It's been said a zillion times but it's true and because it's SO true i can't fucking understand how old people are still allowed to drive.

I was on my way to work this morning, i take Route 18 and my exit is shortly before Rutgers.

So, these u-turns aren't very sharp but they can be longer than an average u-turn. I was barely halfway into the u-turn when the car infront of me completely spins until it is almost facing me head on.

I was fucking shocked, like i couldn't believe that could happen IN A U-TURN! This old bat wasn't even going fast and it wasn't raining at all, what the fuck?

I am angry thinking about it now because god forbid a car behind me came off Route 18 fast enough that he couldn't slow down and I got hit, or if i wasn't able to stop short while her car spun out?

I wish old people were made of quicksand, this way they would die faster.

bald tires and a just rained on road, shit happens.

i think worse then that is how fucking slow they drive in the right lane on highways, as people are trying to merge on.

A good friend of mine's a cop in a suburban town. He said one day he was sitting around eating donuts when he got a call of a certain vehicle involved in a hit and run.

As he was about to speed over to the scene, he saw the vehicle described puttering right in front of him, going about 15 mi/h. He pulled it over and saw that the windshield was shattered and the entire front of the car totaled. The driver was an 87 year old women and he asked why she had fled the scene. She was in complete denial of the fact that she was in an accident and that her windshield was gone.

She lost her license, but it shouldn't take crazy incidents like that to make it happen.

What an ass... she just lost her lisence? No jail or anything?

Just as many teens driving just as bad.

Worse, actually.

that is true but those teens recently passed a test to drive. i think the same should hold true for people past the age of 65. once you reach a specific old age you should be forced to re-test for your license and if you pass then god bless, enjoy the road. otherwise get the hell off and make the roads safer for everybody.

The only way old people should be on the road is if they're the fuel that makes the cars run.

My Grandma ran into another oldie who was crossing in the crosswalk, cracking her entire windshield open as she knocked the lady into her car going 15mph.

She played the scared little old lady card with the cops and just had to pay some fines. She then told me "that old hag should have moved it faster". She finally stopped driving voluntarily after plowing into a toll booth.

Grandpa hauled gravel in trucks until he was 72 and single handedly shut down the tappan zee bridge by accidentally dumping the gravel right at the start of the bridge.

That made me laugh so hard they should be allowed to keep driving.

If they're alive.

Hopefully.

They drive slow as hell and they don't look before backing up, merging, changing lanes, or anything like that. Awful awful.

I live off of a pretty busy road, two lanes going both ways. I saw they were opening a large apartment complex a few blocks down right on the main road (which is super dangerous to pull in and off of). I did not think much of it until they put the sign up:

SENIORS COMPLEX 55+! RENTALS AVAILABLE NOW!

IT'S GOING TO BE A FREAKING NIGHTMARE! Oldies trying to merge in and out of that road, going 5mph and blocking traffic.

its actually amazing the amount of senior complexes i have seen being built/opened in Jersey and LI.

I may be a little dyslexic, but I read the title of this thread as Old People and Diving... I was pretty confused by what the problem was there.

was in a diner last week with my uncle and a man i would guess in his mid to late 70's was getting dizzy and losing his balance. he almost went down before i got up to hold him up and eventually got him seated in a chair. he was about 6'2 and he wasn't light, maybe 240...

in the chair he was almost fainting, in and out. a nurse who was there with her young child came over and took his pulse.

the man's wife supposedly called 911 or an EMT. i sat back down with my uncle and kept an eye on the man. a minute or two passes, he slowly gets up and walks out of the diner. next thing you know he pulls up with his car and his wife gets in and they take off...

old people are bad drivers. i work in an old folks' home, and they crash their walkers and scooters into each other. i don't trust them driving cars.

however, i would say that there are plenty of younger folk on cell phones that are just as bad, if not worse. i was stuck on a narrow street while a girl on a cell phone held her phone in one hand while performing a k-turn in front of me. it took her about 6 iterations of forward and reverse before she finished. my constant car-horn throughout the whole process may not have helped, but hopefully it disrupted her conversation.

smoking is another problem (i smoke, but not while driving). the driver looks away from the road to ash a cigarette or kill it in the ashtray, and they swerve while doing it.

i would rank cell phones and smoking-while-driving as the most frequent causes of near-accidents or overall driving nuisances that i've experienced.

My friend's already been given two tickets from NJ's new cell phone law. He complains that he can't afford the $500+ in tickets he has to pay, and HATES when I point out that a bluetooth only costs about $30.

if old people weren't allowed to drive then i'm pretty sure buick would be out of business in a matter of hours.

Today some old bat decided to change lanes where I was. Good thing I was alert and saw her coming and just moved into the next lane over. My next car will be a tank so I can run them all over.

Me too. Too fucking funny. The story about your Grandma reminded me of that episode of The Sopranos when Livia ran over her friend.

As a septuagenarian, I can honestly say that most of the elderly do tend to lose vision and hearing gradually, which may lead to some problems behind the wheel.

However, please remember that those of us with our wits about us may actually still be better drivers (and better lovers) than some of you whipper snappers!

And I do support re-testing, for the record.

Just make it a rule to take it every ten years so not to discriminate. Make it an option to take it online, that way the elderly will be forced to take it in person.

i'd be in favor of that if it was a limited version of the original test. like no need for parallel parking and silliness like that.

Or just make it written, and if you fail the written, then you have to take the driving part over again as well.

might work, but i don't know that loss of knowledge is the prob as much as deterioration of motor skills.

Make the text on the test real small.
