Look at the soil around Des Moines. You can't build on it. You can't grow anything. The government says it's due to poor farming. But I know it's the queers. They're in it with the aliens. I don't think he's criticizing the benefits, he's criticizing the people who are taking it as the latest fad, who will be obsessed with furniture or something else in 5 years.
I remember back in 1990, people decided the 90's were going to be the 'environmental' decade. Everyone was recycling, and, um, not much else. Years later, there are recycling bins at my job, but it's pretty much assumed that the cleaning folks just put it all in the same dumpster at the end of the day...

Hey! A fellow Marylander! Hiya!
I don't know, He sounded pretty down by saying "There is no such thing as a Green Building". I can point him to 5 quick examples of building and homes that were designed and built that not only do not contribute to any environmental erosion, but actually create a surplus of energy that is sold back to the grid.
Fad-ism plays a huge role in the cycles of history, but I would like to give the "helpful" fads the benefit of the doubt to keep them catching on as long as possible!
Mike was just saying before that he sees a dearth of science being discussed in the presidential debates, but what could be more important scientifically than the preservation of our own planet?
Well, since my daughter has Spina Bifida, I would say Stem Cell research is more important, but that's just me being selfish! ;)

Here's a link to the Vertical Farming concept I called in about towards the end:
Vertical Farming (http://www.verticalfarm.com/). In other words, the entire building is self-sustaining and produces its own food, energy, and stores its own water. It's all the brainchild of Dickson Despommier, a Columbia professor. It addresses the humanitarian, ecological, and environmental problems that will be caused by urbanization in the future. Like I said today, the whole thing sounds a little too good to be true, but it shows some promise.

Wow that building looks like a giant hydroponic pot grower. Nice!
To clarify my often unclear ramblings. By 'there are no green buildings' I was responding to companies who claim they are 'going green' and that somehow that means the building is now good for the environment. In the cases where a few steps are taken, the building just becomes a bit less wasteful. Wonderful! But these companies, for me, try to sell this as a positive when its really less of a negative.
Now, buildings that actually give back to the environment, awesome. If they exist, awesome. But a net positive = the entire building, its manufacture and maintenance included, will net a positive to the environment, for the life of the building. That means it consumes waste, doesnt make it, it doesnt produce CO2, better yet absorbs it, it doesnt generate excess heat. It has zero water waste, better yet, it makes it own water. To me thats a Green building. One where the entire life of the building had a net enviromental gain instead of a cost.

City Center in Las Vegas is being built entirely around the Sustainable and Green guidelines.
A hugely expensive undertaking, as the requirements and upkeep of this commitment are great and closely monitored.
