dont chew the gum too fast. you will get a stomach ache and head ache and not be able to sleep. you have to do as directed and chew a few times and then slide the gum between check and gum for a bit. try to chew it before the nic fit kicks in too hard.
good luck.

Whatever you do, stick with it. You'll be fine and trust me, in a year you'll be so fucking happy that you quit.
It's been 3 years for me and I was a committed 2 pack a day man, and I can't imagine how I ever smoked now. You will definitely get there.
You won't be happy if you slip and have one. It won't be worth it. You'll hate it and you'll hate yourself for doing it. You had the guts to quit, now don't quit on yourself.
Whatever you need to do to keep yourself going, do it. If you need Chantix, go get it. I've heard great things. If the gum isn't doing it for you, get the patch. I used the patch and it worked for me, because it took away the nicotine jones, and all I had to deal with was the habit.
I think that's the hardest part: the physical habit. The going in the other room, or outside and actually doing it. Having to mentally fight your mind automatically assuming that it's time for a smoke, because that's how you've been doing it for years. The sooner you stop thinking that way, the sooner you'll be over the hump.
You are going to succeed!
PS. Marc with a C is an asswack.

Been 5 months for me now, but I dip, so I guess I cheat? I did use the gum for a while, used the 4mg. Sometimes it would have a burning sensation, sometimes it wouldn't. I actually looked forward to a piece that would give me the burning sensation because that's the only time it felt satisftying. Maybe I had a half dipped batch.

Hang in there and don't have one. You'll want one for a long time to come but you'll want one a little less every day. If you have then you haven't quit and you're back to square one...still a smoker. You'll feel better mentally and physically if you hang in there. My ol lady used the Chantix and will be a year clean on the 22nd. Try sunflower seeds or chewing on a pen or something benign like that. Good luck, bro.
Today is day 4 for me - no cigarettes and no coffee. I knew I had to give up the java or else I'd never quit the smokes. It's torture, but I'm hanging in there.

I've got the nicorette gum, but I've mainly been chewing sugarless gum instead.
And I quit just for the hell of it. I set aside June 1st as the date and said I was going to quit coffee and cigs for three months. Hopefully when Sept. 1 rolls around I won't want to go back.

quitting has been something i've been thinking about for a while now. i just found out that my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. they caught it really early, so he has a good prognosis, but just hearing about the c-word is enough to get me thinking of quitting sooner rather than later.
the extra $1 tax that NY just put on each pack makes me angery though. i don't want to quit for financial reasons! in fact, i almost want to keep smoking, just to show that the only-rich-people-can-smoke extortion tactics of the insurance industry that keep raping smokers in NY is not gonna affect my legal choice to smoke!
best of luck for those who are currently quitting...

Jughead, Devo, seriously, as someone who was a hardcore 2 packs a day smoker I try hard not to be one of the self righteous smug assholes that I hated when I smoked. I used to tell people that cigarettes made me run faster. I was in for the long haul.
And whatever. Something happened in my life and I decided to quit for the millionth time and actually did it. It's been 3 years and it feels great and I can't imagine ever smoking again.
So just do this: sit down and figure out what you would use to quit. The gum, the patch, the Chantix. Whatever. I used the patch and I did it the whole way, but whatever works for you. Then go out and buy those things. It doesn't mean you've quit today, but you've moved a little closer to it.
You could also go cold turkey like GVAC, but remember, he shot a man just to watch him die.

Completely true!!!!
I quit completely cold turkey after trying it a bunch of other times and it's been... 4 years? Maybe 3 1/2.
But see. i quit and can't even remember how long it's been since I had a cigg.
Good luck man, and seriously stick to it!!! I'm rootin' for ya!!!

Cut open a nicotine patch. There is some jelly type stuff that slowly enters your system. Every time you want a smoke, use that jelly to masturbate. Pleasure plus a raging nicotine high.

Well, I cracked yesterday.
It was the single worst day I had at work in the year I've been working there.
A million screw ups, my customers calling my cell all day screaming, me in turn screaming at the dispatcher, the inside sales force, and my drivers. About 1:15 in the afternoon I pulled into a Stewart's in upstate New York and bought a coffee and a pack of smokes.
I wasn't happy about it, but I didn't beat myself up over it either.
Monday morning I'll try again.

Has anyone here used Chantix? I was thinking about getting that from my Dr. when I go for my routine maintenance this week (you know where he tells me I am chubby and I could lose a few pounds and I tell him that I have my mother to tell me I am fat for free?) anyway I have heard some conflicting information about Chantix where about half of the people who have taken it or know someone who has taken it said that it worked great and after a couple months they had completely quit and then there are about half of the people that say that it has some creepy side effects. I really would like to quit but I always come up with an excuse and it never seems to be the right time. Good luck Gvac..and don't worry about slipping up...we are all only human.

Admire your honesty.
Our behaviours remind us that we really have almost no control over many if not most parts of ourselves. Sounds weird, until we try to quit something, or learn something, and we come out of our automatic habits, or day to day selves, and a pointed stick appears, and reminds us that things are not what they seem, we really dont crontrol these creatures we inhabit. We think we do, we usually feel like we do, but we lose control constantly.
For me, at least.

Been using the patch pretty regularly for the last 6 (?) weeks.....tremendous results....have bought a pack here and there when uber-stressed (and left the house without a patch), but in just that short time, i feel much much healthier.
I may wear the patch long term.....whatever. No real health concerns compared to smoking.

I started smoking when i was about 12 (1967). I have only ever smoked non filter PALL MALL) By the time I was 18, I was smoking 2 packs a day (my private catholic high let us do it. In collge (1969 - 1979) we smoked in the classroom, we just had to sit by the window. All this time, therewas no serious public health programs wrning about the hazards.
When I was 21 I quit - cold turkey because it was affecting ny running. I satayed clean for about 10 years until i got divorsed and started drininking in earnest and smoking too.
I finally quit again about three and half years ago. i still want to smoke every day. My currant wife smokes right in front of me. I think my days are numbered.

My grandmother smoked non filterd Pall Mall's she didn't die from lung cancer she died from lupus which isn't caused by smoking but the dr. said it didn't really help. You see so many people who smoke that don't develop lung cancer like the really really old people and you have to wonder if it's just one of those genetic things or what. I am always trying to justify my smoking habit. I have a dr. appt tomorrow and I am thinking about trying the Chantix but I am still a little leary of that because I am half nuts and bitchy now and I have heard that it makes you very irritable and I just don't know if the world could stand me being a bigger bitch. :innocent:

I quit 8 years ago (pack or so a day of Lucky Strikes), and used a method similar to Gvac's. I had to give up coffee and alcohol since those two in my mind were automatically associated with a cigarette. After stopping those two things for a few weeks I switched brands. First to filtered cigarettes, then to lights, then to generic lights. By this point I realized that there were only 2 cigarettes during the day I truly enjoyed. One when waking up, and one after dinner.
The taste of the generic lights was like smoking paper at this point, so I bought a box of toothpicks and stopped completely. After about a year, I resumed coffee and alcohol when I felt comfortable I wouldn't want a cigarette. It worked.
That being said, there is always a moment once in a while where I'd love to stuff a whole pack of Luckies in my mouth and light the end on fire.
One thing I have noticed after quitting... I get sick much more often and my allergies have gotten worse. Coincidence?
Good luck to all of those that are trying to break the habit.

You started, right?
Just stop. Force yourself to just stop. How in the hell can an adult let something like a cigarette have this much control?
Pardon the rhetorical, but c'mon, man. I'm not trying to be difficult here and I think you can do it----so do it. Quit that is.
Good luck!!!
