View Full Version : My dog won't stop licking!!!

My dog won't stop licking herself. She pretty much exclusively licks her paws and arms, but constantly, for hours! She leaves wet spots everywhere she's been from constantly licking. She has no sores or wounds or anything. She seems perfectly healthy. This has been going on for about 3 months now. Before that I never, ever noticed her doing it.
Why?
Do dogs lick when they're lonely? Or feeling neglected? Or fidgety?

What a let down. I was expecting something completely different.
Anyhooo.
Do they lick to remove their scent so they cannot be tracked?
I blame your lesbian friends for this.

The paws aren't red or raw at all? Have you checked if the dog has a splinter or cyst? Checked around the claws for inflamation?
Dogs can become really bored, and a part of boredom is overgrooming sometimes. It could also be a fungus, sort of like doggie athletes foot.
I would suggest calling your Vet, and running it by them. See what they think. They may ask you to check for irritation. They may suggest that you purchase sprays they sell to stop animals from chewing on their paws. Most are water-based, so it ends up being safe for the animal.

There is a bottle of pills for like $8-9 at walmart, it is suppost to be for skin health, and it works well after a week or so, it has cut down the dogs licking allot.
I have also started to introduce more actual meat into the dogs diet, as I believe the lack of meat products in most food contributes to this in some dogs.

It could be a nervous habit the dog has picked up, did you adopt the dog? I know i had a friend whos dog did it because the dog used to be abused and developed the habit

I adopted Stasha about 4 years ago and she was most likely abused (cuz she's got some issues )...
I checked and she has no spots or bumps or anything. It changes which foot she licks anyway... if I tell her to stop she'll continue licking elsewhere.
I have to put an end to it... I have a little bit of a complex where I HATE the sound of dogs licking. I had a Doberman growing up with a huge open wound on her paw and after about 5 years of it never healing because we couldn't get her to stop licking (sprays, creams, Elizabethan collars, you name it, we tried it!!) she finally just passed away from old age, with that same stupid wound on her paw. Now when I hear licking it's like fingernails on a chalkboard!

I would bet its a nervous habit the dog picked up, talk to your vet about it
But in all likelihood its not something serious just an irritation, i used to hate listening to my buddies dog playing suck face with itself so i know where you are coming from

You should check into the sprays they sell at pet stores. Like I mentioned, they are water-based, and have a bitter taste. You can spray this on the paws as a deterrent.
But do remember, if it isn't a medical issues, it is a nervous or bored tick.
Have you tried chew toys, like Kong Toys (http://www.kongcompany.com/worlds_best.html)? I bought a couple of these, filled them with treats and/or peanut butter, and my dogs spend a long time chewing on them. Anything to keep them active from being bored.

You're onto something with the Kong toys... Stasha LOVES to chew so next time I see her licking maybe I can try distracting her with that.

Good luck. The kong toys are really great, and it takes forever for them to get the treat out.
Have you cleaned and clipped your dogs claws? Part of grooming for the dog could be cleaning caked out dirt or whatever from the crevice under the claw. Just a thought.

Stasha won't let me clip her claws. It's absolutely the ONLY time she will bite me to hurt me. If she ever bites me otherwise, it's just to play and it barely ever hurts, but if I try to clip her claws she will bite me until I bleed. So I don't. I can't even take her to the vet because she acts up so much in the car (barking at EVERYTHING we pass, be it people, dogs, houses, lamp posts, street signs, overpasses - she HATES overpasses) and she's really loud and distracting, so I avoid getting her into the car at all costs. My vet suggested I give her 3 Bennadryl's and try bringing her then and see if she's calmer. I bought the Bennadryl's, but haven't tried it yet, maybe I will try it tonight. I will probably try to clip her nails myself and see what happens. If she tries to fight it too much, the vet said she'd prescribe a sedative to get her to calm down in the car.
Cleaning her nails is a different story, she's very good about that. She's also very good in the tub... I have no idea why, but she is, thankfully!!!

I think my dog is half German Shepard and he does the same thing. Its the only time that he wants to mess me up is when the clippers come out.

Some dogs develop this behavior as part of a neurosis. It can be hard to stop if this is the case, but stuff like regular walks through unfamiliar areas coupled with physical play at home does wonders for canine mental health.

Dogs are sometimes very possessive with their paws... my mom's dog is 1/2 shepherd and she is the most passive, sweet, and sensitive animal EVER... but even she will pull her paws away if I even touch them to pet them.
Stasha might be really aggressive, but she lets me touch her paws and pet them all the time. She doesn't mind until the clippers make their appearance.
Incidentally... why do dog clippers suck so bad? The thing that gets my dog is the way it jerks her nail in a weird direction when they actually clip. And they're never sharp enough. I definitely place some blame on shitty clipper technology here.

Your dog probably had its claws clipped way too close before, and it hurt immensely. Like Syriana-type of nail pain.
You dog may be possessive with it's claws, and is constantly trying to clean them. Then again, maybe it is a "Lion with a splinter in the paw" type of situation. Maybe the dog has something buried deep under a nail like a rock, or maybe a doggie hang nail.

My dog is a shepherd mix and she pulls her paws away too when I try to touch them. She also does the non stop licking thing. Most of the time she's licking her....area....and even when we say stop or even try to pull her head away she doesnt.
My chow bites and licks his paws all the time and we just recently found out that it's because he is in pain because he has bad hips.
I'd def talk to your vet.

HAHAHAAH!! ME TOO!!
Don't get me wrong, I love getting kisses and all. But my lil puppy bulldog licks the chair while I'm sitting on it and it drives me batshit crazy! I have no idea why, but it does. She also licks the bathroom door while I'm in there, and that drives me so crazy I want to run out the bathroom and I don't care if I make a huge mess.
CRAZY, I TELL YOU!!!

9 times out of 10 most dogs chew/lick their body, stretch, sneeze, and do any other little thing as a part of stress
maybe it's time for a bath with a good brand-name pet shampoo.
when drying her off, check the legs closely for redness/rash/fleas.. anything abnormal...

Maybe she's got really dry skin?
Add some bacon to her diet and see if that helps.

It may be that she is allergic to something in her food or in her shampoo, my sister has a dog that licked its paws a lot and come to find out the dog was allergic to something in the dog food. You can give dogs Benedryl but I would ask the vet before doing that because it depends on the dogs weight yadda yadda yadda. At least you don't have a butt licking puggle, my dog is in love with his own ass, it's really gross.

My puppy has been licking an extreme amount too. I always joke about how she waits till she's lying on me to start licking her stuff.
