I know it's insulting, but they can't get rid of Philly and Pittsburgh.

Pennsylvania translates to Penn's Woods, named for William Penn. He laid out Philly in a grid, which impacted every other city in the US.

Yeah it's heartbreaking that they're so unenjoyable, cus he's the only guy repping around here. Although aparently there is a large influx of film makers interested in working in the delaware valley. They shot in a dirty cafe about 5 minutes from my house, and most people working in retail around king of prussia/philly/west chester have thier 'i waited on m night' story.

That's because he was raised in Penn Valley, not too far from Philly. Currently lives in Wayne and has production offices in Conshohocken.

PA also gives taxs breaks to filmmakers. You'll hear of more and more films being shot there.

Other than Gettysburg, I really don't go to PA all that much...New Hope is a very nice (although very yuppie/hipsterish) town...maybe its because the two sports teams/organ-i-zations i despise more than any other (as Derrick Williams so eloquently put it "the University of Penn State" and the Pittsburgh Penguins) reside there

Grew up there myself (mainly in Camp Hill). Inner-city Harrisburg can be scary in some areas, but there are nice areas as well. The riverfront is/was (haven't been there in years) pretty peaceful.

And yes, there is quite a bit of hickishness around... especially in Perry County.

So was Charlie Householder. Jim Thorpe wasn't, but the town of Mauch Chunk renamed themselves Jim Thorpe. Why? I do not know.
Thorpe's widow made a deal with the town that she would intern Jim's body there if they gave her some $$, renamed the town and built a monument that would hold his remains, since he "loved the area"..they did all that and no remains...she dissappeared with the cash.
My Great Grandfather coached Jim in baseball and Football..at Dickinson..

The town of Centralia is currently on fire underground.
Been on fire for over 30 years.. really creepy to drive through..a ghost town (we did it in the 80's before they closed the city to traffic because cars would just drop down into the fire.
Hershey smells like chocolate (Yum!) and it's where Wilt scored 100 points in a game.
They have a public pool housed inside a giant hersey's Kiss shaped dome that opens up when the weather gets warm.

They filmed portions of two movies in Johnstown..Slapshot and Flashdance.
Grandfather met/ate dinner with Paul Newman during Slapshot.
Flashdance showed the world's steepest Incline Plane (giant elevator) which is also the oldest in the USA.
There are still churches out there where they kiss snakes and drink poison.

Scranton (where I grew up) was the last stop for Vaudvillians before Broadway..If they were well recieved in Scranton..they were guaranteed a spot in Broadway.

Cable Tv was invented in Wilkes Barre when a farmer ran a cable up his windmill to get better reception for a hockey game.

Jason Miller, the young priest from the Exorcist, was from Scranton. His oscar winning screenplay "That Championship Season" was based on the players from Scranton Central Basketball team..most of the events in the movie were true, including the Elephant!

Mary Jo Kopeckne was from Scranton

Scranton is the only city in the USA that has 3 current Senators born in it:
Casey, Clinton, and Specter.

There is a giant ship on a mountain outside Johnstown

The "Ghost Walk" of Gettysburg is great

There are 14 people who fell into the Nicholson Bridge during construction and are interred inside it.

Old Forge Pa. calls itself the Pizza Capitol of the US..they have a Festival every August...Sicilian Pizza is called Old Forge pizza in these parts...
Dickson City has an annual festival on the weekend closest to St Ubaldo's day..which includes the running of the saints...a race of teams carrying shrines of St Patrick, St George, and St Ubaldo through the streets. Good food and great to watch!

I was in one of these. If you lean too hard against the wall, it feels like it'll fall down into the next suite... fake stars above the bed. Sweetness!

PA is where I moved when I was looking for a house and NJ was too expensive. After 32 years of NJ I packed up and moved just over the Delaware - as soon as you cross that line it's a little different from Jersey, then as you move west it gets real different. I like it a lot better. Excellent campgrounds and lots less traffic and congestion... Starbucks tends to be high society to these people though.

I think the Jim Thorpe thing was an attempt to generate some tourism. He was an olympic athelete from there? Something like that.

Also... forgot to mention. PA has what I like to call "functional ghost-towns" althought there are real ones there too. One of which may have been named after our esteemed host http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/pa/bennington.html

But a functional ghost -town is one where the surrounding steel/coal or other industry has essentially dried up with some stragglers still hanging on. Check out Mahanoy City, PA sometime if you're passing that way - it's like taking an exit off the PA turnpike into a Stephen King novel. Very creepy place.

