As a Jew himself, Einstein said he had a great affinity with Jewish people but said they "have no different quality for me than all other people".

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.

He's was, and still is, absolutely right.

And Moe, change your tags... there is nothing anti-Semitic about the article or Einstein's views.

Albert Einstein described belief in God as "childish superstition"

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish."

If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism.

Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: It transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural and spritual; and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity. -Albert Einstein

Just to prove he didn't know everything.

The problem here is that the article is relating to you that he did not believe in an organized religion or that religion's concept of God. He did not believe in a Christian/Jewish God, but never denied that there could be a "higher power" that created the universe.

I agree, he did not believe in "God" as far as most humans believe in a "God" but he never believed in atheism either, or flat out said "There is no God"

Just to prove he didn't know everything.

Not only that, he chose to live in New Jersey.

He was offiered the Presidency of Israel. 1952. No shit.

You can see and read the letter here. (http://speakingoffaith.publicradio.org/programs/einsteinsethics/eban-israelipresidency.shtml) He turned it down, obviously.

He loathed politics as much as organized religion, he said at age 12 it became obvious to him the stories of the Bible werent true and that set him on his path towards a more skeptical view of the Universe, to badly quote him from bad memory.

He was misundertsoof and misquoted. There are several quotes 'God does not play dice w/ the cosmos' 'God is subtle but not mailicious' and when pressed by a NY rabbi said he believed 'In Spinoza's God, who revealed himself in the harmony of all being, not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and actions of men'

Some in the past have used the above to argue he believed in God, but I think it was clear if anything, it had nothing to do with anything resembling any of the organized religions.

Mike, I just should have kept quiet. You explained it much better then I did.

My, oh, my. Stories like this just make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I have an Einstein biography that I haven't read on my bookshelf. I'll start reading it tonight.

No way yours rocks and is short. Short answers always trump long explanations.

I'm just bored and wordy and I have a lot of books so I pulled out Sagan [shocker!] and
'Broca's Brain'; which has a chapter on Einstein, just about everything you havent read elsewhere. Highly recommeded.
