the Outlaws (since like half the song is a guitar solo), Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits, Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson, and Summer Song by Joe Satriani. there were others but I can't remember them all and don't know where the CD is at the moment. If I can dig them up I'll go through and post the entire listing
So, what songs would you include??

I'm usually not a fan of Metallica at all but I have to give credit where it's due-the solo in One is incredible. My brother was in a band in high school and the guitarist was amazing, I was amazed when I saw him effortlessly bust out that solo while just sitting around talking with us and playing his guitar.

Awww yeeah. Another thread that I could live in for a year!
For my money, if ya can't sing the guitar solo... you're doin' it wrong. I don't care for flash, speed, or tricks. I'm a Brian May, Elliot Easton, Billy Gibbons kinda guy, so......
"Killer Queen" by Queen (or "Somebody To Love" or "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon" or...)
"Wheels" by Enuff Znuff (don't laugh. it's a brilliant, well played, compact solo. for real!)
"Dead" by My Chemical Romance (which is very much influenced by Brian May)
"Gold" by Prince.
and, the mother of 'em all "We Will Rock You" by Queen. Everytime I hear it, I wish that I could play it as well as he can. That solo is fantastic.

Hell to the yes! Great solo. One of the best. Lyrical, melodic, AND flashy.

As much as it's not as great as some of the others listed, I'm a huge fan of the solo in November Rain by Guns 'N Roses and the song in general (even though it's very un-GNR)
I'm just starting to learn guitar now and I'll be amazed if I can ever play any of the solos mentioned (I'm having a hard enough time getting rhythm parts down!)

Can't make up my mind which Pink Floyd's David Gilmour solo. It's a tie between Time and Comfortably Numb.
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile - Royal Albert Hall, 1969
Neil Young - Cortez the Killer. I know he isn't the greatest technical guitarist but I love the power and emotion in this solo.

Good call but, on a list like this... "Comfortably Numb" is a given. Kinda like the way I wouldn't bother putting Marilyn Monroe on a "most beautiful" list. It's implied. So is 90 percent of the David Gilmour catalog.

Dicky and Duane on "Blue Sky" is a pretty obvious choice. Two kick ass solos in a row, and that great little interplay at the end.

is that the one with the bird on the cd? if so i jam that song all the time!
Pete Townshend on The Who's "I Can See for Miles". He said he just played a one-note solo to contrast all the flashy players of the day like Beck, Clapton and Hendrix. I thought that was brilliant.
I can't possibly narrow down my favorite solos.

Nice list thanks for the link. I figured Working Man and a few of the others we've mentioned would be on there but I'll have to check out some of the ones I'm not familiar with.
Funny story, I noticed the Journeyman signature (loved the show) and one of the songs I'm learning to play now is Lucky Man by The Verve which was on an episode of the show. Simple 4 chord song I know but I suck since I've only been playing for like 2 weeks so it's giving me a bit of trouble :)
