(I know this is in That's Life, but feel free to make fun of me)

I called my boss last night because shit just hasn't seemed right with him towards me lately. He was busy but told me he'd call me Sunday (today). I asked him I was worried I'd get fired and he answered with "We'll talk tomorrow." So I've been a nervous wreck for 24hrs. I don't handle stress or change well, so I've just been freaking out. He finally called me today and told me he was laying me off.

So, I knew something was up for a little while. My boss has been trying to sell our business and he keeps getting buyers backing out. We deliver lost luggage and its the slowest its ever been (other than around 9/11), and he's just losing tons of money, supposedly. I run the company, so obviously I make the most money, so I'm the first to go. I've been sort of looking for a new job for the last year or so anyway, so its not like I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. I feel a lot better now that I've talked to him, though. Not knowing sucks. Now I know. Its easier to deal, or something like that.

He gave me a pretty decent severance package and was very kind to me, he just did what he had to do. The worst part of it is that I have a company car, and I made my June payment for parking ($325) TODAY. I'm going to try to get out of that somehow. Oh, and we're moving in a month and then going on vacation 4 days later. Need moneyz.

And to top it all off, my television has been broken for a month and on Friday the replacement television finally came. With a hole straight through the screen. So now I have no big tv to play on while unemployed. This weekend sucked balls.

My wife says this whole thing is good, though, and I kind of agree. I finally get the kick in the ass I needed to actually find a good career. I've been struggling finding a job as my work experience (and my resume) makes it look like I'd ask for too much money or leave the job to find something more enticing. I'm "overqualified" for everything I apply for. Boo.

This will be what you make it, and it sounds like you'll make this a positive with a very supportive wife. Good luck UD.

If you are over qualified for all you apply for then 'dumb down' your resume a bit... or aim high and go for those positions you know you can be the best at.

Obviously this is a akward time for you; there's a whole lot of uncertainty right now. I can't give you some bullshit hype just to make you feel better, but I can give you a summery of my story and how it relates to you...

In October '06 I handed in my resignation from a company I was working with for the previous 5 years. I was comfortable there but knew I was better than that and I needed challenge in my life. My official resignation day was October 18, I called my 'new' employer that day and found out the position was no longer there because they lost the contract I was going to fill. Pride and desire for betterment wouldn't let me go and ask for my job back, so I continued on like I had a new job.... For 3 months I sat at home applying for every job I could find (construction) all the while knowing I had to get my sorry ass into a safety position. I finally did in February '07, because my brother played a hand of poker with a guy and the pot was huge and down to my bro and another dude. The agreement was that if my bro folded I would get hired.... My bro folded.

Shortly after I was on a plane to Fort McMurray, AB starting on a new career... One year later I am making 4 times what I was making at my last job, and I am constantly getting offers for upwards of $57.00/ hour with $4700 Living Allowance (tax free).

I had a scare for a short while and now I have earned a name for myself and respect in the health and safety profession amongst my peers. Not to mention the complete honour of working for the biggest crane company in the world.

I, like you are afraid of the unknown and afraid of change. Sometimes we go through changes, difficulties and uncertainty to get ourselves grounded and to find out what we really want... and how bad we want it.

Don't get discouraged, shoot for what you know you can be the best at and don't short change yourself.

It might take a while, it might be immediate... but you'll be alright.

But yeah, get that parking money back.

I was about to jump on a plane to come to NYC shortly after I heard... I was going to offer my services to the city pro bono.

Then I realized I had no passport and was afraid of NY.

Yeah, I've started doing that, but I think I might have dumbed it down too much. I need to make it in the middle.

And I've been waiting to hear back about an Air Traffic Control job, so it could all change real soon anyway.

A multi million dollar business. And we just service Logan. The companies that do JFK and ATL are fucking enormous. I had drivers that make $3-4k a week during the summer and holiday seasons just driving around and putting bags on people's doorsteps.

Working in this business for 10 years, I can tell you never pack anything you might need. Carry it on.

Oh, and if the airline loses your bag and you think telling the dispatcher at the delivery service that you need your bag because it has "medication in it" will get you your bag quicker, it won't. In fact, we'll make sure it takes longer.

QFT. I've gotten to the point where I don't carry toiletries with me outside of a toothbrush and toothpaste, because I'll buy everything on-site when I get there.

I have a habit of over-packing, which I need to stop doing.

Don't worry, the airlines will make you stop. Most of them charge for a 2nd bag or anything over 50lbs now. AA charges for your first bag.

Who pays your company to have these "lost bags" delivered, the airlines?

I pretty much only fly continental. and yes, the overpacking will stop. I realize that bags are too heavy and I'm packing for places where I can easily buy stuff I didn't bring with me.

Yeah. If you fly in and your bag doesn't come in on your flight, the airline pays to have your bag delivered to you.

That sucks, sorry to hear. Hope things turn around, at least you got the severance. I was at a job once where they laid off according to seniority. I was next on the list, ready to get my severance (week's pay for every year with the company, I had 5). The following week they fired me, said I was drinking on the job, and surfing the net for porn, which was all bullshit.

Sorry, I know that was corny..I really feel awful about the whole thing, but having such an awsome woman in your corner puts you way ahead of the game..

I know that things will improve for you very soon, but you, like me are a Red Sox fan so sacrificing something as trivial as a steady source of income to the baseball gods is a small price to pay for another title..

I'll start praying for you and your TV imeadiately since niether one of you work..That always helps, I'm good with God..

Best of luck brother..Now go watch Rocky 1 2 & 3 and get your ass in gear..I have all the faith in the world that you will land on your feet..

I have an update, as if anyone cares.

I went in for my first real interview on Thursday at 5p and got a phone call tonight at 9:30p telling me I got the job.

It was the first time I ever was relaxed in an interview. And when I left, I totally knew I got the job. It was such an awesome feeling.
