Childhood Fashion Faux-Pas?

During a conversation with a friend today I remembered I used to wear a bolo-tie when I was about 10. My mom was going to Texas on a business a lot and I remember thinking they were really cool.

I also had spikey bangs when I was in 4th grade... the shorter and spiker, the better... in reality I looked like an ass.

When I was a kid my parents used to make me wear husky pants from Sears that weren't long enough, "high waters"...

And when I was 8 I carried around a briefcase for school instead of a bookbag.

Of course, but does it make you a victim if you do it to yourself? I remember getting "tracks" shaved into the sides of my head, wearing my overalls backwards during the Kriss-Kross phase at age 12, and wearing a nose warmer to Kindergarden.

What's a Nose Warmer you ask? A nose warmer is nothing more than a mini beanie knitted out of yarn with one string on either side. The purpose was to tie this awful thing (which was red, white, blue and oh so subtle) around your head and the 'cap' goes over your nose, thus keeping it warm in the winter months. This gift was the brain child of my very backwoods, but very sweet, free spirited aunt. So being a naive kindergartener, I wore it to school because it was cold out. I was mercilessly teased and abused when I got to class, even by the teacher. What a friggin embarassment that was (even though if it were someone else, I would've did the same). Damn those scarring memories. Here's an artist's rendition of that day:

But a few years ago when I met my fiance, I was telling her about the incident over a few drinks. She knitted one for me and put it with my Christmas presents. Damn fine stitching too.

When I was five we were going on a cruise. My mother had gotten her hands on some bright fuchsia velvet material which happened to "fall off the truck" at my dad's work. She paid a woman to make her a gown to wear at the formal dinner on the cruise and there was material left over. So, my mom had this lady make me a suit with it.

I not only wore that bright fuchsia velvet suit on the cruise but at every family wedding and party for the next couple of years. To this day there are pictures of me wearing that suit in my parent's living room and my kids get a good chuckle out of them.

Why thank you. It displays my young Italian American Afro. I guess my aunt figured she invented some new thing that would catch on. When I came home and told my mom, she was horrified that I wore it and threw it right in the trash.

My daughter is 3 and goes to daycare/preschool. I got an email this morning similar to the subject of this thread.

Ana went to school in a pair of pink "cammo" pants with some kind of white top (her Mom dressed her after I left). When she got to school, one of the kids said "Ana, you don't match." Apparently this really depressed my daughter and although she was initially excited to be at school and see her friends, she then just wanted to go home and was terribly upset.

She is a beautiful little girl that should NEVER feel badly about how she looks. It makes my heart hurt. :down:

Hmmmm, where should I start?

In Kindergarten, I had a pixie/shag haircut.
In the first grade, it had grown out to a fuzzbowl ... short on top, but longer on the bottom (bad '80s layers) ...

Add to this the fact that my mother used to sew my clothes when I was little.

My school picture in the first grade featured me in my navy blue Annie sailor dress that my mother, my aunts and my grandmother had worked on piecemeal ... I think for my Kindergarten graduation.

In the second grade, I received a red dirndl kind of outfit from my aunt & uncle at Christmas. It had a white blouse with embroidered puffy sleeves, a Peter Pan collar, silver buttons and a mock lace-up detail (in silvertone chain) on the bodice of the red jumper...and a matching white apron with red embroidery.

(I loved that outfit. They claimed they'd brought it from Germany.)

And then ... there was the "skater 'do" haircut (complete with braided rattail) I talked myself into in the 6th grade.

When that grew out, there was the spiral perm in the 8th grade. (Eww.)

I started reading from this thread to my boyfriend (he is playing GTA 4 in the same room) and he said I needed to find "that Halloween picture". Years ago when I was in college and ran a website that was infinitely more successful than the piece of crap I have now, I ran a short contest based on this picture. People were supposed to guess which of these awful preschool kids was me. I am surprised I still had it around! I just mention this so it makes more sense when you see weird numbered things on the picture.

I actually kind of was a victim in this case. I don't think I had anything to do with choosing this awful costume. In case anyone would enjoy the fun of guessing which kid I was, I won't specific just yet.

I remember the names of a lot of these kids, even though I haven't seen them in forever. Kid #5 stole my My Little Pony ballet set that year and told the teacher it was hers. And the teacher believed her and let her take it home, and I never got it back and my parents thought I lost it and was lying to cover up my mistake. We went to the same high school and every time I saw her in the halls, I thought of what she did and I knew that, deep down, she was not a good person.

Kid #1's mom had cancer, which we all found exciting, and was the first person I ever heard say "ad-VER-tiz-ment" instead of the normal Midwestern "AD-ver-tyze-mint". I thought it sounded very fancy, like something the Aristocats would say.

Kid #3 used to make a lot of rape jokes in junior high and what I remember most about him was that on "nacho cheese day", which was where they'd give us a variety of junk foods to dip in nacho cheese, he would take a hot dog, dip it in cheese, and enthusiastically fellate it to freak the girls out. He went around asking younger kids if they liked the clitoris. When I was in seventh grade, he asked my "boyfriend" if he liked the clitoris, and he bluntly asked, "What is a clitoris?" and I was SOOOOOOO embarrassed because I knew exactly what the clitoris was and was mortified that it even came up. Our relationship was doomed anyway.

There is a picture of me in some kind of Chinese silk opera costume than my grandparents brought back from China when I was about 6.
