Please take a moment today to think about and remember those that the day is set aside to honor. They gave their lives for all of us.

Memorial Day is a day unlike any other. Since 1868, we have come together in our communities to place flowers and flags on graves of our fallen heroes and come together in services to honor those who have paid the ultimate price in the name of freedom.
For whether a war is popular or not, the sacrifice is the same for the more than one million men and women who died in service of this nation in wars and conflicts since 1775.
Americans must remember that freedom is not free. It is only possible because our fallen heroes have paid its high price. Let us not lose focus of what Memorial Day means; it is a day to remember.
To our fallen heroes on this Memorial Day, we are in your debt and we thank you. May God bless them and this great nation of ours.

'When the bombs dropped and news began to circulate that the invasion of Japan would not, after all, take place, that we would not be obliged to run up the beaches near Tokyo assault-firing while being mortared and shelled, for all the fake manliness of our facades we cried with relief and joy. We were going to live. We were going to grow up to adulthood after all.'
-Army Veteran/writer Paul Fussell
'Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children... This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.'

I struggle with the 'happy' prefix, because it's a day to remember those who have fallen in service to this country, both at home and abroad.
I suppose we can be happy that their sacrifices proved fruitful; that we live in freedom and safety today because of their loss.
I want everyone to enjoy their day today; it's gorgeous out there and most of you are off work. I'd want everyone to enjoy such a day regardless of the date. But it is Memorial Day, so please do take a moment, or two, to remember the dead, and perhaps ponder where we'd be/what we'd be doing if it wasnt for them.

Happy Memorial Day To All Vets! Thanks for the service!!
My one Grandad's brother Everrett got killed at The Battle Of The Bulge.
His other brother Arthur(passed away last year) served under Gen Patton in North Africa, Italy, and France. General Patton awarded him a Silver Star for "gallantry in action at El Quettar"
Turns out Everrett and Patton are buried not far from each other in Luxembourg Cemetery
For 25 years the people of Luxembourg invited the family's of the Veterans who lay 'in this cemetary' into their homes to stay as they visited their loved one, as a gesture of gratitude. My grandparents did make that visit.

memorial day should not be "Happy", it should be a day of refection and for remembrance of those who have sacrificed so that we can all be free to live our lives as we desire
sadly the day has become a holiday known for "beach day" and hot dogs,
today as I do once a month, every month..I spent 7 hours at a forgotten cemetery where ownership has decided to not cut grass and keep the place respectable, I help the locals all cut and maintain the place so that all who are buried there can be in a place of honor, not disgrace
I am sure there are cemeteries in the same condition close to where you all live, but all too often, out of sight out of mind in a world of self centrist that we are all too accustomed to
ask any teen what memorial day is and the majority would say a party and a day off from school...which is sad
remember, memorial day is the day we honor those who have died protecting our freedoms
veterans day is the day we honor all those who have served in the armed forces protecting the united states of america

just got back from the calverton national cemetery out on long island. we drove my grandmother out there to visit the graves of my grandfather and my grandmother's brother. my grandfather served 5 years during ww2, in africa and italy. i can't imagine what that time just waiting was like for my grandmother. her brother served tours in ww2 and korea.
we couldn't have asked for a nicer day for the trip.
thanks to all you veterans.

Usually I bitch about people and businesses flying the flag at half mast when it's inappropriate. This time it's the opposite. As I drove around town today, I saw only TWO flags at half mast for Memorial Day. Both of them were at McDonalds. And this includes the local National Guard post AND our memorial for fallen soldiers! I would think Memorial Day would be the absolute most important day to be observing proper flag etiquette!

my family is full of army and navy soldiers... and i am grateful for how they served/are serving their country every day.
this year i had a good friend in Baghdad to think about too...
and i can honestly say that watching the Band of Brothers marathon on saturday was the best part of my weekend. remembering in any way we can is the best way to honor the day.
