It seems there may have been two warning signs. So take notice if:
A.) A lake disappears.
B.) A thousand toads start hopping away.

Did toads predict the earthquake? (http://observers.france24.com/en/content/20080513-toads-predict-earthquake-dead-china)
Two days before the quake thousands of toads suddenly decided to move across a bridge in Taizhou, a town in the Jiangsu province (see photos). Chinese web users are wondering why the local authorities didn't relate the event to the imminence of an earthquake, and why scientists didn't take notice of the bizarre disappearance of a lake in Enshi, in the Hubei province, on April 26 (see photos).
Although it's difficult to prove that toads "predicted" the quake, it's certainly not impossible. We know that animals sense pre-earthquake micro-tremors, and react to underground water movements, or even changes in the composition of the air. It's just that these theories haven't been scientifically proven yet.

I cant believe how this quake is being handled. If I was a Chinese American I would be appalled. Everyone was critical of Bush's handling of Katrina, but look at how much worse China is handling this quake. They are even blocking aid and its getting way too late now. Bullshit. Its like they want the people to die. I went to a Chinese market yesterday and they had a collection box by the register and I dumped a few dollars in, and so did everyone in line. Does anyone know of a website we can donate on for this?

Not funny if you read the "Weather Wars" and other conspiracy topics often discussed on Coast to Coast. One guest actually called the "weather attacks" to come on China and Burma. Even if you think it's all crap, that much was 100% correct. The guy stated "we're" testing out new devices on opposing countries not really linked and sending a message. Believe it at all? Now I know weather such as earthquakes are somewhat predictable, but like this?? And is it so odd to think some control over weather is impossible?

Yeah, I was just asking myself.."Self, when was the last time the Meterologist on tv forcasted an earthquake? Self replied, I can't recall EVER."

I agree with you, but people criticize Bush because this country is supposed to be above such treatment of people.

You both know what I mean. Weather is often now used to describe events driven by natural forces of this planet. Sure is not your nomarl atmosphere based criteria, but it's been used plenty of times as a generality.

I think you're confusing the respective government responses to the cyclone in Burma/Myanmar and the earthquake in China. The junta in Burma is clearly guilty of crimes against humanity for delaying and refusing outside aid to their people who were drowned, made homeless, left without water and food, etc. for fear that an influx of outsiders could somehow jeopardize their grip on power.
China seems to be doing a creditable, if not perfect, job in addressing the needs of their population devastated by the earthquake. They have brought lots of their own resources to bear in the rescue/relief efforts, have been accepting outside aid and have been relatively open in letting independent press cover the tragedy.

China's government is totalitarian in many ways, that's for sure, but "jailed for free thought?" That's as bad as "they hate our freedom."

"Jailed for free thought" is a meaningless, absurd statement. Like I said, their government is often incredibly totalitarian, but so far as I know, they haven't invented some kind of thought monitoring machine. I am in no way justifying what happened at Tianamen Square, but it's rather to simple to see why it happened...totalitarian government sees a student protest targeting the government getting bigger and bigger and bigger, so they panic and crush it. If they "jailed people for free thought," the protest wouldn't have happened in the first place, nor would there have been further protestets and demonstrations to this day. China is hugely flawed, but portraying the place as if it's run by cartoon supervillains is pretty ridiculous.

Not that I'm surprised or anything, but I just read this Human Nature blog post:
The One-Child Warranty (http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/humannature/archive/2008/05/29/the-one-child-warranty.aspx)
Best section in the piece? Here:
Got that? If your child is broken, you can apply for a certificate to get a replacement child. Or you can substitute a used child and transfer the license from your previous child, with all the attendant financial rights. However, there will be no refunds.
It reads like a warranty or a software agreement. Except we're not talking about consumer electronics. We're talking about children. This is what happens when you ration people like commodities.
And all this bad press a mere two months before the start of the Bejing Olympics ... oh, for shame, China. For shame.

China's one child per family policy really is stupid. As much as we here fight over reproductive rights and to keep the government "out of the bedroom"-over there about 10,000 families are reaping what the government has sown for them...their posterity is gone.

China's one-child policy is a double-edged sword, sponsored by a government that's not exactly known for its ... humanitarianism. (Tienemen Square, anyone?)
On the one hand, it's demonstrating an awareness that resources are not unlimited, so it's preserving them for future generations.
On the other hand, it can be read as state-funded abortion ... and, in some areas, has resulted in a dearth of girls because of sex-selective abortions (most commonly associated with reports coming from India) ... families have a stronger preference for sons than they do for daughters because of the economic and cultural advantages a son will have over those daughters.
