Dave was talking about how a lot of people talk about their record collections but don't have a record player.
Just picked up a stereo someone was getting rid of. It has a turntable so I went into the local hippie town to pick up some vinyl so I could test it out.
Holy crap!
I forgot how different the sound is - but the thing is ... the two records I ran across were old Iron Butterfly and Young Rascals albums. I'm hooked ... anyone have any more hippie/ psychedelic favorites they'd share?

I think Gvac has a collection of Doors records that could only be described as "World Class"

I've been lucky enough to obtain some classics through yard sales and such. Led Zep, CSNY, Van Morrison, Zappa, a bunch of Springsteen, & Warren Zevon among others. I love that nostalgic crackle of needle on vinyl.

I gave my collection to a little emo kid. I always thought I would collect, but after flipping the album once, I rememberd how much I hated records.

I still have quite a bit of my vinyl, and I'll buy from this little collectible shop up the road on occasion. I have one of those replica antique radios that also has a turntable inside, so I am able to listen to the records should the desire hit me. Interestingly enough I heard on WFUV (Fordham University Radio) recently that Joe Jackson was going to release his new album, Rain, on vinyl as well as CD. I think a few artists are starting to do this. There are even new turntables being manufactured that have a USB link so you can transfer your vinyl tracks to the computer. The music industry is trying any gimmick it can come up with to sell records.

My wife got me an ION USB turntable for X-Mas and I love it. They run between $100 - 150 and come with the standard stereo cables so you can plug it into your stereo too. I've started ripping my albums into mp3 files and once that's done it's on to the 45's!

I didn't realize they were that inexpensive. I think I'll be getting one of them myself. My albums are in pristine condition so the transfers should sound pretty good.

I don't have a stereo, but I have a decent turntable. I hooked it up to my comp, and it sounds great. Besides... My comp speakers are better than any other speaker system I own.
A few years ago my grandfather insisted on giving me his old entertainment center. It's got a turntable, a tuner, and a reel to reel player, as well as built in speakers.
I have my TV on top of it but for some reason I've never plugged in any of the audio equipment. I haven't listened to any of my vinyl albums in over 20 years.

Haha! Alas, no longer.

Anyone else remember this?

I almost spit out my coffee today when Ronnie B said someting to the effect "try cleaning a bag of weed on your ipod player." As anyone knows the double albums were the best thing for getting rid of stems and seeds.
Ah the good old days

You know it! A Fisher receiver with a big old tuning knob.

I agree that the double album is perfect for weed, but CD's were perfect for chopping up lines.
And those damn record cleaners are way too expensive, now. I use one I got cheap off Ebay. Some guy was making them himself. It works great.

My dad had a tube amp that came as an assemble it yourself kit. It worked great. Eventually, one of the components on it was going bad. We had to move the amp out of the cabinet and set it on top. When it began to hum, we'd just push on it, and the humming would stop. That system worked fine, but it sucked when I had parties. Some drunk idiot would inevitably set on of my LP's on top of the hot tube amp, and it would melt the album.

And yet nothing in the world sounds like 'em. I will only play electric guitar thru a tube amp. A solid state amplifier is to a tube amp what an AM transistor radio is to surround sound.

HAHAHA!
You've got a unique perspective on life, Doc.
Kudos.
I still have a lot of old vinyl (got a recent addition in fact!) but my turntable was damaged when I moved into my place and I need to get it repaired.

Get high and listen to vinyl - I never would have (and this was 15 years ago in another life) but in 1993 in Barcelona, most of the kids still primarily used the "tocadiscos" and it was all vinyl. We partook in some moroccan, Riders on the Storm came on and I always go back to that moment when people talk about how different vinyl sounds.

Back around '79/'80 (yes, I'm forty flirf) I had an old tube bass amp where the head rose from within the cabinet when you flicked a switch. The cabinet stood about 4 ft tall and it had some serious power. I don't remember who made it but it was the coolest amp I ever had.

I collect surf music, and a lot of that stuff was never made available on cd.
I like vinyl...people are always throwing away record collections or giving them to goodwill. Legal free music!
