I tend to be pretty picky about what I write about anymore. Lazy....sure....but most things just don't deserve in depth examination. So what moves me to write about Speed Racer? Let's just say there is a certain mystery to it. It confuses me as to why it was made.
I think I have fond memories of the American influenced Japanese cartoon series, but I barely remember it. I doubt there are many people who do. I like the Matrix as much as the next man, but let's face it, the Wackowski brothers are weird. They are not known to have a PG lifestyle and being that Speed Racer is family friendly with a soft PG, it's a bit of a 190% spin around. The color-infused trailer portraying a hyper live action reality certainly makes you wonder what the hell is going on here?
What seems overwhelming in the trailer is literally mind numbing at full length. The story is both cliche and surreal. This very much a family picture with John Goodman and Susan Sarandon heading the Racer clan but it seems the focus of the film is dictated by the youngest son and his chimp sidekick. A lot of time is devoted to the youngsters pursuit of candy and that nauseating sugar rush is what this film is all about. Nothing else matters except conveying a psychedelic hallucination of some kids drunken imagination. The story is more or less worthless and irrelevant. Speed Racer is a simplistic take on family honor and corporate greed but really it just boils down to speed and racing and color and movement. Cars flip and spin through the air with an absurd regularity. Clearly these cars don't exist in any reality we are familiar with and that goes for everything else in this film. The architecture is perhaps the most insane ever committed to film from the cityscapes down to the idealized suburban perfection. The acting is insane as well but I know that that is because they were all in service to their insane writer directors, the Wachowski's. I don't know what fueled their vision for Speed Racer but it probably wasn't candy. They were probably trying to embrace the kid in themselves that had long ago left. This is the first film they directed since the grueling Matrix Trilogy and they obviously wanted to make something completely different at any cost. The cost was great. Maybe they should have done something small and intimate like an earlier film of theirs called Bound. They have the ability to do whatever they want and that doesn't look like it turned out to be a good thing.
If your expectations are just to see a wild over the top completely adrenaline fueled action packed film experience, you'll probably be okay. If your expectations are to see something good, I think you're in for a disappointment. 44 out of 100

I thought they did V for Vendetta after the Matrix series? And i think they figure by making it a PG film and with all the colors and geared with Chim Chim and Spridle then it will draw in the young kids and their parents. This way it can compete with the big blockbuster movies to make some money since it will go against Iron Man this weekend

The Wachowski's wrote but didn't direct V for Vendetta. It was directed by James McTeauge who was a second unit director for them on The Matrix Trilogy and I think they helped hm on last year's film The Invasion.

I thought the previews made the movie have an interesting look, but didn't think it had much of a story. I didn't know they spent so much time on Spridle and Chim Chim, who were basically foils and plot devices on the cartoon, who exist for candy and riding in Speed's trunk during races.

Spindle and Chim Chim didn't so much dominate by their screen time but by their control on the content...it was as if they directed it....in other word it was as if the movie was directed by a monkey and a kid.

That's what I thought, but apparently it's not true.

I can't even enjoy the cartoon on an ironic, "campy" level. It's just dreadful.

This movie just looks like an utter clusterfuck on every level.

Spridle...Spindle.....whatever....I'm having trouble seeing...I don't like typing....I don't care that much.....Everyone's off this week so I felt obligated.....I said I was lazy....I'm not feeling well......I had an accident......(The nun in grade school said I was the king of excuses...the Priest in high school called me the tower of ignorance)....hopefully that'll give me a pass.

I wanted to see this movie because the commerical did a great job of making it seem visually interesting but, I could kinda tell that it was gonna suck ass. I smelled THE FIFTH ELEMENT aaaall over this thing.

I was right.

Two thumbs down.

Even though she is skinny now. I would watch Christina Ricci in an all night info-mercial for "The People For Cencership on Radio."
I have a problem.

SR got it's ass kicked by Iron Man and even barely beat that awful Cameron Diaz movie. Only problem is SR cost $150mill and $100mill of advertising and Diaz' cost $35mill to make.

HAHA!

You know, I think people were willing to overlook the fact that Transformers was a total mess of a movie because they had some sort of emotional connection to the original toys. I doubt many people feel the same about Speed Racer.

I took my ten year old cousin to the movies yesterday, and he insisted on seeing Speed Racer. I can usually find something at least mildly amusing in even the most kid-oriented movies. Not the case here. This may be the single worst movie-going experience I have ever had. It was loud and it gave me a migraine. My cousin didn't even like it. Stupid kid.

Does the extra weight affect Speed's racing?
