I have a very hard time talking to people. Unless I have known that person for a while, I cannot start, or carry on a conversation. This seems to go away somewhat when I drink, but not always. And honestly, I would like to be able to have a sober conversation. The thing that bothers me the most, is that I know it is happening, but I feel powerless to do anything about it.
Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know how to deal with it?

if it makes you feel any better clare i don't have friends at school either.
I also do poorly if there's more than 1 person. like i can handle a conversation with one person in a non-class setting but more than one i try to avoid or i'm incredibly silent. of course doing things alone is not a bad thing

Tazz, alcohol will always get you to talk... I'm surprised you are that shy in person when I finally met you last night.
I also have socail phobia for the most part but last night I was actually comfortable with the crew... surprised me actually. It's great that a board like this can help you id someone and then you can start a chat from there ;)
Tazz, you still rock although you didn't talk much... aGAIN! LOL

Don't worry tazz, i had the same thing happen last night at the party and 2 things got me talkin: Corona and nurse mira. after that i loosened up a bit. Alcohol and a hot woman always does the trick.

Tazz, I am the absolute
most shy person in the
entire world. I have a
horrible time talking to
people and so usually
everyone thinks I'm just a
snobby bitch. Which I am,
but that's another story.
at least from what I could
tell last night you were
talking and being totally
social!!! you just gotta get
out and do it more, and you
will gain confidence... it's all
about confidence.
Tazz, you rock!!! I have

I was talking to everyone Sauturday night. Some nights I'm fine. But at the other party, I didn't talk at all. It's like it comes in cycles. I never know when it will happen.

Tazz, I have the same problem..I get so nervous when I have to go out in public that it makes me nauseous. I don't know how to make conversations with people, I feel like a social moron...And people will say "oh no, you talk so much " blah blah....But my body is still shaking inside. Sometimes are worse than others. And sometimes if I see people out I avoid them because I don't know how to make small talk and if there is a break in the conversation, I get nervous.
I think the only answer is drugs

I definitely know where you're coming from Tazz. Esp. the part about having someone familiar as a base, and how you know it's happening but can't change course. I don't really know if I have a solution for you except for trial by fire. Sometimes just throwing yourself in there forces you to action. Good luck!
