WYSP/Philadelphia has fired morning show host Kidd Chris and program director John Cook due to the airing of a racist song. The song "Schwoogies" was originally performed by Lady Gash in the studio on March 21 and sung to the tune of Blondie's "Call Me." The song aired a few times before it became an issue resulting in the terminations.

"We found the song to be highly offensive and completely inappropriate for broadcast on our airwaves. When senior management of the station learned that it had been played, they took immediate steps to prevent it from ever appearing on the station again," CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo told FMQB. "At the same time, we launched an extensive internal investigation into the situation including a thorough review of the editorial controls and systems we have in place to prevent this type of content from airing. We instituted additional educational training for the station, and have taken appropriate disciplinary action, including termination of the individuals involved."

It took them two months to fire them? Jeez.

I mean, SFSIII took a week, Imus took two weeks.

Well, O&A back to Philly?

Isn't that the PD that chose to go without O&A in philly? I'd be willing to bet on their return to YSP fairly soon.

Yes. He pulled O&A off and switched Chris from afternoons to morning.

Now, I'm wondering if MMR makes the move to get Chris... but Chris might have a long term pay-or-play deal like O&A did back in the day.

Chris is the only personality worth a damn on WYSP, so MMR might make a play.

I was wondering, also, why the PD got canned as well - but the fact that the song was played repeatedly is what became the issue and then falls into Cook's hands.

i'd be very happy to re-add wysp back to my radio presets but after the way they dumped O&A this time around, i really am not holding out much hope.

You may remember "Lady Gash" as RF.net member, Feisty Gal.

Nice job Lisa.

Well, the PD is the one who made the choice to pull O&A out. It comes down to money. If they still have to pay Chris, you might see O&A back on there. They might go music only for two weeks and then bring in O&A. Who knows. Replacing Chris with O&A over a situation like this is like cauterizing a wound with battery acid.

Dumb question: Was there any outrage in Philly over this? I've heard NOTHING about this and my ear was close to what was going on in Philly.

So let me get this straight...

Old-school Member uses a term that originated for public consumption on O&A (because it wasn't O&A's word, but it was part of a classic O&A story with Bruce Mittman) on a show that replaced O&A in Philly which gets the host fired and might get O&A back in Philly.

I don't know if that's ridiculously stupid or completely Machiavellian.

i haven't listened to wysp since o&a left but i know people who were fans and this hasn't come up. a guy in my office heard it originally and was surprised that it took 2 months for the firing. it was never brought up by any news programs/papers here. in fact, this is the first i'm hearing of it...

There's something more to it then. Gotta be. You don't take out your morning host whose basket you put all your eggs into and a ton of promotion behind just to pull the rug out six months later.

I'm guessing format flip that was already determined awhile ago, and just looked for a reason to get rid of Chris.

i know that they (the show) have been battling with preston & steve on wmmr since before they went to mornings (i know cuz i found an preston's mmr laminate with a bunch of mmr contact numbers on it and i took into Chris at the ysp studios) and there have been some blow ups between the shows. perhaps they went a little too far in their radio war.

if the format is being flipped (which i think will happen now that chris is gone), the only way they could go is alternative rock since there hasn't been an alternative station in philly for many moons...

104.5 has been sort of alternative for about a year now, but they have also become quite repetitive

I am with friday on this one. I dont know why, or what this is about, but all i know is that friday is nice. Plus i don't like kidd chris' show so its of little consequence to me, but i'm sure he'll get a gig someplace else, this type of thing only ever helps to create more buzz around someone.

This. After reading the lyrics of the song, it's not even funny, just someone trying to be racist for the sake of being edgy. She was horribly unfunny back in the day, so this is not surprising.

I think the best part was her away message last night

"Sorry Philly"

And the thing of it is this is going to just make it harder for people to do truly edgy, clever comedy, especially about race. The reaction will be still more restriction on what hosts can and cannot say, and they'll inevitably go too far.

Maybe John DeBella can take the morning spot. Is he even still on the air in Philly?

Yes. He works for MGK in Philly, the classic rock hits station.

I guess the old O&A always win in the end saying strikes again!

I don't know if WMMR would try to pick him up, but I KNOW it wouldn't be for the morning slot - Preston & Steve rule this market.

Maybe the afternoon, but I don't think WMMR would want to overload their station with talk. They have prided themselves on being primarily a music station; of course the all-mighty dollar could have something to say about that.

Ouch...lyrics are pretty rough

"Coloreds steal your wallets and coloreds have pink feet. Coloreds are loud and obnoxious, when they watch movies. Sticky fingers, what they are, Always try to jack my car, Schwoogies! Or shines, you can call them anything you like. Schwoogies! Watch out, jigs will rob you, day or night. Schwoogies. Mookie doesn't like to work, Just rolls blunts all day long. But there's one job he can do, hold a lantern on my lawn. If someone else has your watch on, you can bet it's a moolignon. Shwoogies! All Around, there's Sambos, monkeys, knuckle draggers, So much brown Mandingo, Go Mr. Bojangles (unintelligible). I have no problem singing about the Negroes."

What the hell could the angle have possibly been here? I know O&A used to do the racist songs parody thing, or whatever, but those days are long gone, and I can't really imagine what the context is.

That's radio death....especially nowadays.

Seriously. Might as well have just dropped the N-bomb. It probably would have been less offensive to people that get offended by words.
