Why do they even drive? I had a mini road rage incident yesterday with a fossil in a (surprise) Buick. I was cruising along a 40 MPH road, doing the speed limit, and approaching a green light. Just as I was upon it, this dinosaur decided it was a great time for him to make a right on red and completely cut me off, forcing me to slam on by brakes.

I leaned on the horn for a good 10 seconds and he gives me the palm up out the window as if to say "what's your problem?"

I leaned my head out the window screaming "YOU'RE TOO OLD TO DRIVE! GO HOME AND STAY THERE!"

It's obvious the elderly no longer have the ability to judge speed, time, and space, and it's NOT an infringement on their rights to re-test them and revoke their driving PRIVILEGES if they're a danger to themselves and everyone else around them.

The turn signal noise helps their hearts to stay on beat.

They don't have enough arm strength to turn the wheel enough for it to automatically turn off.

They've actually been going in a very large circle for the last 3 hours.

They know damn well it's on, they just like irritating young whipper snappers like you.

They're trying to remember where they live.

The elderly in NJ are reluctant to give up their driving privileges because it helps them continue to feel independent. And also because the public transportation system is really crappy.

A Google search to find something I'd read about a while ago, I thought in Slate, turns up the Eastern Maine Transportation Collective (http://www.google.com/search?q=elderly+drivers+%2B+ride+share+%2B+maine&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) ... which is a program that encourages older drivers to turn in their Buicks in exchange for transportation "credits" that can then be used in a car service so they don't have to give up their independence ... and can get to their doctors' appointments (or VFW meetings, etc.) on time.

It's a very interesting program, and I think it would work well in NJ, but that would involve the government actually working FOR the people of the state, rather than the current mess.

because they can't stay 'turned on' themselves

If it'll work, I'm all for it. My 94 year old grandfather totaled his car last winter and has been begging me to take him to buy a new one. I keep putting him off. There's no way he should be driving anymore, but he constantly complains about how "trapped" he feels without a car.

I always just assumed it was because they couldn't hear it.
