My toddler is almost 3 and I want to start potty training, but not sure what is the best way. My sister-in-law had her son run around the house with no diaper or pull up on. Not sure if I can do this with a newborn in the house. Any suggestions?

We're pretty much in the same position. We picked up the "no-tear potty training" book but haven't read it yet. And it's beyond time for our eldest. We need to start doing this.

Be like my dad. Show them how to use the toilet and if they pee their pants after that, rub their nose in it. Like the dog. Emotional issues? No, certainly not me.

Girl or boy?

If girl, sit her on the potty every hour on the hour and let her try and go. No underwear... she'll realize she hates being wet, pull ups are off the skin so she doesn't feel it.

We basically took my daughter to the bathroom once an hour at first and sat her down on the toilet. Then gradually had her go longer and longer between potty breaks. Also, don't bother buying one of those little kid potties that play music. They're a waste of money. Just get one of those inserts that goes on top of the regular toilet seat and a stool so your kid can get up there.

Put cheerios in the toilet and make it a game. Of course if you have a girl you might not want to try this suggestion. Good luck.

No punishments of course...but try an Incentive Chart.
A chart on the wall that you and he can look at together..whereby you tell him
for every day he uses the toilet (or whatever parameter you see fit) her gets a sticker for that day...when he gets x number of stickers he gets a small prize.

Children often forget to use the toilet so positive reinformcent (reward) has been shown to work.

i take my 3yr old with me to use the potty every time.
sometimes he asks to go, other times he forgets. he usually asks to go as a stall tatic, which is always fun (and convienent).

we've asked our ped (who's got 9 grandkids of his own) and he said they'll tell you when they are ready (when they are tired of being wet/dirty).

they lead, you follow.
