Cat I've had since the 80's died today. He had bone cancer and today it got bad enough to paralyze him, so he was put down. I know he's just an animal and all, but since I pretty much grew up with the furball he was like a weird sweet anthropomorphic little brother to me and everyone else. That's why when we learned of his paralysis this morning, my brother an' I both drove back home from our respective places (me from Brunswick, he from Boston) to come be with him in his final moments.
I know that 20-something is a great old age for a cat, and I'm lucky to have had him around for as long as I have. On the flip side, he was lucky to have a family that loved him the way we did as well as the way he was cared for by us all. So I have no illusions that it's a blessing that his time was now and not ten years earlier and all that other airy stuff. That doesn't mean I won't miss him terribly and feel a real sense of loss whenever I look down the hallway and don't see him there anymore.
I guess it's a real testament to how good he made people feel, even those who generally hated cats loved him. If there was a bad day going on, he seemed to pick up on the vibe, curl up in your lap, and purr constantly until you felt a little better. That and a billion other little things make me miss him like hell.
RIP lil' Budday I miss ya

ugh dude, I am so very sorry.
I have lost all three childhood cats, save one... the fourth. and the best kitty in my world, at least. He is 17 and has seen me through boys, engagement, college, moving out, and well.....everything.
They become family after some time and so I send you my prayers and thoughts and tears.
He will be waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge someday. Healthy and eager for your friendship again. :)

My best friend just lost her american bulldog Bo Bo, from cancer also. BoBo was a really great dog I tear up everytime I think of him, so I can not imagine the hurt you are feeling now. She got to take BoBo home with her for his last few days, he was such a loyal friend to everyone who knew him. BoBo loved kids he was just a great dog. He passed away this past Friday.

When you have pets for such a long time they do become really close family members.
A few years ago we had to put down my dog after 14-15 years becuase he was losing his sight hearing and self-control. It was one of the worst days of my life. We had him creamated(sp?) and i have him with me at my new house and his old leash and some pictures framed. miss him every day and and and . . . :glurps:

Losing a pet can be one of the most difficult things... the fear of something happening to my dog or even her life one day ending sometimes makes me wonder if it's worth it to have pets at all... but you have to enjoy the time you have, not spend it worrying about the end of their life, and it sounds like you had an amazing relationship with your cat.
You say "just an animal", but it's so much more than that, I like to think of my pets more as spiritual companions that keep us in touch with our emotions, and their unconditional love is a precious gift.
I'm sorry for your loss.

This is the kind of news that gets to me. Worse thing in the world to lose a pet. Animals really are the most amazing creatures, just sucks. Sorry to hear this CCC.

Thanks to all who replied. It means alot to me to read the well-wishes and does provide a small bit of comfort to know I'm not the only one who would get torn up over a pet. Makes me feel less stupid. God bless the lot of ya.

Thats sounds awful, but I've experienced the same thing and I think there's a few reasons for it. For one, dogs are part of your daily life, whereas even close family members you might only see once a week or so. If that. Your dog is with you every day, so you notice the absence more in your daily routine. You notice it all the time. Also, pets are sort of like surrogate children. They depend on you so much, they're so playful, they're needy at times. When you lose a pet, sometimes you feel on some level like you let them down. Didn't take good enough care of them, should have known, stuff like that. Whether its true or not.

Awww, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I've never had a cat or dog because of allergies. But my sister had to put down her terrier, Ditto, down last year. Maybe you can adopt Skippy.

I kinda react to losing a loved one by doing what Ron sez "suck it in till u die of stomach cancer" for about a week then let it out 1st day I don't get enough sleep past that week-long waiting period for mourning. then its back to takin the pain and i dont like to express it openly ever again.
Thanks again for everyone's condolences again... and I'm sorry to all who have lost a pet themselves.

IMO its best to talk about your pet when it is relevant to a conversation. Let the memory live and don't stash it. It is much healthier. Although it brings pain to talk about a past pet it also brings joy. My childhood dog died dramatically from a tumor on the spinal cord. One day healthy, the next day we had to put him down. It hurts me still that he is not around, but I talk about his quirks and original personality and I feel like there is a part of him that I can keep alive.
My condolences.

Sorry to hear, been in those shoes. In time, the hurt is less, but you never forget your furbuddy, and even years later, getting misty eyed is going to happen. *hug*

My kitties are my family. One of my cats broke his leg really badly under unknown circumstances; he came staggering to the door one night, and an X-ray the next day revealed his leg was snapped in two at the knee. He had to have a rod put in his leg. It cost me about $1,500 all told. I'd have paid much more to help my kitty out.
My other cat here is my mother's cat. I took him in after she went to the nursing home. I remember on the day she died, he started following me around and looking up at me with these sad eyes, as if he knew. It tore me up about as much as anything that day.
People don't get cats because cats have a small, select circle of people they love, and they could give a fuck about everyone else. But when they love you, they love you completely. So of course you'll feel sad about losing that. And you should. But remember it.

I'm sorry I didn't see this until just now Tim.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I've lost pets in the past and can feel your pain.
(Sometimes I look at Alice, Otis, and Lloyd and think about their "ends." They are getting up in years and, as one ex-boyfriend put it, I'm going to be a mess when Otis goes.")
