View Full Version : A way for Earl to make up for bad prizes

Earl restocks the prize closet, but as an incentive for him to choose quality prizes any winner can refuse the prize, in which case earl has to cut a check for its retail value and mail that out. So you get a prize or 20 bucks and an Earl Douglas autograph.

Has there been a real problem with bad prize closet prizes?
It was discussed briefly on the show today stemming from a thread on wackbag. A survey of stuff currently in the prize closet confirmed the awfulness. Earl promptly blamed Pitzy, but his lie was blown up in about 5 seconds.

Let's put it this way. I was rewarded for my wit with a DVD titled, "Carson Country". Featuring classic clips from the tonight show starring Johnny Carson and an all star country line up. Great music, big laughs.
If Earl was near me when I excitedly opened the box I would have tried to behead him with the dvd case. There was a "Songs of the Ron and Fez Show" CD in there too, but still.

Thank you for proving my point. It's all about you.
There was a quite lengthy discussion on the show today about the poor quality of the prize closet. Many listeners that had previously won things called in to verify the shoddiness of their prizes.
Ron admonished both Earl and Fez for not keeping the closet up to snuff.
I guess as long as you get your free iPod and some shitty DVDs your happy, though.
Must be nice to be convinced you're the only one on the planet that matters.

Sue me. I missed most of today's show and won't get a chance to hear it until tomorrow. It was really a flippant comment, but once again I'm the devil. Also, I'd like to point out that I never got an iPod, but I did get this, Mr. barroom singalong...

In all seriousness, were people really calling to complain about the prizes? After all, they are completely free. They even get overnighted to your home most of the time. You don't even have to enter a contest or even call in specifically to win most of the time. They just get awarded by Ron to callers most of the time. If you get something you don't like, pitch it or put it up on ebay. Jeez, talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth.

This, this, this. 1000% this.
Getting free prizes that are "good" is extremely hard sometimes. And even then, you're not going to get a prize that everyone likes.
As Mikey said, there's no contesting on the Ron and Fez show. Getting something is Ron's way of saying "hey, I like you, here's something."
The solution to the crappy prize problem is simple. Everyone who gets a cowbell gets a t-shirt. If there's a promotional prize like "Carson Country" or something, fine, but NOBODY ever complains about getting a T-shirt.
Of course, XM coughing up the cash for T-shirts is another story entirely, but Ron cowbells, what, maybe three times a show? As an imprinted t-shirt usually runs three bucks a pop, I think XM can afford 10 bucks a show.
Just my 2 cents.

OK. I've been thinking. Here goes:
I never know what's in a prize pack. Is it just the prize itself, or are there other goodies?
If I was in charge of the prize closet, this is what I would send:
1) Autographed headshot of R&F. Have these pre-signed by R&F at the beginning of the week or at their staff meeting. Doesn't have to be a lot, maybe 15-30 shots. That would be enough to last for two weeks.
Autographs of R&F may not mean a lot to the people who live around here, but it would probably mean more to people in Canada, the west coast, etc.
2) R&F T-Shirt. Buy large quantities in size medium and size XL.
3) Promotional prize. Look for release dates of CD's, box sets, DVDs. Work the phones. Make contacts. Make relationships.
4) Reduce shipping costs by sending ground vs. overnight to off-set the cost of the T-shirts.

very good idea...if i ever got into the closet i'd rather have a shirt or picture (which would be the same price or cheaper than what they have now i believe)

The people were complaining about some awful fucking DVDs. Like someone got Season 2 of the Gilmore Girls. Ron was pissed because it had nothing to do with the Ron and Fez show at all.
Then when they looked at the stuff they had for the prize closet, the stuff there was awful. And there was even something already opened.
Also, Earl of course tried blaming Pitzy for it.
Ron's big thing was if they're going to send shitty stuff out, at least send a LOT of shitty stuff to the listeners. Not just a single DVD.

The T-shirts and the cost of the headshots would probably cost XM more out of pocket than the actual "prize closet" prizes. They are usually "promotional items" - The radio station gets a certain amount of "free" prizes to give away, (CDs, DVDs, etc) and in turn, the radio station gives them plugs on the air.
Sometimes, the prizes are really cool, and sometimes, they are crap, but if your promotions closet is empty, you'll stock it up with anything.

And no offense to Ron, but if the prize closet is "strained", why send a lot of stuff? Then the closet will REALLY get depleted.

The only guy who matters is actually a snit that works at Starbucks. I just had to keep myself from lunging over the counter and biting his throat.

Because they don't really need the prize closet. If it gets depleted, they just wouldn't give stuff out. It's not as if people would stop listening to the show if they stopped giving out stuff in the prize closet.

True. I just think a T-shirt and an autographed picture would go a longer way than a DVD that you may or may not care about.

As an aside, the show sent the following items from the prize closet to my kids:

Kind of odd stuff for an XL satellite radio channel, which is probably why my kids got it. They enjoyed the stuff though.

I got close to that, best prize I could have ever hoped for. I recieved the June issue of cigar magazine with the Ronnie B article for a prize and one of the pictures in the article was signed "I took this - Earl". He was awful proud of the photo it seemed. He's a published photographer.

A lot of times, the promotional companies, especially ones you develop relationships with, will send EVERYTHING to you. It's not so much that they are telling the major companies that they are on an XL Channel, it's just XM in general.
I remember once we got Strawberry Shortcake videos to give away. We kept that one "online only".