There is also an abandoned Turnpike tunnel near there, we took a trip and walked through it. Pretty creepy.

There is a branch of the University of Pittsburg in Johnstown--the UPJ. :)

Did you see the "Iron Dog"? Wanna know how lame Johnsown is? They have a video store called "All The Right Movies".

You must have been in culture shock. J-Town is a place all its own.

Ahhh shite, I missed the, "Iron Dog," AND that video store... Oh yeah I woulda cackled if I saw that :0)

I did see a little restaurant called, "Coney Island Hot Dogs," however. Coney Island?! Heh...not that it has anything to do with anything here...

YEah, I was pissed that I forgot my camera on that trip cause some of those big old houses had a real haunted-house look to em... SpooOooOooky!!

I made $20 in that Coney Island. The food in there is typical fried garbage, but oh so good at 2am. I went there after a wedding and in all my dress clothes, began to suck the food off my plate like a pig. I then downed 3 other people's plates of food while people threw money at me. Not a drop of runny egg yoke on my clothes. All the while, the girl I was dating was passed out in my car. I have no idea why I feel such pride in that story.

It's located near the town of Wellsboro, where they still have gas streetlamps.

And my company is currently building a "Sands" Casino at the sight of Bethlehem Steel.

We had to go to Johnstown, PA a few weeks ago for the ole man's job.... He had to bring frieght for this trade show at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena....

Soooo if you go to Johnstown PA, you can check out the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.... where Slapshot was filmed.... and also in Johnstown you can think to yourself, "Hey, All the Right Moves was filmed here too!"

You can also think about the Johnstown flood....and possibly get songs about it stuck in your head....and you can see lotsa old churches.....

Hey, I also saw there that they still have a drive-in theater... open on the weekends... I think this is everything I know about Johnstown PA....

I am pro-Pennsylvania in general :0)You forgot Flashdance was filmed in Johnstown at Bethlehem Steel and they called it Pittsburgh
The inclined plane was in it as well.
My family's Funeral home survived both floods..and was taken by imminent domain to build a parking structure for the hospital.

My friend was the dresser for that movie early 90's I guess. I fed him a few lines that made it to the screen. "Are you DIVERGENT?" was mine. My buddy said the cold in the warehouses was nightmarish and devestating...tough winter.I guess the set was miserable most of the time. I think if 12 Monkeys wasn't made then Fight Club may not have been done. Fight Club made muchmore impact on film and culture. Some of Fight Club setting was around Delaware,Jersey,Philly area though I don't know where the shooting was actually done.Delaware is considered part of Philly in mass media, and we get more from Philly than Baltimore,so Delaware Northern quarter or 3rd is more NORTHERN,and the slower lower area(downstate) is considered SOUTHERN.It's somewhat like Jersey in that respect where the agriculture is considered down south,as Dave was pointing out. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/jlehane3/Ross1P128456784EFF0200P2216L2M1b-23.jpg Nasa uses Bob Cummings images to cover up Mars pics and thinks no-one will know.I designed the Mars rovers1987 and have a somewhat visual memory of the 99th percentile.LOVE THAT BOB is dead and not on Mars. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/jlehane3/love_that_bob_sm.jpg

I think it's some kind of mania for hunters in PA(and I'm sure other states). The think that freaks me out is deer ticks spreading Lyme disease, and I want NO PART of that.I believe the hunters are risking their lives to provide a valuable public service to rid us of Zombie deer with zombie deer ticks. Well we're living here in Allentown
And they're closing all the factories down
Out in Bethlehem they're killing time
Filling out forms
Standing in line
Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore
Met our mothers in the USO
Asked them to dance
Danced with them slow
And we're living here in Allentown

But the restlessness was handed down
And it's getting very hard to stay

Well we're waiting here in Allentown
For the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard
If we behaved
So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coke
And chromium steel
And we're waiting here in Allentown

But they've taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled away

Every child had a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got
But something happened on the way to that place
They threw an American flag in our face

Well I'm living here in Allentown
And it's hard to keep a good man down
But I won't be getting up today

And it's getting very hard to stay
And we're living here in Allentown
