so today's the day of the big protest/pray-in (http://www.newsday.com/services/newspaper/printedition/wednesday/news/ny-nybell075676345may07,0,6952366.story) regarding the acquittal of the cops who shot sean bell. since i'm close to one of the protest spots, varick and houston, i decided to check it out on my lunch break. first, i think canal and varick would be a million times more effective in disrupting traffic, but houston is interesting as it has just a single lane of traffic on either side of varick, due to construction. i understand it was earlier than their start time (i was there like 2:15) but still there was no one there. there were a few squad cars, but no people milling about at all, like you might expect.

i wonder how it will all go down in the end. anyone else have any thoughts/insight into the matter? anyone taking part? anyone think their commute will be inconvenienced? anyone near any of the other protest locations?

There's one planned a couple of blocks from me at Atlantic and Bond in Brooklyn. I don't have to drive past that spot, but I'm worried about how traffic from there will back up into the surrounding areas.

What I don't understand is how there are five or six locations for the demonstrations, and none of them are in Queens.

well, so far no news is filtering down here to nj. so i have to think that other then some traffic jams, nothing of any real substance is coming from this-if it is happening at all.

i work at 60th/3rd, and i'm gonna go down, take a look-see, fight the power and get a cup of coffee ... if anything impressive happens, i'll have a first hand account

Queens is already so crowded (it took me almost 30 minutes to go from Union Turnpike to the Whitestone Bridge today) that I don't think anyone would notice if they tied up traffic.

i went down, boring ... maybe a dozen (primarily middle-aged & white) porrly chanting protesters marching in a very tight circle in front of bloomie's

there were more onlookers (bloomingdale's workers on cigarette break) and plenty of cops keeing traffic moving smoothly

if i hear any commotion, i'll take a look ... but no one really seems to care too much

Every morning I drive the three miles from Forest Hills to Woodside and it's easily a half-hour trip.

really nothing going on, maybe a few more protesters -- but the cops have them pretty much penned/confined to a few feet on the sidewalk in

they're basically protesting the men's accessory deparment of bloomingdales ... not really sure what that says about the issue of excessive force

boring ... i was kind of hoping for blood in the streets

Must be the perfect weather keeping the protesters away.

Crowds of several hundreds of people clogged each designated protest spot, causing massive traffic headaches. The protests are expected to continue through the evening rush hour.

um, no way there were hundreds at 60th & 3rd ... maybe if you count all the cars driving by, or the folks inside buying hats ... and they had cops ensuring really smooth driving

It was like last week or so that Sharpton's car got towed because he had $900 in unpaid tickets. A 2007 Jaguar. How is it that a guy who's never had a job in his life can afford a new Jaguar? Or bail money. Or lawyer's fees.

Interesting.

Ooooooooh. You're near that Jaques Torres chocolate place. It's on Hudson and something or other. Maybe 2 blocks west of where you are.

I'd much rather spend my lunch there.

Queens City Council Considers Naming Street After Sean Bell

From the NYPost:

A City Council committee today is expected to vote on a controversial bill to rename a Queens street after Sean Bell, who was killed in a hail of 50 police bullets on what was to be his wedding day.

good for him, he deserves a street

thisll show the cops that they cant get away with shooting a convicted drug dealer who's trying to run them over with a car

So wait... He tries to run down police officers in his car... So they think naming a street after him is appropriate? Hilaaarrrrrrrious.

Bell tried to run down a guy who pointed a gun at him, after which the individual then proceeded to fire wildly in an urban environment with reckless abandon.
