Satellite of Love: Lou Reed joins Sirius Radio
Perhaps it's acquired a few extra layers of crustiness over the years, but there's little doubt that Lou Reed's sweet, sensual voice has always had the power to stand on its own. When the man talks, it's the sound of pure New York City cool seeping out through his lips.

So bless the folks at Sirius Satellite Network: they're giving Sweet Lou his own show on their Sirius Disorder channel. Entitled "Lou Reed's New York Shuffle," the programming block will feature Reed and producer Hal Willner spinning an eclectic mix that ranges from rock to jazz to opera. But hopefully none of that metal machine music, eh, Lou?

The show made its debut Saturday, but don't despair if you missed out: Sirius will rebroadcast the inaugural program at 4 p.m. today on Sirius Channel 70. The New York Shuffle will take place regularly at 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and fans can even submit song requests here.

Meanwhile, Reed continues to settle into his golden years, reportedly marrying longtime lady friend Laurie Anderson last month. The Daily Swarm (which is sort of like Paste's longtime, virtual lady friend) also hipped us to an interesting quip that Reed made at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this month. Apparently Reed has officially denied the rock critic messiah, AKA Lester Bangs. Oh, Lou. You're so cranky sometimes.

Finally, Reed is on his way across Europe in support of his Julian Schnabel-directed concert documentary, Lou Reed's Berlin, due out in the U.S. on July 18. He'll be playing shows with a 30-piece band, a children's choir and sets designed by Schnabel.

Unfortunately the article was written yesterday so when they say the show will be repeated today at 4pm, it means Monday. I'll have to check it out next week.

Too bad Sirius doesn't repeat their programs as often as XM does.

Disorder got moved from its original spot, and if you dial it up, your receiver says you're listening to "Planet Jazz." And they haven't fixed it.

I figured the show tie in, is the closing theme, Satellite of Love.

And man is Lou coming off as sounding bitchy with the way he conducted himself during this interview:

Lou Reed Wants to Talk About His New Radio Show, Does Not Want to Talk About Money

Last month Lou Reed became the latest rock icon to foray onto satellite radio when he launched "New York Shuffle," a weekly free-form show on Sirius co-hosted by producer Hal Willner (who also collaborated on Reed's new concert doc, Berlin). We spoke to Reed about the show, which broadcasts an eclectic mix of music from Animal Collective to Ornette Coleman to Solomon Burke to Peaches, and — less successfully — his financial stake in the struggling company.

How did this show come into being? Did Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin wine and dine you?
I've always wanted to do a radio show, and I was talking with Hal Willner about doing the kind of radio show that once was here in New York where the guys played whatever they really liked. You know, I did it when I was in college. I liked being a D.J. I think the radio is amazing — I learned to play from the radio. The Sound of the Hound, Magnificent Montague, Alan Freed, people like that.

What kind of audience do you envision when you're doing a show? The commuter from Staten Island?
You're joking, right?

Look, they have thousands of people who do things like that. We're just there playing music that we think is really great. I mean, I was just listening to some theremin music that Moog puts out on a DVD sampler and I've got to play this, it's so astonishingly beautiful. I was listening to another group the other day called the Books that was pretty good. And then Willner played this amazing old Solomon Burke track. Ah, fantastic. Wouldn't it be great if there were like hundreds of people playing it like that, turning you on to some really good shit?

Your show is called the "New York Shuffle." As music has been migrating from local stores and radio stations to satellite radio and the Internet, do you think there's still such a thing as a New York sound?
I think these days it's more of a Brooklyn sound. It's not out of New York anymore; it's all out of Brooklyn. I go out there to listen to music. A lot of the stuff we played, when we checked out where it came from, it was from Brooklyn.

The music industry is going through a lot of turmoil, obviously, with labels closing and record stores shutting down all over the country. What role do you think radio plays today?
Stations should pay attention to what people really want to listen to and not have these restrictive playlists. That's what I think. I'm not usually the one someone turns to about advice on how to make money.

Sirius's impending merger with XM is anticipated to boost earnings. Do you own any stock in the company?
What are you, a fucking asshole? I'm here telling you the truth about music and you want to know if I have stock in the fucking radio? You fucking piece of shit. What did I do to deserve that?

Moving on. You've got a film out, you've got your radio show, you've got a new book of photography coming up — is there a new album in the works?
No. Nothing I feel like talking about. Good-bye.

He tends to sound bitchy, because he is bitchy.

Lou can be a tough interview.

I don't blame him. I don't know if he has issues about money or if he was trying to "keep it real" and stick to the topic of his show, but this interviewer is a douchebag. He had Lou Reed for an interview and could have asked him anything and this is what he came up with? Could you imagine, say, Ron asking those kinds of questions to Lou Reed?

I'm not a Lou Reed fan but I know enough about the guy that this is a question you wouldn't ask him - why would anyone care if he has stock in either company in the first place?

He had some legendary tangles with Lester Bangs back in the day. If you don't own "Psychotic Reactions and Carborateur Dung", get it. Now. If you can't go to a bookstore and buy it, order it off Amazon. If you do go to a bookstore and they don't have it, punch the manager in the taint. If you can't afford it, steal it.

FYI, Hal Willner, Lou's co~host on the show is a VERY BIG DEAL music producer, he has booked the musical acts for Saturday Nite Live for over 25 years & he is considered to be the inventor of the tribute album, tho the ones he did were actually interesting and good as opposed to the vast majority that followed his trail blazing lead!!!
