In this image made available Thursday May 29, 2008, from Survival International, showing 'uncontacted Indians' of the Envira, who have never before had any contact with the outside world, photographed during an overflight in May 2008, as they react to the overflight at their camp in the Terra Indigena Kampa e Isolados do Envira, Acre state, Brazil, close to the border with Peru. 'We did the overflight to show their houses, to show they are there, to show they exist,' said uncontacted tribes expert Jos

"Uncontacted" Amazon Tribe Actually Known for Decades (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/06/080619-uncontacted-tribe.html)

A few things are known about the enigmatic people, Meirelles said.

They have shaved foreheads but long hair. They plant cotton—or perhaps find it growing in the jungle—and spin it into cloth for skirts.

For the men, the women make cotton belts and headbands. They also make hammocks that are strung below huts covered by thick, thatched-palm roofs.

"They are agriculturalists," Meirelles said. "They have big fields, and they grow cassava, maize, almonds, pumpkin, and various types of potato, papaw, yams, and banana."

Ahhh the simple life.

I'm confused as to how there are still people like this in the world...

The part on national geographic says:

"Many indigenous-rights advocates see such groups as under threat from oil, gas, and logging interests that covet in the Indians' resource-rich homelands."

I can understand that, but it also says they've known about this tribe since 1910 and they have not made contact with them... to which I say, why? There are actually still people who will see a plane and assume it's a giant shiny bird? Amazing.

I think the Tsembaga tribe to be the most interesting example of isolated culture on our planet. Anthropologist Roy Rappaport studied them in the 60's, before which they were relatively uncontacted (and I think legally protected from contact by the New Guinea government). The value of their culture and Rappaport's study of it was their remarkable system of rotating agriculture. They were able to live in a small area ( a few square miles) and support a much higher population than the amount of land should have supported. We would do well to get away from the destructive monoculture we embrace and adopt some of their practices.

I'm surprised this is just being talked about today. They announced on the day that this story broke, that the government had been monitoring them for decades. As to why they don't contact them, they said that sort of thing almost never turns out well for the tribes.

A Savage Hoax: The Cave Men Who Never Existed (http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/080625-tasaday-hoax.html)

Ahh the days you could whip up a "lost tribe" and then skip town...

Elizalde had convinced local villagers to pretend to live in caves, in return for promises of money and aid. In fact, the local villagers who pretended to be Tasaday got little in return. Elizalde, the architect of the Tasaday hoax, skipped town in the early 1980s with a reported $35 million and a harem of teenage girls. He died at the age of 60 in 1997, ending the saga of another "lost tribe."

Sad story of a tribe with only 5 members left.

Genocide of an ancient Amazon tribe (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10604375)

Brazil's indigenous Akuntsu tribe has been whittled to only five members after the group's oldest, Urur, died.

The ancient Amazonian tribe a generation ago boasted several hundred members, but has effectively been destroyed by a tragic mixture of hostility and neglect.

The survivors represent all that is left of a once-vibrant civilisation which had its own religion and language, and only made contact with modern Brazil towards the end of last century.

Noooooo! They are inferior brown people and cannot fend for themselves. That's why I'm proposing we build a protected area around them. There will be an observational deck where food can be purchased to feed the tribesmen. A qualified medical team will be on site and once weekly sleeping gas will be introduced into the Tribe-O-Pod so that the tribe's medical needs can be tended to without any knowledge of the outside world being imparted on their precious, yet primitive and vulnerable culture.

Peru Releases Dramatic Footage of Uncontacted Indians (http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2011/10/18/peru-releases-new-video-of-uncontacted-indians/)

The Peruvian government has released dramatic new footage showing a near-encounter with a group of uncontacted Indians along a riverbank in the Amazon rain forest. The video was taken by travelers on the Manu River in southeastern Peru in recent months, according to officials from Peru’s Ministry of the Environment, who released the images on Monday.

In the video, travelers appear to be playing a game of cat and mouse with the naked tribesmen, drifting close to shore only to flee in panic in their motorboat as the natives approach. Some of the Indians brandish bows and arrows, and at one moment, one of them prepares to launch an arrow at the boat. The travelers are heard debating among themselves whether to approach, whether to back off, and if they should leave gifts of food or clothing on the shore for the Indians to take.
