My boyfriend and I are thinking about moving in the next year, we are looking for a medium size town with lots of mountains and breweries...any suggestions?
Right now I have Flagstaff, AZ in mind or Asheville, NC

Burlington, Vermont?

This would be my choice... fresh air, mountains, tons of green, awesome small towns in every direction, camping/hiking galore, Magic Hat brewery right down the street... does it get any better than that?

I've visited Flagstaff several times and lived about an hour from Ashville.

I think it boils down to what you want the seasons to be like. The summers tend to be a little tougher in Flagstaff, but the winters might be somewhat harsher in NC.

This is a real life change for you, so try to explore both areas as much as possible.

How much vacation time do you have? Can you spend 2 weeks in both places?

If so, go there but only do the tourist stuff for about 3 or 4 days. The rest of it spend it as if you lived there. Explore the places to shop (for both food, clothing, and entertainment). What type of hospitals they have, what's real estate like?

You need to pick a place that you would enjoy living in, not just visiting.

That may possibly be the worse choice ever. Chico is horrible. Might as well tell someone Stockon, CA.

Bennington is actually located in my favorite little corner of the world... from Albany, drive east until you hit Mass and VT... Williamstown and North Adams, Mass, up through the Berkshires into Bennington... I wish I was there Right Now!!!
I actually had the oppotunity to live up there but it would've been completely on my own and I eventually chickened out and moved less than 1/4 of a mile away from where I was in the first place! :(

A buddy of mine lived in Ashville NC and loved it. He's a big fan of nature and whatnot.

If I had to move, it would either be San Diego, CA or Boston, MA

My parents are retiring to the eastern Valley of Phoenix and they love it. I know "Flag" is a bit a ways away from the Valley, but I drove through there and it's very nice. It's also cosmopolitan - a lot of people in PHX retreat to Flag during the summer months because it's more temperate up there.

You're also in a spot that's 2 hours away from the Phoenix metro, and about 4 hours away from Vegas.

and for what it's worth, I'd be in the east Valley of Phoenix from October-May, and Maui, Hawaii from May to September.

Yeah, but it's on the highway, across from the airport, with park-n-lock places all around it. And lots of barbed wire.

(Currently, there's a DirecTV billboard with its message in Brazilian Portugese nearby.)

If you're gonna live in Mendo, move north a few miles to Fort Bragg, as one of the best microbreweries is located there. (http://www.northcoastbrewing.com/home.htm)

Amazing. I just took a two year hiatus from my stellar teaching career here in VA and lived briefly in both towns.

Portland is an extremely efficient, eco-friendly, liberal, progressive city. Great downtown area, great bohemian, Village-like area on Hawthorne Ave on the east side

Tahoe is great for the obvious outdoor opportunities, casinos and whatnot, but winters are brutal and its very expensive, not many housing options unless you are some Silicon Valley numnut who has a shiteau at Heavenly. Many Europeans and Ugly Americans

My choice would be Vancouver, BC area for summers and somewhere on the Baja peninsula for winters

My Brother and his family live in Hudson NC, which is about 1 1/2 hrs east of Asheville. It's a very nice suburban-type area. There is plenty of civilization nearby but it also offers a nice semi-rural setting as well. I remember when we visited last summer we went up into one of the Blue Ridge mountains near Blowing Rock or Boone. We walked across a mile-high foot bridge. It was an awesome view, especially for someone who's spent his entire life at or below sea level.

thanks for all the advice, I'm tired of living in the Tampa area...we moved here a little over a year ago and I miss the mountains...and I'm not really looking forward to this crazy humid summer!! the beaches are nice but i'd rather be hiking and having a local brewski!

I have lived in Pittsburgh, PA - Athens, OH - Greensboro, NC - Norwalk, CT - Naples, FL - Irvine, CA - Dallas, TX - Charlotte, NC

If I could move anywhere it would be to New York City. I am dieing to live in the city. If I had to pick one of the places I used to live, it would be Irvine, CA.

I traveled a ton the past couple years for work (it sucks believe it or not). The best cities I have visited that I would recomend to live in are: Austin, TX - Greenville, SC - Kansas City, MO - San Francisco/San Jose, CA

A word of warning about the Pacific North West - the issue with the rain really is a PROBLEM. I spent a lot of time there a year ago and the rain was unbareable. It really changed my outlook and personality. I could never live there.

I haven't been there in years, but Asheville, NC was always a cool place. Even Ronnie B. has said a lot of nice things about it. Plus, you might be able to get a job at Handi-Lift!

I miss living in Wisconsin (after years of bitching about living there), in the Appleton-Oshkosh area. Lower cost of living, much more laid-back, and people don't drive like assholes (though they do tend to drive a smidge on the slow side).

And 8 just wants to live near a Culver's (http://www.culvers.com/).

As far as breweries go, it's frickin' Wisconsin! EVERYTHING is cooked in beer.

Frederick, MD. We have mountains, a great downtown and it's home of Blue Ridge and Wild Goose Beers. Plus Crazy Jen lives here.
I've lived here all my life and have no desire to leave. It's that good.

Any decent sized city in Portugal. It might help if I actually learn to speak some Portuguese.

Portland, OR is great but if you are looking for something a bit smaller, Bellingham, WA is an interesting city not too far south of Vancouver.

Bellingham, WA is great. Nelson, BC is even better and it doesn't rain as much as the cities closer to the ocean.

I lived in Flagstaff during the summer of '91. I loved it.
I don't know how the winters are there, but that was the best summer.
No humidity, blue skies (almost no clouds), and very little rain.

I lived in Berthoud, CO (just south of Loveland) for about 3 months. It's kinda like Jersey, only cleaner air and the mountains were about 5 miles away.

The only thing that freaked me out was one week in September. It was 65-75 degrees all week. Thursday morning I wake up and there's 8 inches of snow on the ground!!! It all melted away by 2:00 as the temps climbed back up to 60.

There was also a hilly spot between Berthoud and Loveland that you could see practically every lightning strike for 15 miles in every direction.

That's the problem. Everyone keeps moving to the middle of nowhere for cheap houses, and then "Nowhere" becomes an expensive place to live.

I hear that they also have wonderful sausages and cheese in WI.

(One year, we got a Christmas box o' stuff from my aunt Pat and uncle Charlie, who were stationed out in WI for a few years ... and that box contained a hunk of Cheddar cheese ... in the shape of the state of Wisconsin. Yum! State-shaped cheese!)
