Well, this practice, and similar ones, aren't limited to the Muslim world and it is pretty pervasive in a lot of mostly rural areas on the planet. If the loyalties are tribal and there is a strong patriarchal culture with limited contact with the global community, it is a safe bet women are treated like animals or worse.
