Ok. So here's my story. My friend Dave was in town last week and I haven't seen him in two years so I wanted to spend some time with him. I grew up with him and always knew he was somewhat of a truth stretcher, but this one takes the cake. A few of us decided to have dinner with Dave on Friday night and I took off from work to go. We planned on meeting up at six. I got a call from Dave at 4:30 and he told me the traffic in NY was horrendous because of a crane falling. He told me it took him 45 min to go two blocks (from West 10th to Bleecker) and that he would be leaving the city later than he thought, perhaps around 6 or 7. He didn't meet up with us until 11pm.
Sounds like an honest story, right? Well the crane fell about 85 blocks away north and across town, and when I mentioned that to him he told me that another crane fell that day closer to where he was. Now, I now that cranes have been falling in NY lately, but two in one day? Of course when I looked it up there was only one crane that fell. I knew he was full of shit and felt foolish for even looking it up.
What is it with people that tell outlandish lies so easily when they could easily just tell the truth? :annoyed:

Does this "Dave" you speak of also claim to have been born in Central Jersey, although his town is clearly in SOUTH Jersey?

He probably just thought he'd roll the dice and that there was a good chance another one would fall that day.
Anyway, ALL your friends are insane, Dave seems the least insane!
And I want to add that I've been lying to my parents this way since I was a kid... but they're the only ones I can lie to without batting an eye. I wouldn't even consider lying to other people that way.

haha. that Dave doesn't lie so much as speak complete nonsense. I think you have to be aware of the truth in order to truly be lying.

I would LOVE to say yes, but all my friends are lesbians, so I'm keeping quiet on this one.

When I was in college, there were two guys who were the world's biggest liars. The first guy, who I knew, had the following "stories" for us:
His dad was a surgeon (which I think was true), and one day let him watch the surgery, and even close up the patient when it was finished.
He went to Italy, and met the pope in a private meeting
Once he was in South America, and killer bees were after him, and he only saved himself by diving in some water.
The second kid claimed to be Kelsey Grammar's son. He made it to his senior year, and then half way through the year admitted to someone at school (can't remember if it was a friend, date, roommate, etc.) that he was not Kelsey Grammar's son, and oh yeah, he faked all of his admission documents, including school records, letters of recommendation, etc. The person ratted him out and the kid was kicked out before graduating.

I used to call him out on that kinda stuff, but it's been so long that i've seen him and probably will be a while before I'll see him again. Not a good excuse, but I decided to let it go and chalk it up to same old Dave bullshit.

The funny thing about this is that Dave lives in LA with his girlfriend who works very closely with Woody Harrelson. He said he hung out with him all the time. I never believed that was the truth until I went out there, since he lies so much.

People like that amaze me. It's a revolting amazement, but I would still love to know the HOW and the WHY they would create such a lie.
I knew a girl in college who wasn't even enrolled. She lived with other girls, and pretended to go to class... even getting up for early ones. Bought books and everything. Come graduation, no where to be seen. She had dropped out junior year. WTF?

Wow... Creepy! I lied to a girl about having a boyfriend when I was in 7th grade and everytime I've seen her since then she always brings up how she was so jealous I had a boyfriend, and how cool that was, and how she still has the note I wrote it in!?? So embarassing... And now it's way WAY too late to tell her. Might be why to this day I don't feel very comfortable telling lies.
By the way, when this girl brings this up in front of other friends who know this whole story... Hysterical! I have to try so hard not to laugh.

Maybe lying is just about seeming cooler or more interesting. That reminds me. That same night of the crane incident Dave had his ipod on him and when asked if it was the 160gb he said yes. My other friend insisted on putting some of his music on Dave's ipod and as Dave handed it to him he said "well maybe it's not the 160gb". It turned out to be a 30gb. What a douche!

My exgirlfriend would lie about everything. She would lie about where she was, what she did, who she had dated. She wanted to cover up the fact that she was a pathetic, dull, introvert who had done nothing with her life. Then when I called her on everything she told me she couldnt believe I had doubted her. Then slowly she admitted that (almost) everything was a lie. There were still certain things she would lie to me about ("I would never lie to you about that!") and only admitted to it after we broke up.
The best part was,, everyone she knew told me that they knew she lied about shit all along! This girl thought she had everyone going.
The worst part was................ I knew she lied about shit for a while before I said anything.
And then she told chicks I was friends with that I had an anger management issues.
What a nut case:furious:
In conclusion.......... I sympathize Boom Boom. I had my own "Dave" the only difference was that I fucked her a bunch of times

people that lie for no reason make no sense to me, especially when they're not good at it!
it would've been easy enough for your friend to say he got caught in traffic, or make up a lie that wasn't in the headlines ("there was a bad accident, and the police had the street closed...").
i work with a guy who has a kid that he doesn't have custody of. normally, he never mentions the kid, and he's not the most mature, fatherly person i know. yet, every time he wants to take a day off from work (usually a Friday) and needs someone to cover his shift, he makes up a lie about "it's my son's birthday" or "i need to take my son to the doctor" or some other lie that the rest of us know is just pure bullsh!t. if he just said he needed someone to cover his shift, someone would volunteer, if only to get the overtime pay. there's no need for the stupid lies!!!
one time, he took a 4-day-weekend with the lie of "my brother got shot, and i need to be with him at the hospital." he came to work the following monday with a golden tan, and no one has ever heard him mention having a brother either before or after the 'shooting'.

That's the thing with Dave. Everybody that I know that's close to him knows he's lying and I'm pretty sure he thinks we don't know.

Back in the 80's I worked at a photo lab that was interviewing for a new assistant manager. The guy we hired had just moved here from CO. with his girlfriend and her family. He told us about how he had a great hatred for drunk drivers, because a year before, one had killed his parents and his only sister. We didn't hire him because of the story, but it had a huge effect on how we thought about the guy, since it was such a terrible story.
About 6 months later, his girlfriend graduated from high school (he was two years older). She came to the lab and showed us a new purse and said, "Look what Rick's parents gave me for graduation". We were all stunned. We told her what Rick had told us about his family when he first met us. She was shocked. She said his parents and sister were all perfectly fine, and still living in CO.
The weird part is, this guy was totally nice in every other way. He was very intelligent (studying to be a doctor), friendly, and everyone he met liked him right away.

That's completely insane. I wonder what was going on in this guy's head when he came up with the idea to say that. My friend Britton got caught similarly when she told her teacher that her mother died in order to get an extension on a project. Well Britton forgot about what she did and tried the excuse again and got caught! Talk about not covering her bases. Never mind the sickness of using that excuse. That's the thing, though, with liars...if you lie so much you can forget what the hell you tell people.
