Following test-screenings of her debut film, Crossroads, Britney Spears has been forced to reshoot certain scenes.
The scenes involved Britney in various states of undress. The film was to have opened with Spears dancing around in her bedroom dressed in her underwear. Britney then skips down the stairs semi-naked and embarrasses her father, played by Dan Akroyd. Now the scene has been re-cut with Britney wearing her school uniform instead. In another scene, the star was originally filmed in her underwear preparing to go to bed with a man she has picked up in a bar. The scene has now been reshot with Britney wearing a shirt.
Spears, who celebrated her 20th birthday last week, has given herself five years to make her name in Hollywood. She partly paid for the financing of Crossroads out of her own personal fortune. In the film Britney plays Lucy, a poor white girl who drives across America with two female schoolfriends and a hijacked male to be reunited with her mother in Los Angeles. Along the way, there are comic incidents and hilarious mayhem.
Some of Britney's lines have also been cut in order to concentrate more on her screen mother, played by Sex and the City TV star Kim Catrall.
Audiences at test screenings held over the past few weeks in New York and California have complained that even at a relatively short 105 minutes, the film went on for too long. The film, described by its director as a comedy about growing up is part of Britney's long term plan to become a movie star. She will follow up Crossroads with a cameo appearance in the forthcoming Austin Powers 3 film, Goldmember. Britney has also been approached to play a small part in the film adaptation of the musical Chicago with Kevin Kline, Ren‚e Zellweger, Richard Gere and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The makers of Crossroads insist the film is still in 'rough form' and is not intended as the final print. 'It is unfair to make judgments from this because it is a work in progress,' said a studio executive. 'Changes will be part of the process of making a great Britney movie for release in February. She will sing, dance and cavort in skimpy clothes, just like her fans expect her to do.'
If she remakes the Clapton song for the soundtrack...I will have to get the big knife.
